Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Mike Jones? How quickly we forget this game. "Interference" 15-16 minutes into overtime between the penalty box doors. I still hold a grudge over that one...

I have seen Jones ref and he really does a nice job and gets the respect of the players on the ice. I see players laughing and chatting with him and that is a good sign compared to some of these refs that think the game is all about them.

(Said in jest...) I'll bet Cadet fans think he's a fine official...

I didn't forget about that call. He blew it and would probably love to have it back. The other ref in that game should've called something/anything on Norwich right off the faceoff to negate the PP. Seen enough of him since to see what a good official he is. Played the game at RIT, so he knows the importance of these games. And no, I don't know him, lol !!

Cardinals fend off Golden Eagles, earn spot in final - {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 3/2/2015} Site includes videos.

Bob Emery knew it was coming.

Plattsburgh State was still leading its SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey semifinal by three goals, but Emery felt if the Cardinals kept playing the way they had for the first three-and-a-half minutes of the second period, the lead would be in jeopardy.
“I sensed it. I tried to call a timeout to try to stop it from happening,” Plattsburgh’s coach said. “And obviously the timeout was a waste, because they didn’t listen to me during the timeout.”

Sure enough, Brockport scored three straight goals to tie the score.

But the message did get through to the top-seeded Cardinals after the second intermission. They tallied two quick goals in the third and held off the Golden Eagles 7-5 at Stafford Ice Arena.

“I think we had some good senior leadership coming out of the locker room after the second period. A couple of seniors got up and had a few things to say,” Emery said. “They didn’t want this to be their last game, so hats off to those guys.”

The Cardinals (19-5-2) earned at least one more game — against Oswego in next Saturday’s conference championship tiltat Stafford.

After No. 6 seed Brockport (13-12-2) erased its deficit in the second period, it didn’t take the Cardinals long to get the lead back in the third. They went on the power play early on, and Mark Constantine got to the left doorstep and one-timed a pass into an open netto make it 5-4.

“I knew it’d be a big goal for the team, lift their spirits,” the senior forward said. “And I’m happy I got it.”

Connor Gorman added another power-play goal at 6:21 to give Plattsburgh a two-goal cushion, which it needed.

Brockport’s Chris Luker scored on a long shot during a man advantage to bring his team within a goal. But Michael Cassidy put the puck in the empty net at 18:14 to seal it for the Cardinals.

Brady Rouleau stopped 15 shots to earn the victory. Aaron Green turned away 34 at the other end.

Connor Toomey put the Cardinals in front just 1:14 into the game. Dillan Fox scored on the rush to make it 2-0, but Brockport’s Bobby Chayka put one in at the other end just36 seconds later.
While the Cardinals had a power play in the middle of the first period, Constantine chipped in a shot from the extended goal line. Then Toomey skated in and tucked the puck inside the left post for an unassisted goal and a 4-1 lead just before theperiod ended.

Brockport managed just five shots on goal in the first, while Plattsburgh fired 23.
The Golden Eagles took over in the second.

Chayka scored on a shot from the right side at 10:43 and then fired a shot from the left circle while his team was short-handed to make it 4-3. Before Saturday, the senior defenseman had three goals all season.

Just over two minutes after Chayka’s hat-trick goal, Troy Polino ripped a shot from the top of the slot and beat Rouleau high, knotting the score.

The Golden Eagles scored three goals on eight shots in the period.

“I think we got a little too excited, maybe. We thought the game was won, maybe, which was terrible on our part,” Constantine said. “But we came in the locker room and we gathered ourselves, and we came out in the third and I think it was one of the best thirds we’ve had.”

USCHO, SUNYAC announce All-Rookie Team, defensive player awards

Taff and Valente pick up well-deserved all-rookie nods on D, while Brandon Beadow completes his four-year sweep as the SUNYAC's top defensive defenseman, surprising nobody who's had the pleasure of watching him shut down team after team over the course of his Cardinal career.

WTOP10 was prepared to travel and produce the live broadcast....the request was politely declined. My understanding is NSN is producing the game...

Cardinals, Lakers set for SUNYAC final - {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 3/7/2015}

Plattsburgh State clinched the SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey regular-season title by way of an Oswego slip-up two weeks ago.

Now the Cardinals are looking to beat the Lakers head-to-head for another championship.

No. 2 seed Oswego will visit Stafford Ice Arena tonight for the SUNYAC tournament final. The winner will claim the conference’s automatic NCAA bid.

The Lakers seemed to be headed to the SUNYAC’s top seed until they fell to Potsdam Feb. 21.

“They probably learned a lot from that game,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “You learn more about yourselves from a loss than a win.

“They have a lot of great players, a lot of playoff experience. They’re sitting pretty in the NCAA polls. I think, win or lose, they’ll get a bid. So I’m sure they’ll come in and play with confidence.”

Oswego (18-3-4) is third in the East Region in this week’s NCAA Regional Rankings, which help determine the NCAA tournament field. Plattsburgh (19-5-2) is seventh.

The Lakers reached today’s championship game by skating past Buffalo State 2-0 last week. Brandon Adams scored both goals, and Matt Zawadzki, who has a 2.08 goals-against-average and .924 save percentage, earned the shutout.

Shawn Hulshof is Oswego’s top offensive threat — and one of the top scorers in Division III. He’s tied for fifth in the country with a 1.60 points-per-game average and leads his team with 19 goals and 40 points.

By grabbing the top seed, the Cardinals avoided having to travel to Oswego this weekend. But playing at Stafford may not necessarily give them a leg up against their rival.

“I don’t think home ice is at all an advantage. That’s been proven in the past, and I don’t think it will be any different come this weekend,” Emery said. “I would even go one step further and say I like the way we play on their ice because it’s a bigger ice sheet.”

The Lakers probably like the way they play on the Cardinals’ ice, too. They won 3-1 at Stafford in December and beat Plattsburgh in its own rink in last year’s conference title game. That was the second straight year that Oswego ended the Cardinals’ season.

Emery said the Cardinals know all the potential ramifications of this game.

“I know the guys are excited,” Emery said. “Anytime you get into a championship game, no matter who the opponent is, it’s exciting. And throw in the fact that it’s Oswego-Plattsburgh, probably one of the biggest rivalries at any level of college hockey, it’s real exciting.”

Plattsburgh returned to the final after a one-year absence by holding off Brockport 7-5 in the semifinals. The Cardinals are unbeaten in their last six games.

Connor Toomey is their scoring leader with 29 points, and Michael Cassidy has a team-high 12 goals. Toomey has tallied 10 points in the last five games.

The Cardinals played well in their most recent contest against Oswego, a 3-3 tie Feb. 20, but Emery thought if they had been more opportunistic they could have pulled out a win.

The two teams have a history of playing close games, and Emery said, all things being equal, capitalizing on chances will probably be key again.

“Gotta leave it all on the ice,” he said. “The team that takes advantage of the other team’s mistakes will probably win the game.”
