Plattsburgh State went into Saturday’s third period with a one-goal lead against the fifth-leading offense in Division III men’s hockey.
That slim margin was all they needed.
Connor Gorman scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and the Cardinals held off No. 2 seed Oswego in the third for a 2-1 victory in the SUNY Athletic Conference championship game at Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh (20-5-2) earned the conference’s automatic NCAA tournament bid.
Goaltender Brady Rouleau said protecting that 2-1 lead in the third was a tough task.
“Nerve-racking,” he said. “One-goal lead, with the goalie pulled and six players out there, lot of traffic. But I guess it’s just kinda being zoned in and trying not to let the crowd get to you in all the frantic moments.
“But all in all I think the guys really pulled through (Saturday). I gotta give credit to all of them.”
The top-seeded Cardinals played a strong first period and grabbed a lead in the second.
While Plattsburgh had its second power play of the game, Brandon Beadow took a shot from the left point, and Connor Toomey redirected it into the net at 5:23.
Morgan Bonner tied it up six minutes later by banging a rebound into the left side. With 2:27 left in the period, Gorman took a cross-ice pass from Toomey and one-timed it past Oswego (18-4-4) goalie Matt Zawadzki to put the Cardinals back on top.
“We were able to answer right back when they scored, which was huge,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “Connor Gorman, you know, he’s a gamer, and he came up with a big goal there for us.
“We got panicky a little bit at times in the third, but in the end we blocked the shots when we had to, we got the pucks out when we had to and really sacrificed a lot in the third period to win the game.”
Zawadzki headed to bench with 1:04 left in the game, and Plattsburgh cleared the puck out of its zone several times to run out the clock.
Toomey, who finished with two points and has 12 in his last six games, was named the tournament MVP.
“He’s very a skilled player, and he’s getting more comfortable and more confident and it showed,” Emery said. “He’s hands down the MVP going back to last weekend.”
Rouleau turned away 17 shots to pick up the win. The sophomore transferred in from Quinnipiac this season and alternated starts with Spencer Finney until Finney was injured in January.
Rouleau said being in net for a championship meant a lot to him.
“Oh man, I don’t think I’ve ever won anything in hockey yet. So I think this is my first,” he said. “Just to be able to play with these guys is a blessing. I definitely cherish every day coming to the rink with these guys.
“To win, everybody deserves it in this locker room. I’m really excited.”
Gorman and Beadow represented Plattsburgh on the All-Tournament Team. Zawadzki, who had 22 saves, also made the squad.
The Cardinals lost to Oswego in the 2013 SUNYAC final, and last year’s ending was even more painful — a semifinal defeat against the Lakers.
“This definitely makes up for it, but we’re not done yet,” Gorman said.
Plattsburgh will learn who and when it plays in the Division III tournament when the field is released at 10:30 a.m. Monday on ncaa.com.
