POTUS 45.08: Suckers

Re: POTUS 45.08: Suckers

I really think my parents did a hell of a job raising two kids, but if there is just one thing I wish they did, I wish they pushed us to eat better. I'm doing it now, but it took 28+ years to get me to eat a salad regularly.

They kept us extremely active with sports so we could get away with that while we were younger. But it starts to catch up on you when you get older.

My parents kept me in Little League baseball and bowling. But they flopped on the eating healthy part; ice cream and pop were on the grocery list every week. It wasn't until I came home from college, got a job, and started the cooking myself that we started eating fresh. And oh... they didn't want to give up their Kraft Mac n Cheese.

And even if you exercise enough to keep the weight off, eating junk still leads to heart disease, diabetes, etc.

I'm a marathon runner, and one lie I have been told is "you can eat whatever you want." That is true... but they're missing the other part of the statement. I do allow myself a little fun, yes, but for the most part, it's fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and quality protein. Usually, my doctor has rave reviews for me, and I'd like to keep those going, thank you...

Most people get more sugar by breakfast (40g/day) than they should all day. One of the trade offs as processed foods removed fat was an increase in salt and particularly sugar.

Unless it's corn on the cob, I don't salt anything anymore. Haven't for years. Honestly, most if not all food doesn't need salt.

Re: POTUS 45.08: Suckers

Food needs to be seasoned. And by seasoned I mean salt. Try baking bread without salt. It's nasty.

Re: POTUS 45.08: Suckers

I tend to add a little high quality pink Himalayan or Hawaiian sea salt. Controlling how much is used is key.

I think I found out our difference. Food is made with salt. Cool. It's the added salt we add after being served.....THAT salt is unnecessary.

Re: POTUS 45.08: Suckers

Most of the processed food crap people eat is already loaded with salt.

Well yeah. :P. I was thinking more like a home cooked meal from scratch. If I'm making a brat, I won't salt it. But a baked potato? Yeah, pass the salt.

I haven't gotten into any of the mineral or smoked salts. I've thought about it, but haven't splurged yet.

Anything in particular that it goes well with?

Everything? Seasoning steak or pork, home made soups or sauces...I don't have any white table salt in the house anymore

Re: POTUS 45.08: Suckers

Side note: The only differences between one type of salt and another are:

A) Additives (typically iodine, or in the case of most expensive salts, a lack of other crap))
B) Grain size

Anyone who says that one salt tastes different from another is lying.

And the only two I have in my home are Kosher (for cooking) and table (for baking). People who claim Himalayan salt is "chemical-free" is full of themselves, when... SALT IS A CHEMICAL!

They're not lying, merely fooling themselves. Unless they're selling these artisan salts themselves, they believe it to be true, and thus not lying. Let's not toss out language bombs.

Re: POTUS 45.08: Suckers

Salts do taste different. You can taste the difference between table salt (which I also don't buy anymore, only kosher) and kosher salt. When you add in various minerals and smokes, it's quite apparent.
