Amherst takes Winter Classic in shootout - {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/4/2015}

Amherst found some shootout magic at Stafford Ice Arena this weekend.

After reaching the championship game via a shootout on Friday, the Lord Jeffs claimed the Buck Supply & Distribution-W.B. Mason Winter Classic men’s hockey tournament by beating Plattsburgh State 1-0 in a shootout Saturday. Officially, the game was recorded as a 0-0 tie.

Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery focused on a silver lining — his team earned a win and a draw on the weekend — but senior captain Brandon Beadow said the tie still stung.

“It’s kinda tough right now, obviously not getting the championship, but I thought we had a great weekend,” Beadow said. “Pretty good way to start the (new) year — obviously not allowing a goal in regulation for 120 minutes.”
The defenseman noted that it was the first time the Cardinals were in a shootout during his career. Amherst’s Daniel Merenich said Friday’s experience helped prepare the 15th-ranked Jeffs (6-2-2).

After the goaltenders stopped the first three attempts, Merenich came in from the right and reached around Spencer Finney’s left side to put the puck in. That put the pressure on Plattsburgh’s final shooter, Kevin Emmerling, who was denied by Danny Vitale.

Neither team had been shut out before Saturday, and Merenich said the Jeffs’ aggression helped them keep the seventh-ranked Cardinals (10-2-1) off the board.

“Our No. 1 thing is going as hard as we can every single shift — don’t take a shift off,” the senior forward said. “And it paid off. We were pressuring their defense the entire time. They can’t get out of their zone, they can’t go on offense.”

Plattsburgh’s Preston Kaye rang a shot off the inside edge of the left post in the first period. In the second, Finney had to make 12 saves to keep Amherst scoreless.

When both teams came up empty in the third as well, they went to a five-minute overtime.

Connor Toomey almost put the game away for the Cardinals about two minutes into the extra period. He took a shot from the right doorstep and the goal light went on, but the officials ruled there was no goal.
“I thought it went in. I thought the referee waved it in, but … he said he pointed at the other circle,” Beadow said. “So that was pretty tough. You get your hopes up.

“But that was a great chance by (Toomey). I thought we had some other great chances, too. A couple more minutes, I think we would’ve had it.”

Vitale made 38 saves and was named the MVP. Aaron Deutsch and Mike Rowbotham represented the Jeffs on the All-Tournament Team. Plattsburgh’s Ayrton Valente and Paul Fregeau made the squad.

Finney finished with 31 stops.

“I thought our guys played hard,” Emery said. “I thought we came to play. I thought we had a lot of good looks (Saturday). Just gotta find ways to win the game. Good teams find ways to pull out those games.”

Utica took a 2-0 lead in the second period of the consolation game and beat New England College 4-0 to finish third in the tournament. Louie Educate had two goals and an assist for the Pioneers (6-5-3) and was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

In the final, Plattsburgh wore throwback uniforms that included blue pants and white jerseys with blue lettering. The jerseys will be auctioned off Jan. 30.

The Cardinals have a quick turnaround — they host Norwich in a nonconference game Tuesday.

Thoughts on next years Cardinal Classic....

Colby College (7th in NESCAC in 13-14)
Nazareth (last ECAC West in 13-14)
Framingham State (4th MASCAC in 13-14)

Colby and Framingham State currently have 2 wins a piece so far this season.......I guess when you don't win your own tournament 3 years in a row its time to lessen the field....

Interesting to see who will start Tuesday night if Roli is cleared. I think it's time to let Finney have a shot at a top DIII team. I hope there are a whole bunch of "1-5" signs up around the locker room when Norwich comes in with their #1 ranking Tuesday night....

Perhaps the Cards were looking ahead to the Tues game which resulted in last nights offensive drought. On Naz, they might have sucked last night, but I think that program is one to watch the next couple seasons.
I can agree--need to win all the ones at home....

I don't think it was looking ahead. The Cards played a very good game, very defensive and had some serious grade A scoring chances. That one near the end of regulation might have gone in? I don't know but was waved off after the light went on. The Amherst senior goalie was excellent and came up very big. Their team played well also. Upon reflection, I'm not upset at all with the play and it should certainly help when facing Norwich Tuesday night. Good job, Cards.

There was a great replay of the play and the puck never went in. Great chance, but never crossed the line. For a 0-0 game there were a ton of chances (more favoring Plattsburgh). There was no looking ahead. Plattsburgh battled and just couldn't make their break. 1-0-1 on the weekend giving up 0 goals, I'll take it.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Cardinal Classic next year is going to be interesting one. I'm told that the lineup will feature Colby, Framingham State (or Fitchburg... Emery couldn't remember which it was), and Nazareth.

Based on this year's performance to date, Naz is - on paper - the best of those 3, and it will be George Roll's first game coaching at the Ronnie B since Oswego's 5-3 win on February 8th 2003.

My thoughts exactly.

Well, this year's tourney was considered probably one of the best with some quality teams. Maybe it is time to take a page from some unnamed schools and play some inferior teams. You get the wins, your record gets better and you rise in the polls. So why not . It certainly hasn't helped at the end of the year to do otherwise.

Cardinals host top-ranked Cadets in showdown - {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/6/2015}

In their last meeting, Norwich piled on five goals before Plattsburgh State finally scored in the third period to avoid being shut out.

A loss like that is hard to forget.

“I think it left a bitter taste in our mouth,” Plattsburgh senior Brandon Beadow said. “That was obviously our worst loss of the year and probably one of the worst losses I think I’ve had in a couple years. So anytime that happens to you, you can’t wait for the next time you play ‘em.

“So I think we’ve got a lot to prove to ourselves and to them. So I look forward to it.”

The No. 7-ranked Cardinals (10-2-1) will get another crack at the Cadets (10-0-1) in a nonconference game at the Stafford Ice Arena tonight.

Norwich and Plattsburgh were ranked second and third, respectively, in the USCHO.com Division III Men’s Poll when they played Nov. 28 in the opening round of the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout. But the Cadets clearly outplayed the Cardinals, netting three goals in a nine-minute span in the second period and tacking on two more in the third.

Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said there are “a million things” the Cardinals need to do better this time around, adding, “We just had a real bad game.”

Norwich tied Concordia on Nov. 29 and has won all four of its games since then, including a 4-1 victory over Buffalo State on Saturday.

William Pelletier (7-5-12) and Dean Niezgoda (4-8-12) have been the Cadets’ top offensive threats, while Ty Reichenbach and Braeden Ostepchuk have each played six games in net.

Norwich ranks second in the country in scoring defense, allowing just one goal per game.

“Obviously it’s going to be a battle,” Emery said. “We gotta just keep trying to get better and better. We have a lot of guys, different guys, contributing, and hopefully we can play a good, solid game (tonight) and focus on what we focused on this (past) weekend.”

Plattsburgh did not give up a goal while picking up a win and a tie in the Buck Supply & Distribution-W.B. Mason Winter Classic.

Michael Cassidy leads the Cardinals with 13 points, including a team-high seven goals. Kevin Emmerling has scored five goals and earned five assists, and Connor Toomey has 11 points.

Goalie Brady Rouleau has suffered both of Plattsburgh’s losses (and has won four games), while Spencer Finney is 6-0-1.

The Cardinals are 1-2-1 against ranked teams this season. Beadow said that while the Cardinals have had the Cadets in the back of their minds since the last game, they can’t get too preoccupied with their opponent tonight.

“I think if we start focusing on another team, we’ll kind of get away from our game plan,” Beadow said. “So focus on the things we do well — get pucks deep, work hard, keep it simple.”

Was not thrilled with the NSB field this year, but admittedly everybody figured it would be the real NU against Neumann in the final, but Neumann did not come through - this also hurt NU's SOS metrics.

Cardinals get even with top-ranked Norwich - {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/7/2015} - Note there are video interviews on the site.

The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team earned some redemption Tuesday.

After losing to Norwich 5-1 in November, the Cardinals gave the Cadets some of their own medicine in a 4-1 nonconference victory at Stafford Ice Arena.

Connor Toomey scored two goals and Spencer Finney was 18 seconds shy of a shutout.

“The first game, they took it to us, so it was nice to return the favor in this game,” Toomey said.

Norwich (11-1-1) came into the game without a loss and had just been voted the top team in the USCHO.com Division III Men’s Poll on Monday. Toomey said the Cadets’ ranking was posted in Plattsburgh’s locker room, and Finney said it made the win that much sweeter.

“It feels awesome,” the goalie said. “It just feels great beating the No. 1 team in the country.”

Like the Nov. 28 meeting, Tuesday's game started with a scoreless first period followed by a flurry of goals from one team in the second. This time it was No. 7 Plattsburgh that owned the scoreboard the middle period.

Toomey scored on a breakaway 38 seconds in to spark the Cardinals (11-2-1) and then notched a power-play goal at the two-minute mark.

Luke Baleshta tallied down low, and Connor Gorman poked in a rebound late in the period while Plattsburgh was short-handed.

The Cardinals' four goals came on just eight shot on net in the period.

Toomey said the opening goal was key.

“I thought it really set the tone on how we played the rest of the game,” the senior forward said. “I think we did a good job finishing the game.”

Finney started in net for the second straight game and nearly recorded a second straight shutout — he surrendered a goal to Dean Niezgoda in the final minute of the game. Finney made 30 saves for his seventh win.

Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said the netminder helped the Cardinals get through what he thought was a defensively sloppy second period.

“I don’t think the game was a 4-0, 4-1 game,” Emery said. “I thought Finney played well in the second period. We had a lot of times in the second period we couldn’t get the puck out of our zone, and Norwich got a lot of good chances. But Finney was equal to the task.”

The coach added that the Cardinals played smarter in the third period.

Braeden Ostepchuk played the first two periods in Norwich’s net, stopping 14 shots and taking the loss.
