Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

What he cost us with that debacle was two spots in the NCAA rankings AND a real good Pool C shot. He got us good.

He was just trying to give us incentive for the AQ.

The other 4 losses didn't contribute to that?

Oswego maintains hold on first place - {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/21/2015}

Plattsburgh State managed to tie first-place Oswego Friday night.

But the Cardinals really needed a win.

The Lakers’ Nick Rivait notched a power-play goal in the middle of the third period to tie the back-and-forth SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey game at 3-3, and the score stayed that way for the rest of the period and a five-minute overtime.
The Lakers maintained their one-point lead over Plattsburgh in the conference standings. They’ll host Postdam tonight, while the Cardinals will close the regular season by visiting Cortland. Plattsburgh would need to win and have Oswego lose in order to take over first place.

“In the third period we had plenty of chances to win,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “I just feel for the guys. We just can’t find a way to get that goal to win.
“The guys played hard. We just gotta be more opportunistic.”

Emery said the Cardinals started the game with a lot of energy, and freshman Brandon O’Quinn one-timed a shot 1:44 in to give them an early edge. Oswego answered in the middle of the period, with Shawn Hulshof tying the score at 8:01.
That pattern continued throughout the game. The Lakers went ahead early in the second on a Mike Montagna goal, only to have the Cardinals’ Kyle Hall even it up again two-and-a-half minutes later.

“We got a lot of good looks in the first period. To be tied 1-1 after one was tough,” Emery said. “Then the second period, we came out real flat. I called a timeout to regroup, and we scored a goal right away.”

In the third, Connor Toomey put Plattsburgh back in front at 2:13. Then Rivait tallied on the power play at 9:17.

Knowing a victory would put them ahead of the Lakers in the standings, the Cardinals pressed for goal in overtime.

“We had to be more aggressive. The players we were putting on the ice were more offensive than defensive because we needed to win,” Emery said. “In the NCAA picture, I think a loss would’ve really hurt us. If there had been no such thing (as NCAA considerations), I would’ve pulled the goalie.”

Brady Rouleau stopped 25 shots for Plattsburgh, and Matt Zawadzki turned away 30 for Oswego.

“The guys are a little down. My only game plan (for today) will be to get them mentally ready to play,” Emery said. “Anything can happen.”

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

For me , it is as Bob states, this team just can't , or doesn't have the guy to get that one goal when it really counts. Great effort ,very entertaining game to watch .

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Very nice webcast of the game by the Oswego student broadcast team. In my opinion the coverage is tops in D3 and the streaming was excellent. Plattsburgh-if they make the NCAA's I think whoever they face is going to going to be in for a big surprise. After watching them against Norwich and Oswego they must be considered one of the top 5 teams in the East, and maybe top 3. Very impressive against Oswego at Oswego. I hope they make the NCAA's.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Great college hockey game. Plattsburgh was the better team for long stretches, but the Lakers are so opportunistic. Lakers use screens, picks to let their snipers let if fly. I hope they play again in a couple weeks. Cards benefited by some of Laker injuries, but had a great game plan. I agree, the student broadcast team is great !! As far as the refereeing goes, those two guys are arguably the best and they put their whistles away. I think they missed a couple too many men on the Cards. They could've also awarded Fox a penalty shot late in the game. Turns out it was a great penalty by Willis. Zawadski made a great glove save towards the end, but Neil blocking a sure goal earlier was key. Maybe there's a Bear-trap set tonight??

Great game last night. Glad to have been there to see it. Guys had their chances early on and late to win it. Proud of the team's effort all the way around. Now, we look forward to the rematch. GO CARDS!

The Cards didn't get many breaks this year , but certainly getting help from Potsdam is a very good thing. No easy road ahead for Oswego or the Cards but it's always nice to play at home.

I am really trying to figure who is hotter right now...Potsdam or Genny ?

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

If Genny can find the back of the net a bit more they will be very tough in the playoffs with Horrigan. Hall for Potsdam gives them a chance in a a single elimination tournament. I anticipate Potsdam at Plattsburgh and Geneseo at Oswego on Saturday.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Both playing well, Genny is a little more talented in my opinion.

Give me the Hall kid from Potsdam and I'll take my chances though! He is capable of stealing games and carrying a team.

With help from Bears, Cardinals claim 1st place - {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/22/2015}[/QUOTE]

Plattsburgh State got a huge assist from its North Country rival Saturday.
Potsdam stunned Oswego minutes before the Cardinals finished up a 5-2 win over Cortland on the final day of the SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey regular season. Oswego’s loss allowed Plattsburgh to vault into first place. The Cardinals have the top seed and home-ice advantage in the conference tournament.

After tying Oswego on Friday, Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery knew there was still a chance his team could win the regular-season title. But he wasn’t really expecting it.

“I am real surprised,” he said. “I thought Oswego would have the horses to win that game. But Potsdam has been playing well, and their goalie can be really hot.

“Oswego had, obviously, an emotional game last night. Maybe they were tired. I don’t know.”

Plattsburgh (18-5-2, 13-2-1 SUNYAC) was in control in Cortland by the third period when the coaching staff got word of Oswego’s 4-2 loss.

“We found out on the bench through the headset, and we called timeout to tell the players to make sure they’d have some extra emotion to finish the game strong,” Emery said.

Connor Gorman tallied at 15:22 of the first period to break a 1-1 tie, and Plattsburgh led the rest of the way. Ayrton Valente and Alex Brenton gave the Cardinals a three-goal cushion in the second, and Connor Toomey scored during a power play in the third.

Brenton also tallied Plattsburgh’s first goal. Michael Cassidy earned three assists, and Chris Taff had two.

I wish we were a little bit more opportunistic, but I think we controlled play really well in the offensive zone,” Emery said. “Our puck possession was good, and our puck management was real good. We had a lot of shots, and I’d like to see us get a few more goals.

Brady Rouleau stopped 23 shots for the win.

Darren McCormick and Michael Mascaro scored for Cortland (9-13-3, 3-11-2).

Plattsburgh finished the conference season with 27 points, putting it one in front of Oswego. Emery pointed out that the Cardinals had been predicted to finish behind Oswego and Geneseo in the SUNYAC’s preseason poll.

“They picked us to finish third, so I guess we made a statement,” he said.

Plattsburgh will host a semifinal game next Saturday, and if it advances, it will host the championship game March 7.

What a great thing to see when you turn your phone back on after three days! Well deserved. Congrats to Roli as well, for someone who had a hard time stopping a beach ball a few weeks ago til now. 2 very capable goaltenders with some great team defense.

Shoutout to the traveling Platty Student Section that made the trip to Oz - great kids with passion - made it feel like a tourney final (maybe in two weeks at the RonnieB?) - you are welcome back any time.
