Playoff Results 2021

Skylar Fontaine unassisted after the turnover mentioned. Great game but it was filling up with interference by the end I’m glad it ended when it did. Enjoyed watching UMD. What TTT said holds true - NU wears you down.

That turnover happened because of a penalty committed by nu...such bad officiating. Ridiculus penalties that weren't called on both teams...

Totally agree. I will say my opinion of NU certainly change during the game. They are going to be a handful for whoever makes the championship!

While there was a non-call in advance of the NU goal, a UMD player had the puck fully on her stick after that and tried to pass through the middle, which created the turnover. So it wasn't as blatant a missed call as if it had led immediately to NU gaining possession.

The problem lies with #16 for UMD beating the nu player with her skating but then the hook nullifies that. As a referee that has to be called, as it is in UMD's defensive zone and it most likely is going to lead to the opponent getting a scoring opportunity. Indeed it did and as I watched it unfold I was hoping nu wouldn't score because then that would be a sucky way to lose.

UMD was turning it over too many times before that play anyway as they were clearly gassed. It felt like just a matter of time before NU ended it.

Admittedly, I'm on the right side of the NU-UMD outcome but, really, is there anything more dramatic than sudden death OT in hockey? Somebody tell me again how 3x3 and/or shootout is better. (BTW, I don't have any nails left. And they just grew back after getting chewed away during the men's Beanpot sudden death OT in 2019.)

The disparity in penalties game to game is quite something. 11 in the CHA tourney game Hurst lost (and would have been a 12th but RMU scored). 4 in this one with almost a full extra period. While putting away the whistles is annoying, games loaded with endless penalties is somehow worse.

The refs were Katie Guay, ECAC (who does some ECAC men's games, as well) and Derek Zuckerman, also ECAC.

They did the Ohio State-BC game on Tuesday. (There were eight penalties called in that one.)

But there were thirty seconds or whatever away from a fifteen minute break, and time to rest up, etc.

True. But both my wife felt NU was clearly the better team in OT. I think the UMD turnover was by a freshman. If that’s the case it could have been some inexperience involved (not meant as a criticism).
