Potsdam Bears 2010-11

Re: Potsdam Bears 2010-11

I have heard from reliable sources that Maxcy will be repaired by today and will be all set to go for tomorrow. Hopefully we won't lose the ice with the recent heatwave. ;)

Good contest this afternoon at Cheel. Geneseo got an early one on a pretty passing play but Potsdam responded in the 3rd with two goals but just couldn't finish to get the tying goal. Definitely one of the most unusual games I have ever seen, starting at one location and finishing at another.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2010-11

Looks like they couldn't get the LiveStats moved to Cheel :(

Though the planning for this, probably helped in getting Clarkson quickly on board :)

Excerpt:
There is a long history of cooperation among the 4 Potsdam-Canton schools. We've used SLU's Appleton Arena when our barn was undergoing renovations, and SLU used Walker when their zam went through the end boards. For years Canton played their home games @ SLU. In other sports, when the weather is bad, we switch fields all the time to the fake grass fields. So, nothing unusual.

I think the ice rents for around $200/hr. :)

Re: Potsdam Bears 2010-11

Must have been hard to cool down the arena last night ..... with -36 degrees WITHOUT the windchill I doubt it took too long :)
No one gave me a warm reception to the idea of finishing the Geneseo game at a local outdoor rink yesterday. We are getting wimpy in this country.

I just remembered that -40 F = -40 C. When I lived there, I got the biggest battery that would fit in my car and with a 250 cu in straight 6, the car would turn over even when it got that cold.

It took a while to warm up, but a 2 speed automatic and the 250 straight 6 was a beast in Potsdam in winter.

Yeah, I remember you and I talking about that.

I also suggested that they should do what baseball does ... wipe the slate clean and start the game over. For some reason, Geneseo didn't care for that suggestion...

My first date with my wife, it was 29 below zero. We walked downtown to The Depot (long gone) from our dorm.

For some unknown reason, she didn't dump me right there and then. Nor the million other times she had an opportunity...

I have a straight 6 in my '98 jeep and she's a beast. 175K+ miles and still trucking.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2010-11

Wow, 8-1. It wasn't even as close as the score would indicate. By far Oswego is the most skilled team I have seen this season. They are very impressive to watch on the PP as well. Well with the Red Dragons shutting out Platty tonight 2-0, the game at Maxcy should be interesting to say the least.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2010-11

Bears lose 7-6 in OT to Cortland after blowing a 4-1 lead after the first period. I guess I could write here how dissappointed I am with the outcome of the game and find fault with the loss. However after much thought about today's events I have put things in perspective.
Today was the first annual Hockey Day in Potsdam. Three hockey games took place in Potsdam, two at Maxcy and one at Cheel. An individual could have purchased a $20 ticket which would have been good for all three games. For which all proceeds from this ticket will be donated to Marine Cpl Aaron Howell, a local native who lost both legs while fighting in Afgahanstan last year. SUNY Potsdam donated all ticket sales from both the high school and the Bears game played today at Maxcy. Donations were collected at all three games and a generous Clarkson Alumni promised to match all the donations. I am confident through this support we all were able to pay our respect for a local hero.
Did my Bears lose? Absolutely. In the big picture, today was not about my Bears losing, it was about a young man who volunteered to fight for our country and made a huge sacrifice. I know my loss is nothing compared to what this fine young man has lost. Just trying to put things in perspective for all of us dedicated hockey fans who complain when our team loses a game. That's all it is, a game.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2010-11

Well the Bears are really up against from here on out. Alot of things have to happen in order for them to make the playoffs. I just had so much belief that this was going to be a stellar season for the Bears. I don't know what went wrong.....(sigh).
I was just checking some stats, in the past 3 seasons our record is 23-40-8. Insert bad language here.

The past three years also saw: Aaron Saul leave and Chris Bernard take over as well as two different Assistant Coaches; it takes time to stabilize a program and establish strong recruiting. Potsdam has, I believe the administrative support as well as that of the Athletic department, they will return to, at least the upper middle of the pack.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2010-11

is this the most underachieving program in the ncaa?

the whole roster is practically from Canada (maybe start getting some NY state players)
they have an on campus rink
admissions standards practically equivalent to college in pj's dot com
they play in a competitive conference
...is something going on there in addition to coaching turnover that is causing their grief?
is it coaching? lack of support from the administration?

Re: Potsdam Bears 2010-11

I think one of the biggest problems that they have is that many of the players have a sense of entitlement. What they are entitled to I'm not sure. They are currently a sub .500 team in the SUNYAC. Not to take anything away from the SUNYAC; it is a good league. I hope Coach Bernard gets 30 new players and gets rid of some of these whiney kids who have had everything given to them. maybe some blue collar kids from the states would be a good thing.

Re: Potsdam Bears 2010-11

Wow, two pretty harsh posts recently. I kind feel like Dark Helmet in Spaceballs when he orders his troops to fire across the Princess' spaceship's nose.
" I said at her nose NOT up it!" etc....

" I'm surrounded by........as_________"

I have faith that better days are ahead. Are those days included in this weekend? Time will tell....
