Re: POTUS 45.11: Attack! Repeat. Atrack!!!

This is such a beautiful example of why there can't be an honest conversation....

Explain?

I can't 100% say some are illegals. Some from that neighborhood work with some friends of mine, and they kinda have the whole mail-order bride thing/arranged marriage thing going on.

Edit: Where there's smoke....that sorta thing.

And I'd say the major mover of all that is when people had the black family, or the gay couple, move into their neighborhood and start going to their schools, and their wives didn't get raped, and their children didn't get molested, and the crime rate didn't go up, and their property values didn't go down. Things like that.

It certainly wasn't because of political discourse on the subject of tolerance. You aren't gonna change a bigot's mind by talking to them, or ameliorating their feelings. Only exposure to the things they hate, and them discovering for themselves how their hatred has been misinformed, will do that. If they want to stay secluded in their little cone of bigotry, I ain't gonna go seeking them out and try to drag them out into the light.
Yet what's funny is in all these political threads that is precisely what you, and everyone else, are trying to do. Most have resorted to political discourse as opposed to using the shun feature. :)

I don't care if you're Asian, Mexican, Russian, German, etc. If you are an illegal immigrant, you should not be here.

Meh. Every immigrant to the US before about 1920 was illegal, or anyway alegal. It's not even in the top 100 things I worry about.

I am way less concerned about the threats posed by illegal immigrants than about the threats posed by the frothing jackwagons who are so hot to deport them. Given the choice, I'd gladly keep the former and get rid of the latter.

Just because it happened before does not make it correct now. ;)

That was probably the least relevant part of my post to respond to. It would seem illegal immigration is an important issue to you, and your response to my attempt to look at actual policies is to pick out the one nit with what I said and point out that there are illegals here. We all agree there are illegals here, that isn't the issue. If you want to make an impact on illegal immigration (the act, not the people that have already done it), how would you go about it? You want us to listen to you, but you have to actually say something.

True, but I'd like to have a rule where anybody can come over but if you haven't made it by the fourth generation we deport you back home. More Mexicans, fewer Scots-Irish, please.

Start actually deporting the illegals. Get rid of the "safe" cities/refugee cities that are part of the debate. Crack down on employers that hire illegals. Be pro-active, not reactive. I know the US is ramping up under the current administration, and Obama did an okay job with it (credit to him). Let's keep it up. Be diligent.

And I agree with keeping those dam Scots out. ;)

Maybe we could deport them to Minnesota and force them to work in those rosemaling factories. That's a win-win.

Re: POTUS 45.11: Attack! Repeat. Atrack!!!

Some folks might have forgotten that the Rust Belt would-be coal miners that gave Trump the margin of victory were, on average, lifelong democrats who felt they didn't have an audience in Washington for their gripes and so they rebelled in 2016. They're not going to be that hard to win back. Repaying bigotry with bigotry isn't going to do it. (On this site alone, which is more civilized than most, I've heard it proclaimed that poor whites should be shot, nuked, lynched, sent to the moon, deported, sterilized, and worse; would that be okay to say about blacks? Be honest) There is still something to be said about acting in a civilized way to win people to your point of view.
Having said that, we can all concede that the Republican Party is thoroughly corrupted and needs to be removed from power. A one-party state is also high on the list of steps to authoritarian dictatorships (On Tyranny, Timothy Snyder) So I suggest doing away with the hated (R) label altogether and re-forming the (D)s into conservatives and liberals who are honest and well-intentioned Americans favoring Democracy. That way rufus etc. can have a victory parade and we can recenter the debate on more sane grounds. I'll leave it to you what to name the new major parties. But one should be Whigs because it sounds cool.

Had to look it up. Nice local color.

The Norwegians can stay. The women are super hot and the men are no threat to anybody.

No see we actually have jobs and a nice standard of living here so we dont need them. Lets send them to WI and North Dakota...that is a true punishment ;) (vast wastelands of nothing, dried up oil fields, people who molest deer and horses, no education, no jobs...etc)

Brent, you and I agree on some things and disagree on others, but I'm on the opposite side of the fence with you on this issue.

Here is my view on immigration, and the reaction to it.

Immigration is an instinct possessed by every living thing. The instinct to search for better shelter, better economic opportunities (food), better mating opportunities, and a safe place to live are why salmon swim upstream, geese fly south in the winter and zebras head to the watering hole. It's why few people stayed in North Dakota as everyone headed west, while everyone else went to California.

The instinct of living things who are already there to protect what they view as theirs is also basic. I disagree that at it's core it is based on race or religion or other forms of illegal bigotry. I think we saw evidence of that in the 1930's as white Americans from the midwest tried to emigrate to the West for all the same reasons Mexicans now had north, and were faced with the same form of "bigotry," even though these Okies had been their fellow travelers out West but just got tired of the ride.

We accept as natural the desire of humans to move from Mississippi to California, across artificially created borders, in search of a better way of life. Why is it unnatural to accept a similar move across the artificial border with Mexico?

My immigration policy would be this.

1. If you want to come here, welcome. You just have to abide by our rules. You need to pay your taxes. You need to follow our laws.

2. If you want a say in creating the rules, that's another matter. You actually have to go through the steps of becoming a citizen, then you can vote, sit on juries, etc... Otherwise, you're going to have to live within the rules we establish.

I personally disagree with the idea of trying to criminalize or even legislate against these basic human instincts. I have this opinion because I actually think that instinct is good and positive. We are better off as a globe if people in general have a better standard of living.

Actually, I think they will be near impossible to win back. The only reason they were Democrats was the Unions they belonged to.

And all the unions can do is stand up for them vs. the management of the companies.

They can't stand up for them vs. natural gas.

So there's no real need for the unions anymore.

Whoever brings them jobs first will win this generation back, permanently. Then how that works out will see if changes.

Given that money should be one of the most important things around- which would be more cost effective- straight up deport them, or make them "legal" so that we can collect taxes on them? Heck, you could even pass a law to take SS and Medicare from them even though they are not eligible.

Not only would it be a heck of a lot easier, it would tax the poor even more- which should make R's even more happy.

For sure, look into the jobs that are actually being "stolen"- but I honestly doubt those numbers are as high as people want to make them out to be.

Good idea. Let's now give those in charge of executing this concept the tools they need to do it. Encourage pro-activity, and do not place reactivity on top of it. Let's cut the "racism" accusations at every turn, and stop prosecuting our agents for doing their job.

Here's one other idea: Take a look at why the citizen supporters of the illegals are supporting them in the first place, because although some may have treasonous bases which are completely unacceptable (i.e. the whole "migrant" thing), most can't get what they need from Americans themselves, so they turn abroad. Let them redress their grievances, and then figure out what can be done within the bounds of the country and states to assist them.

Hey, this guy robbed a bank to feed his family. Sure he broke the law but just tax his "take" and call it good. Cool? Yes that is an odd comparison, but in both cases, laws were broken. Pay the piper if you break the law.

Crap, Flaggy is agreeing with me.......not sure I like that.
