Normally, when the Cardinals see Middlebury on their schedule, it grabs their attention.
But the Panthers are under .500 this season, and Plattsburgh State had a ranked opponent coming into Stafford Ice Arena the next day. So the Cardinals may have made the mistake of overlooking Middlebury on Friday.
The Panthers (5-6-2) took a first-period lead and went on to beat Plattsburgh 3-1 in nonleague men’s hockey.
“We may have looked at their record a little (too) much; could’ve looked past them, ready for Williams,” Plattsburgh senior Preston Kaye said.
The third-ranked Cardinals (12-3-1) are set to host No. 13 Williams tonight.
Middlebury went up 1-0 in the first period on a goal by Ronald Fishman. The Cardinals had two premium chances in the period: Middlebury goalie Stephen Klein stopped a point-blank shot about four minutes in and then cleared the rebound just in time, and Connor Toomey got a breakaway in the final minute but was also denied by Klein.
The Panthers outshot the Cardinals 8-4. Klein said the good start was important.
“I know that was the focus going into the game; we wanted to get the first goal,” he said. “That’s something we haven’t done a whole lot this year. So to get the first goal and come out strong like that, that’s huge.”
Cameron Romoff scored his first goal of the year on a wrist shot from the right circle to put Middlebury ahead 2-0 at 5:12 of the second. But Plattsburgh went right down and got itself on the board, with Matt Quilty knocking in the puck from in close.
Kaye said the Cardinals tried to focus on firing more shots in the final period.
“It’s been a few games since we’ve had over 30, 35 shots. So we really wanted to emphasize getting pucks on net,” the defenseman said. “And that’s something that we didn’t do a good job of.”
The Cardinals got a power play with 9:27 left, but instead of evening the score, they fell further behind. Middlebury's George Ordway brought the puck down the right side and put the puck in the top-left corner for an unassisted short-handed goal.
Plattsburgh pulled its goalie with a few minutes left, and Brendan McGovern nearly added to Middlebury’s lead, instead bouncing a puck off the post.
Brady Rouleau made his first start in Plattsburgh’s net since he was injured Jan. 2. He made 19 saves and suffered his third loss of the season. Klein also had 19 stops.
Middlebury won just two games in the first semester, and one of their losses was a 4-2 decision against Plattsburgh. Before Friday, the Panthers were 2-2 in the second half, and Klein said the win will give them something to build on.
“It’s fantastic. It’s a big stepping stone for our team,” the freshman said. “I know my first start was against this team, so to get a win was pretty huge.”

0-6 on the power play against one of the worst penalty kills in DIII...unacceptable. Until that gets fixed Plattsburgh is more of a pretender than a contender.....
Yes but he never said he became a fan "OF" Potsdam. I mean come on, when a team plays against Potsdam anyone will look like the 1980 Soviet team....
I hated Herbies..........ow and ya forgot the SHG as well, yes the PP has to get going, seems like all teams need at least 1 PPG/game.Time for the "Herbies" ??
Based on 2 periods tonight, I'd toss the Herbie and go with Flubber.Time for the "Herbies" ??
Before the midway point of Saturday’s second period, all three of Plattsburgh State’s goalies had given up at least one goal.
Things only got a little better for the Cardinals from there.
Craig Kitto tallied a hat trick and Williams led 6-1 at one point before notching a 6-3 nonconference men’s hockey win at Stafford Ice Arena. The game marked the first time since the 2010-11 season that the Cardinals have lost consecutive regular-season games.
But Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery thought his team’s effort was better than in Friday’s 3-1 defeat against Middlebury.
“I’m way more satisfied with that team in that locker room (Saturday night) than I was (Friday) night. I felt like my heart got ripped out (Friday) night,” Emery said. Saturday “was a very odd game. I thought guys played hard for 60 minutes. And usually a Plattsburgh State hockey team, when they play that hard for 60 minutes, usually comes up on top.
“It seemed like all the bounces were going their way and all the bounces weren’t going ours.”
Kitto put the puck in 1:17 into the game to start things off for No. 13 Williams (9-3-2). Eight minutes later, Dan Doherty batted a rebound past Spencer Finney, who was then pulled in favor of Brady Rouleau. Emery said Finney was injured on the first goal.
When a loose puck bounced into the right side of the crease, David Italiano knocked it over to Kitto, who flipped it high over Rouleau at 12:38.
Williams’ three goals came despite its total of just five shots, while No. 3 Plattsburgh fired 12 with nothing to show for them.
“We had some good chances early,” Williams coach Bill Kangas said. “They came at us with a lot of energy, and we were able to put pucks in space. We were able to get a couple rebound goals, a couple pucks around the net, and it kinda got us going a little bit.”
Kangas added that the Ephs were mindful of a 5-4 overtime loss at Stafford two years ago, when the Cardinals came back from a 4-1 deficit.
But Williams just kept rolling in the second period, chasing Rouleau out of the net early on, after a Kitto shot hit the goalie and skipped over his pad and into the net. Ryan Hubbard took over for Rouleau
The third goalie was not the charm for the Cardinals — Italiano slid the puck just inside the left post at 7:11 for a 5-0 lead.
Plattsburgh (12-4-1) finally got on the board at 14:33 with a dirty goal from defenseman Patrick Hermans. Greg Johnson notched a power-play goal shortly before the horn to send the Ephs to the dressing room with a 6-1 cushion.
Hermans, who did not play Friday, netted two more goals for the Cardinals in the third. Heading into the game, the sophomore had one goal and one assist.
The Cardinals dressed seven defensemen and just 11 forwards, and they lost two forwards in the second period. Josh Koerner got leveled in front of the Williams bench. He had a bandage put on his face while on the bench but didn’t take another shift or return in the third. Late in the second, Kyle Hall favored one leg while being helped off the ice.
Plattsburgh finished the game with a whopping 58-18 advantage in shots on goal, and Williams netminder Sean Dougherty made 55 saves.
“It makes it tough on a team when the goalie’s playing that well on the other side,” Kangas said. “So when they were pressing us, we were able to get some opportunities.”
Rouleau, who made one save, was tagged with the loss, while Hubbard made nine saves on 11 shots.
The Cardinals, who had not surrendered six goals in a game since Nov. 19, 2010, return to SUNY Athletic Conference play Friday against Potsdam.
“Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to move up, and maybe we needed that, I don’t know,” Emery said. “But Williams is a good hockey team, and they found a way to win.
“We can’t have excuses. We didn’t win the game (Saturday), but I’m pleased with the effort.”

Coach Coppola is not the one getting the puck poke-checked away at the attacking blueline and failing to get pucks in deep. Coach Coppola isn't the one making ill-advised passes in short handed opportunities.
The average PP in DIII is currently 19.35%. Interesting note, since the start of the second semester Plattsburgh is 6 for 31...19.35%. So for those who want Coppola fired, it IS improving. Is Plattsburgh near the mid 20's low 30%'s like some schools? No. But it sure beats the 11% they hovered around for several weeks.
Just a side note... Plattsburgh has scored 11 power play goals now which make up 17.4% of their overall goals. Only Cortland (15%) and UWSP (15.4%) have a lower percentage. Of the Top 30 offensive teams Utica has scored 36% of their goals on the PP followed by Williams (35.5). Other notables:
SNC 27.1
OSU 25.4
NOR 23.3
As far as firing Emery goes....yea....anyways ....that's about as long as that deserves thought....
Last I checked Plattsburgh is still first in the SUNYAC and is playing Potsdam Friday night. Past is the past....
In my best Aaron Rodgers voice.....
R-E-L-A-X.....Relax....
pack should be up more than 13..discusssssssRelax he does, Pack up 13-0 in the 2nd. Fire Emery or the other guy is just nonsense.
Yeah, they're up by 16!pack should be up more than 13..discusssssss![]()
