Plattsburgh State got a huge assist from its North Country rival Saturday.
Potsdam stunned Oswego minutes before the Cardinals finished up a 5-2 win over Cortland on the final day of the SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey regular season. Oswego’s loss allowed Plattsburgh to vault into first place. The Cardinals have the top seed and home-ice advantage in the conference tournament.
After tying Oswego on Friday, Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery knew there was still a chance his team could win the regular-season title. But he wasn’t really expecting it.
“I am real surprised,” he said. “I thought Oswego would have the horses to win that game. But Potsdam has been playing well, and their goalie can be really hot.
“Oswego had, obviously, an emotional game last night. Maybe they were tired. I don’t know.”
Plattsburgh (18-5-2, 13-2-1 SUNYAC) was in control in Cortland by the third period when the coaching staff got word of Oswego’s 4-2 loss.
“We found out on the bench through the headset, and we called timeout to tell the players to make sure they’d have some extra emotion to finish the game strong,” Emery said.
Connor Gorman tallied at 15:22 of the first period to break a 1-1 tie, and Plattsburgh led the rest of the way. Ayrton Valente and Alex Brenton gave the Cardinals a three-goal cushion in the second, and Connor Toomey scored during a power play in the third.
Brenton also tallied Plattsburgh’s first goal. Michael Cassidy earned three assists, and Chris Taff had two.
“I wish we were a little bit more opportunistic, but I think we controlled play really well in the offensive zone,” Emery said. “Our puck possession was good, and our puck management was real good. We had a lot of shots, and I’d like to see us get a few more goals.”
Brady Rouleau stopped 23 shots for the win.
Darren McCormick and Michael Mascaro scored for Cortland (9-13-3, 3-11-2).
Plattsburgh finished the conference season with 27 points, putting it one in front of Oswego. Emery pointed out that the Cardinals had been predicted to finish behind Oswego and Geneseo in the SUNYAC’s preseason poll.
“They picked us to finish third, so I guess we made a statement,” he said.
Plattsburgh will host a semifinal game next Saturday, and if it advances, it will host the championship game March 7.
