Potter out at Ohio State

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

OSU is building a very good staff. Kozumi is a very good recruiter. Girls really like her and now with having scholarships to work with will make her job a lot easier.

Sorry, not as big a fan as several on the board. Was highly unimpressed with her recruiting success at Yale and have some insight that suggests questionable judgement. Setting aside the recruiting aspect, see little evidence that she is a good game coach. Being liked is nice, but only if it translates into recruiting success and wins - haven't seen that from her yet. Time will tell on this one.

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Time will tell, just hope Muzerall and her staff are around for awhile to give these players some stability. Have some great players, hopefully some freshman can help right away and need to recruit some depth.

Totally agree with you. She comes off as very arrogant to most players and it turns people off right away. This is not as good of a hire as people may think. Not a good start to the Muzzerall era.

Agree as well.

Ya, I'm not sure about this hiring decision either. Also, did they post for the associate coach job or can Muzzerall hire her staff without going through the regular standards and practices for hiring because it's so close to the season. I just don't understand how it works.

Maybe they used passed over candidates for the HC gig posting as the associate coach candidates.

this is what is great about the women's thread (NOT!)
lots of unfounded speculation, rumor, gossip ...

what I would like to know from OSU fans is what is up with "THE"
it's not Ohio State University
it's The Ohio State University

Why are we called "THE" Ohio State University"?

In 1986, a new University logo was introduced in the hopes of moving away from the "OSU" symbol, which had been used since 1977. The change from simply "OSU" was said to "reflect the national stature of the institution." University officials wanted the institution to be known as "The Ohio State University," again, since OSU could also mean Oregon State and Oklahoma State University.

However, the "The" was actually part of the state legislation when the university was renamed in 1878. The following excerpt is from the Board of Trustee minutes:

"...the educational institution heretofore known as the 'Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College,' shall be known and designated hereafter as 'The Ohio State University.'"

Those who wanted the name change thought the original name was too narrow in scope, and that it was inadequate for the institution that was the only beneficiary of the land grant act. President Edward Orton was insistent that a new name would separate the institution from other colleges in Ohio.

Legend also has it that "The" was used to show the other colleges which institution was supposed to be the leader in the state - both in size and in financial support from the legislature.

I thought she was very good. It's not easy to recruit at a place like Yale [academics, cost, scholarship issue, program history, etc.]...they have made strides in recent years and are building a solid foundation, and she had some positive role in that.

Keep in mind that they were limited to the pool of people who would take an assistant coach position two weeks before the season starts. I'd bet that the pool of applicants wasn't very deep.

That is what I was thinking too. I'd bet after this year Muzz re-evaluates her assistants and possibly upgrades. I know stability is important, but quality that leads to winning is more important. Not that I mind tOSU sucks, I have no love lost for that school overall.

thanks, been following Big Ten athletics since the mid 60's, this is the first time I've ever heard anyone refer to it as "The ..."
but then Badgers always refer to their colors as red & white, so .....
come to think of it THE OSU always refer to it as red too ...

I think I remember hearing it from pro football players who went to Ohio State that played for the Vikings back in the 90s when they were introducing themselves at the beginning of games like on Monday Night Football. Players like Chris Carter, Korey Stringer, and Robert Smith would say their name... And then "The Ohio State University".

We did this a couple years ago (and maybe I'm focusing on the word "always" too much, but): while Badger fans will informally refer to red, as in "Let's Go, Red", etc., everyone knows and understands the the school's colors are Cardinal and White. There are two newspapers readily available on campus (though somewhat less so, as newspapers transition to online-only publishing): the newer one is the Badger Herald, published since the 1960s; the older, published for well over a hundred years, is the Daily Cardinal. Everyone knows that is is "Cardinal and White"

(I'll let the OSU folks speak for themselves, but I have known for...ever that they are the Scarlet and Grey.)

Edit/addition: both Nebraska and Indiana fans and cheerleaders will cheer "Go Big Red", etc. Nebraska is "Scarlet and Cream", Indiana "Crimson and Cream".
