Plattsburgh State Hockey 2015-16 - Bob's 27th work in progress ...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2015-16 - Bob's 27th work in progress ...

I don't understand why there would be a need for a big shakeup?

Plattsburgh was one of the best teams in the country all season. They had two games that killed their chances. Losing to Williams in a game they dominated shots wise and then laying an egg vs. Geneseo in the SUNYAC finals.

I'd venture that barring some extreme and unforeseen event (scandal) or budgetary concern (there was an article in the student paper about a $4 million deficit), Emery will be the head coach as long as he chooses to. The issue with replacing him would be who would they get that's better? How many great coaches are looking for a job? There are only two obvious candidates for a succession should Emery decide he's done all he can here and moves on: sliding Houle over from the women's side or poaching Moffat back from Castleton.

I don't think Emery is going to be forced out and I'd be very surprised to see him step aside over one setback. I think we need to be patient. With more programs going after generally the same pool of players, teams are more even and the road to getting that trophy gets even tougher. I was impressed by this year's crop of freshmen. I'm interested to see what happens this November.

I hate posting on this site because it just ends up getting slammed. However, I heard about some stuff going back and forth after the finals. Docile and tired Emery and talking a lot about being done! Who knows man! After making this comment, I am going to stay out of it! I follow typically and don't like to get involved. Worth mentioning though in my quessyimation! I'll let you all talk, but I have heard this is not normal for Emery.

Way to post a vague, non-provable statement and then stand back and watch the carnage... Real responsible. He's 52 years old and I doubt coaching Plattsburgh is lucrative enough to retire early, so what else is he going to do? He just won 20 games (again) so he isn't getting fired... Deep breath.

State employees who wish to maximize their defined benefit pension cannot receive payments until age 55 and accruing 30 yrs without incurring huge penalties. Why give up (arguably) the best gig in Eastern D3 hockey?

Way to look past your own teams' responsibility, Derek. Plattsburgh absolutely wins the comparison with UWSP if Oswego and Norwich have anything near a respectable winning percentage this year ;)

TIC, of course.

Understand that I have no inside information whatsoever. My thought is that Bob was probably discouraged ( who can blame him?) and the "done" comment was probably in reference to the Cards being done insofar as being selected for the big dance. Time will tell I guess

NCAA Division III Tournament - 3PM - 3/12/2016 Lady Cards face Amherst College :)

Complete and useless drivel. For one, show him the respect he deserves...it's Coach Emery. Secondly the top 5 winningest College hockey Coach in all divisions is going to step down? I was a bit irate when I read this earlier and chose to take some time before I responded. This might be the most idiotic statement I have ever read on the internet. He is a great Coach and darn nice guy. He deserves more respect than a statement such as this.

With all due respect, and by no means am I advocating his original post, but three things here.

1. Bob has been at Plattsburgh since a young age. He now has young kids (great kids too) who are big into sports themselves. The amount of time Bob puts in is so underestimated. Maybe he does want a break to be with his kids every weekend instead of on a bus out to Buffalo, Oswego, practices ect ect?

2. Budget - self explanatory. Funds get cut (pay, recruiting, facilities, expenses ect) maybe?

3. New boss in town.

Again I'm not saying comging on uscho and throwing out these accusations are worth the time. But if it was true, that's between Bob and his staff, not USCHO members.

I'm fairly confident that Coach Emery will have a great working relationship with his new AD. I just believe the man deserves much more respect than this. I am not arguing with you. This gentleman lives and breathes hockey, he isn't going anywhere in the near future.

Much ado about nothing. New poster looking to ruffle a few Cardinal feathers.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2015-16 - Bob's 27th work in progress ...

I agree with the 2 loses being a factor in not getting a bid but something doesn't add up. The Williams game was complete domination for 60 plus minutes but lost to a team that quite frankly wasn't very good and their goalie stole a game for them. The Geneseo game was bizarre, dominated at the beginning and for the most part the first two periods but couldn't score and it seemed Geneseo scored on almost all their opportunities. The final score was not indicative of the game at all as was the Williams game. But how does a team lose in it's quarter final conference playoff game to a sub .500 team and still get a bid? Maybe I have some facts incorrect and if that's the case by all means someone correct me. Thanks

This Laker fan agrees (gulp!). I'm baffled. I figured you guys were a lock and threw the Genny game just to get another SUNYAC team in (just kidding on that). Can someone who understands the navigation of the smoke-filled room please explain how a top 5 team almost all year gets shut out. I understand the automatic bid part, but....

Edit:

Oh yeah, that. Thanks. Still ugh... As President Clinton once said "I feel your pain."

I was on there......what I saw was the deciding factor between Williams and Plattsburgh was the head to head game. I know the intentions of the system is to take in all the factors to get the best 11 teams but I think it's flawed. No team should be at the NCAA Tournament having lost in the manner that Williams did. That should have eliminated them from tournament consideration and therefore the head to head doesn't come into play. If the goal of the tournament is to have the best 11 teams in the nation there then they have fallen short in my estimation.

Williams and UWSP beat Plattsburgh in the 5 Primary Criteria used to select the 3 Pool C Bids...

1. Win %
2. Strength of Schedule
3. Record vs Ranked (NCAA Ranking only)
4. Common Opponents
5. Head to Head

The committee compares each criteria and who ever has the better number gets a +1. At the end, who ever has the highest total wins. There are a group of secondary criteria - Last 25, Record vs ALL teams (includes DII ect) and a couple others. If still tied after that...good luck.

So if a team goes undefeated all year, wins every game by 5 goals, and then losses in their QF Conference tournament... they shouldn't get a bid? A season's resume isn't built on one game, good or bad.

I don't disagree with you that part of the system is flawed, but this IS the system that all teams have played by. You keep harping on the Williams loss, yet it was probably the lack of tough competition this year (Fitchburg State, Canton, the down year for Norwich/Oswego) that kept Plattsburgh out of the dance. From what I gather running the numbers it was not against Williams, but actually against UWSP in which Plattsburgh was edged by the small margin (yet big when it comes to SOS). Plattsburgh lost just about every category to Williams. When you lose has nothing to do with it, just as it doesn't in ANY other NCAA playoff system. Look at March Madness....if Kansas doesn't win their league, it won't take them out of the conversation. One game (with regards to the NCAA Selection Committee) doesn't make a season, and honestly shouldn't. Hot goalie, 50-10 SOG....anything can happen in 1 game, don't ruin a perfect season over 1 game. What needs to happen is the NCAA needs to get their head out of their ..... and allow the multi-game playoffs and not penalize teams/conferences for doing it in their conference playoffs to ensure the best teams win. The old days it was a SERIES for even the National Title game. We would all love to see more Pool C bids as well, but this process is used in every sport, their not going to change it for just hockey...
