Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...
The team looked pretty good last night, and didn't seem to have any post-holiday rust issues. They played all 60 minutes, and even up 5-0 looked hungry for more goals. What little time was spent on the Powerplay looked promising (read: they actually took shots at the net).
It was good to see Fregeau get on the score board. When he played last semester he looked a bit out of sorts, like he didn't quite understand the system yet, and that probably accounted for the fact that he was 0-1-1 going into the holiday break. Last night, he seemed to mesh well with Koerner and Quilty, and it showed on the scoreboard. As someone sitting near me said when Fregeau scored his 3rd goal, "It's better to peak in the second semester than the first!"
I hope Rouleau isn't seriously injured, but I would say even with a small knock it was wise to pull him out of the game. At 5-0, the only reason to keep him in would have been to try to earn him the shutout, and nobody really cares about individual statistics (at least, they shouldn't). Even with about 45 seconds to stretch and no opportunity to warm up properly because Emery had already burned his TO, Hubbard looked solid coming off the bench. All the talk is about Brady and Spencer in the starting rotation, but the reality is that we have THREE great 'tenders on the roster now.
Also of note: no mystery player. No additions to the team are apparent at this time. Unconfirmed rumor from a source who will remain anonymous is that the mystery player's issues in joining the team are academic in nature. Oh well, if they can't get it done in the classroom, I don't care if they can get it done or not on the ice. (Of course, I can't say much, since I am no longer a Graduate Student at Plattsburgh State due to academic shortcomings...) In any case, I don't know if new additions were really the answer in he first place. This team has talent, and if they can get it together and play the way Emery wants them to play, they will go far.
As for the Amherst-Utica matchup: While Utica certainly had stretches of dominance in the 2nd and 3rd periods, I felt that Amherst was the faster and more organized team for the entire game. Utica may have outshot the Lord Jeffs, and a few of those really made Vitale work between the pipes, Amherst seemed to have more 'quality' opportunities to score, and Wells largely kept Utica in a position to win the game. After Utica went up 3-1, they took their foot of the gas, and got burned as a result. In the OT, it was all Amherst - the Pioneers could barely get it out of their zone. All in all, the two goaltenders were the best players on the ice yesterday afternoon, and I think the (slightly) better team advanced to the championship game. Amherst will be a much tougher test for the Cardinals.
