Re: POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

why are the ukraines provoking the russians? do they have a death wish?!?!?

Re: POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

Trump ran against "normal", the business as usual Washington. He won. Don't be surprised when he's not ... normal. Like I said in a previous post, he's behaving like a new CEO hired to come in and fix a distressed company, not a normal DC politician.

It's hard to do, but step back and look at it objectively and you'll see it.
(Whether you like CEOs or that approach is surely a whole thread of its own.)

The criticism isn't because he's different it's because he's unhinged. If you were objective you'd know that.

...please don't throw me in with those North Dakota guys."

Reduuuundant.

Could be interesting to see Trump's illicit agenda towards Russia next to Haley's illicit agenda towards Russia. The anti Russian message at the security council couldn't have been written by Trump.

Re: POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

Somehow the two Senators who oppose DeVos must have voted to cut off debate on DeVos. Which makes no sense.

WASHINGTON — Betsy DeVos cleared a major hurdle in the Senate to become the next education secretary despite vigorous opposition from Democrats.

Senators voted 52-48 to cut off debate at dawn Friday, setting the stage for a final confirmation vote next week on President Donald Trump's nominee.

She'll be confirmed. I hope there is a quick and systemic destruction of public education soon after.

But wait a minute. My fellow lefties SWORE out here to me on these very pages that Dodd-Frank did nothing and there was no difference between Hillary and Trump on Wall St. regulation? Therefore, I expect to hear some cheers out of these same people, and you know who you are, now that Trump is rolling it back, no?

think of all the newfound free time rover will have with compliance training cancelled now :p

Not sure what you are referring to, but the Beeb ran a story this morning that the Russians are even more obviously moving their people into Donetsk and the surrounding area and western geopolitical types think it's to test how far they can go with the new US regime.

That would seem to suggest that if the Ukrainians are behaving differently from before it's in reaction to the Russians behaving differently thinking they have a free hand now that a friendly guy is in the White House.

What are you trying to accomplish with these needlings?

Time to concentrate on the real enemy, big guy.

Nah, it makes sense. They oppose her but they don't oppose the right of their colleagues to bring her to a vote. I'll bet it's quite common that Members forgo their option to use process blocks within their own caucus. That would be an excellent way to p-ss off your leadership and wind up on an awful committee.

We'll see when the vote comes down. My guess is they let it through cause they've got the votes.

Re: POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

They both got her through committee too. It's funny to see some of the praise they are getting.

I assume their disapproval was a calculation regarding their "brand." If they come out of this stronger yet the party still gets its nominee, that's the game at its best.

This is exactly the sort of thing the GOP has not been able to get out of their own way on over the last few years, so the party faithful should take heart. It's a basic play, but that hasn't stopped them from shooting themselves in the balls for years on even simple stuff like this. Maybe the leadership is starting to reassert some control now that they have more goodies to dangle with the new regime.

Because lefties need to learn a hard lesson and look in the mirror. Otherwise we're doomed to repeat the same mistakes with disastrous consequences. Like 2000. This needs to be reinforced constantly. Complacently and a quest for purity amongst liberals will keep knuckledraggers in power for eons. Saying "my bad" but lets move on doesn't cut it. The time to defeat the real enemy was 3 months ago but we kept getting kneecapped by our alleged allies, while every Mittens voter turned around and supported Trump even though they were supposed to be horrified by him.

So, let me give you a hypothetical. 2020 rolls around and we have two choices in the primaries. Elizabeth Warren and Andrew Cuomo. Not a far fetched scenario. Warren is my favorite pol and I hope she gets the nomination. However, say she doesn't and Cuomo wins out. I will enthusiastically support his candidacy, not because I'm crazy about the guy, but because he's light years better than the alternative, Trump 2.0. My extreme worry Kep, and it starts with you, is that the temptation for you to spend all primary blasting the guy, then sticking a "Warren...okay Cuomo I guess" bumper sticker on your car while claiming there's be no difference between him and Trump on key issues would be too great to resist. This is something the left needs to reconcile with itself BEFORE election day, not afterwards like they're doing now.

Hey, like I'm always telling my boss. The internet doesn't surf itself. :D

I have more sympathy with your argument than you probably realize.

However, look at it from the other side for a moment. Do you really think telling liberals "you suck and it's all your fault!" twenty times a day is going to build the party unity you recognize we need? Particularly when from the liberal perspective it isn't our fault at all and the lesson to be learned from the election is listen to your base and nominate a liberal when liberalism matches the country's anger with the plutes?

If you don't let it go and start moving back towards a union between moderates and liberals we will spend all our time beating on each other and not opposing an actual fascist coup. If we don't start winning elections immediately the GOP will distort our elections to create self-perpetuating rule. THAT is the motivation that both sides can unite on. You and I can fight until the end of time on why we lost the election (hint: our candidate was literally less appealing than a cut-rate Mussolini with a clown car of negatives) and be no closer to power. Or we can unite against the real threat and leave our differences for when we have the luxury to thrash them out.

If those are the two options Trump wins a second term in a landslide. The Safe act won't play in most of the country and Warren is incredibly unlikable.
