POTUS 45.15 - Now With More Yacht Banging Stories!

Agree with a lot of this. I don't think a lot of people realize that a degree from a school like UMass doesn't do a lot of good by itself. I'd add that a lot of people who are 18 don't even know what they want to do. A lot of kids would be better served to work a for some time then think about going to college. Everyone is different and kids should have different paths to success.

GET OF MY LAWN!!!!

Regarding "free" college, I think you can set it up so that everybody with the grades to be admitted gets one free shot at state school. You can charge them but waive the fee if you'd like until they complete their degree in 5 years lets say, barring special circumstances like a military deployment, hospitalization, etc. That would give directionless students some time to find themselves or whatever they call it now, but also there is the specter of having to pay up if you don't make the effort to get a diploma.

I also agree that too many jobs require a degree when it isn't needed but there's zero hope of legislating that away. I also agree at least in Mass that there are way too many political hacks drawing fat salaries out of line with the work they're doing. If each state is on the hook somewhat for the free tuition part of the equation, perhaps they'll also look at reducing some unneeded expenses as well.

Tillerson turns down Congressionally-allocated funding to counteract Russian disinformation campaigns in US because that would offend... Russia.

I really don't get it. What's the downside to making Russia angry at the US? what are they gonna do, nuke us? Eff them. We don't mind making N Korea mad at the US.

Now, the downside of an angry Russia to Tillerson's or Trumpy's wallet, I completely understand.

Yeah, the downside of angry Russia to Tillerson is lower Exxon shareprice, and the danger to Trump is calling in his loans and/or leaking the pee tape.

The City College of New York back in the day had free admission to every boy with an 85 average or above and a 90+ for girls (The #s may be off a bit, but Dad (Morris High '36) told me there was a different standard for boys and girls).

That was during CCNY's legendary days. It was later destroyed though for good intentions.

Re: POTUS 45.15 - Now With More Yacht Banging Stories!

I think free admission ended in the 50s.

According to Wikipedia it ended after they implemented open admissions after a campus takeover in the late 60s (very similar to the Cornell takeover that put the wind up Alan Bloom. Or Harold Bloom, I mix them up). Anywho, with open admissions academic standards went into the toilet and the university went broke, so they started charging admissions. When I was in college, CCNY was regarded as a joke, and it was impossible to believe fifty years earlier it was one of the most exciting and challenging liberal arts universities in the world.

Isn't Cuomo trying to do free tuition in New York for state colleges?

Gonna need admissions rqmts if he does that.

You must be an undergraduate enrolled at a SUNY or CUNY school. There's also an income cap, which will be phased in over the first three years.

Starting this fall, families who earn no more than $100,000 a year are eligible. The income cap will lift to $110,000 next year and will reach $125,000 in 2019. It's based on the adjusted gross income reported on the family's most recent tax return.

If your family earns more than that, you don't get the scholarship. There is no sliding scale and the threshold does not take into consideration how many children are in the family.

Good start. It should be based on wealth, not income, to catch the rich scofflaws.

Weirdly, the schools doing it right are HYP and Stanford. Of course, they can afford to with their $20B+ endowments.

I think free education is the right direction to go but (obviously) it won't solve all of the issues in terms of economic inequality. So much of doing well in school when you're younger is reliant on the fact that your parents are pushing you to do well since they understand the importance of it. Obviously as a kid you can't possibly have a full grasp on that and so there's still some issues challenges that'd need to be addressed.

That's true, but we should at least be pushing it in the right direction. As it is our system magnifies differences and just recycles the same families to the best schools generation after generation, not because of raw intelligence but because Eric gets a personal tutor and enrolls in a $10k SAT prep course.

Re: POTUS 45.15 - Now With More Yacht Banging Stories!

Agreed and obviously there's some correlation between countries that have free education and less inequality.

Re: POTUS 45.15 - Now With More Yacht Banging Stories!

I'm all for admission requirements. I think HOPE scholarships are designed that way maybe??? I also think TX and GA had a similar policy in that you were guaranteed admission if you had a B average in high school to state schools. As has been said its on the right track and I'm curious how NY fares with this. Could be a model for other parts of the country.

Probably noise, but the Q poll has Trump just cratering.

He is now underwater even with white men.

And how are you going to pay for this "free" education? Guess what, it's not free. And if you think you're just going to steal from "the rich", you have another thing coming. Because with all your socialist ideas, you've basically run out of their money.
