Potter out at Ohio State

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

This article makes her look like a rather dim bulb.

This is probably why Mankato & UMD required someone with experience at the D1 level, note that she was not a finalist for either.

A pickup hockey game LOL, This is pretty small potatoes compared to football & hoops where the infraction is supplying a car, drugs, money, women, doing their homework and writing term papers...

It makes me wonder if there were a lot bigger issues that just have not been reported.

I heard she gave one of the recruits a bag of Skittles.

I posted about this earlier...players were complaining and they found a way to run her out! These infractions are not that bad compared to others we hear about. Kids complain, Witch hunt, they wait until the 11th hour to gas Potter, in order to keep a mass exodus of current players, Hire a replacement and announce her at a football game in order to give the impression the admin cares about Women's Hockey......just my two cents.

Coach Muzerall officially announced:

OMG even her little kid is wearing the Buckeye colors already

The caption in the Instagram photo is
She's happy to be here and we're happy to have her as our new head coach. Welcome to Ohio State Nadine Muzerall! #GoBucks

"She's happy to be here" seems like an odd choice for a caption for an introduction pic. Like you'd think they would go for something a little stronger...are they implying someone else wasn't happy to be there?

What were they complaining about as you talk as if you have the inside track ? I really doubt the players would have much input after only one year wit JP as Head Coach……results did not matter last year, get program back on track was all that could be expected and recruit the kinda players you want for the future ! One year freebie…...

Rising Seniors transferred out, Two players cut, did they have positive reviews of JP? Get program back on track? It was a winning program JP inherited....the systems they played weren't effective....Handrahan teams were competitive and record showed.....recruiting was in a solid place until JP came in. Even though I've heard she was able to land a few good ones.....the talent is there..

I think they are making reference to her big and beautiful smile :D

It came across as if you were calling out player's when it appears JP wasn't doing as well as hoped, women's version of Gretzky coaching ! in any event hope that Muzerall can bring stability to what should be a strong program.

It's not just Gretzky coaching it sends to be typical, in several sports, that the really good (great) players tend to be poor coaches.

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

I have not heard anywhere that JP was a poor coach unless you have insight that we do not have. The story was pretty clear that there were recurring compliance violations which lead to her dismissal. As for players transferring, it may or may not have anything to do with JP and more to do with personal reasons. Seems like Kepler and Ranahan went back home to close out their university careers. And based on a previous post, looks like 3-4 players have transferred in. Go figure. Muzerall seems to be a good choice. It will be interesting to see how the team responds.

I believe that’s because "the really good (great) players" probably never had to sit on the bench, never had to be in a supporting role, never needed much motivation, and probably didn’t get much criticism. Coaches who have experienced sports outside of being the star have a better understanding of the different players that make up a team. Good coaches have empathy and can motivate in various ways. In addition, there is so much more to coaching than just knowing how to play the game -- player development, classroom performance, logistics, administrative, and abiding by those pesky NCAA rules. Just my two cents.

My opinion is that the talent/skills that make one an elite athlete are different than the talent/skills that make one an elite coach. You will find cases where a great athlete is also a top coach, but that's just because they fall into the intersection of the Venn Diagram circles for 'Great Athlete' and 'Great Coach'. Most top coaches are not great athletes, and most great athletes are not great coaches.

Once administrators start hiring on coaching skills rather than past athletic achievements, they will find that they will actually have to hire fewer coaches.

My suspicion is that there isn't much evidence that great players make lousy coaches. Most human beings make lousy elite-level coaches, and the percentage of great players who fall into that category probably isn't much different from the population as a whole. The difference is that someone who was a great player in their sport often doesn't have to go through the weeding out process of coaching in smaller venues or as an assistant before being named the head coach of an elite team. So, they fail at a higher rate than do coaches with other backgrounds, not because elite players tend to make bad coaches, but because they were never given the opportunity to fail, or to learn all of the other skills that you mention, prior to being given the big job.
