Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Anyone have a handle on how many bench penalties Bob has received over the years?

I'd be willing to bet that it wouldn't take both hands to count them all. It may not even take one hand. That may be the first one I've ever seen, but I very rarely get to away games and I was off the college in the early 90s.

Sidenote: I wonder if he'll suspend himself an extra game for the Unsportsmanlike penalty?

I have seen him get them before - but they are rare - and he is mellowing.

It was deja vu

I was here.

I do not recall what this was? --- This doesn't say.

He must have had good reason to get a bench minor, Coach Emery is a usually a very disciplined person. Sometimes you gotta stand up for your players.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Best part of this weekend's hockey: after the Geneseo game, when the captains went over to shake the hand of the officials, they did so with no problems for Prim and the two linesman... But no Cardinal offered a handshake to Maciejewski, and instead only offered him an earful of their opinion about his "performance" over the 2 games.

Emery had been quiet throughout the Brockport game (while the Brockport coach had been laying into the refs hard all game), and yet Emery gets a minor that night for questioning one call? Ridiculous... And made to look even more ridiculous by the fact that Emery was in Maciejewski's face all night against Geneseo... Coach Coppola appeared to be physically restraining him at one point when Emery was getting a little too close to the visor with his rapidly-moving index finger... Clearly, Emery was not mad at all

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

It really is staggering just how badly he botched the weekend. The shame of it is that Prim is solid and Joel Dupree is the class of the division; subtract Maciejewski and you get two perfectly good three-man crews.

Meteorology - {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/1/2015}

For the second straight night, the Cardinals spent the third period frequenting the penalty box.
This time it cost them.

Geneseo scored two power-play goals in the final period to beat Plattsburgh State 3-2 in a SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey game Saturday at Stafford Ice Arena.

The Cardinals were assessed six penalties totaling 23 minutes in the third period. They entered the weekend averaging 4.4 infractions per game and were called for 22 over two games.

While Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery stopped short of criticizing the officials — he said he would comment on the officiating “at the proper time to the right people” — he did express frustration about the game.
“In my 28 years, I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” he said. “I just feel bad for the kids in the locker room. Not to take anything away from Geneseo, but that’s not what college hockey’s all about
.”
Geneseo (9-8-3, 6-5 SUNYAC) drew numerous whistles as well, making eight trips to the sin bin.

At one point in the second period, being short-handed seemed to work to Plattsburgh’s favor. While Geneseo had a 5-on-3 advantage, Michael Cassidy pounced on a loose puck, skated in on a breakaway and buried it for a 2-0 cushion.
Ryan Donnelly put the Knights within one when he redirected the puck into the left side of the net at 14:05.

Geneseo capitalized on its next two-man advantage, with David Ripple getting a goal from down low to knot the score 3:16 into the third.

It’s unusual to play in this building and get a lot of power plays,” Geneseo coach Chris Schultz said. “We just had to take advantage of them when we did, especially with the 5-on-3 that we had. I think our guys did a good job on the first 5-on-3 (in the third period), capitalizing on the opportunity.”

While Geneseo’s Jack Ceglarski was sitting out a five-minute boarding major, the eighth-ranked Cardinals took two more penalties, putting them back on the kill.

Trevor Hills banged the puck past a diving Brady Rouleau at 10:22 to give Geneseo its first lead.

The Knights held off the Cardinals (14-5-1, 10-2) the rest of the way, including when Plattsburgh’s net was empty for the final 1:32.

Rouleau finished the game with 28 saves, and Nick Horrigan earned the win by stopping 26 shots.

I thought we came out flat in the first period. I don’t know why,” Emery said. “I thought we had a pretty good second period.

And the third, couldn’t get anything going. It was hard to get any momentum the way the game was going.

In spite of what Emery thought was a slow start, the Cardinals took an early lead. Shortly after a pregame ceremony recognizing him and six other seniors, Brandon Beadow ripped a shot from the right circle past Horrigan.

The Knights, who were coming off a 1-0 loss to Potsdam on Friday, thought they played a strong period despite the deficit.

We really liked the way we were playing. We came in after the first period and said. ‘Let’s just make sure we’re disciplined and keep playing the way we’re playing,’” Schultz said. “That’s how we played all year. We’re just having trouble scoring goals this year.

“So it was nice to pop three in here. It’s a great momentum-builder for the team.”
Plattsburgh has five road games left, four of them against SUNYAC opponents.

Middlebury beat Plattsburgh - and I gave them credit for doing so - Geneseo played hard and did nothing wrong (other than a few common/incidental things), but they were the benefactors of incredibly BAD officiating by Paul Maciejewski, if it seriously is a "a great momentum-builder for the team", it better be from the 2 points given them in the SUNYAC standings and not from any great performance on the ice.

I have seen some really bad officiating over my 28+ years of watching the Cardinals. And even the best refs blow a call now and then, but ( and I can hardly believe I'm saying this) even Mike St.Louis looks pretty good in comparison with official # 28. This game had the most unfair, uneven, inconsistient, biased calls of them all. Would the Cards have lost the game anyway? Perhaps, but to,lose it to a bad official is the worst ever.

Nuff said.

I'm sure nobody out there is feeling sorry for the Cardinals. I can respect that. Some maybe even snickering. That's OK too. I'm not sure if this Maciejewski will ever ref in D3 hockey again, but if he does be prepared. He had the appearance of somebody with a vendetta. I don't say that without thought. He looked like someone who had a personal interest in making sure Plattsburgh had little chance to win a game fair and square. A disgrace.

I was sitting right behind the Cardinal bench in Section M. I have never in my life seen an official with a smirk on his face like he had whenever he called a penalty on Plattsburgh. When he skated away he was laughing. A real professional. That being said....the Cards put themselves out there for the taking. Although leading 1-0 after the first, Genny totally outskated them, outshot them, and beat them to loose pucks most of the time. They picked it up in the first half of the second, but from then on it was even with Genny getting the upper hand with all the Cardinal penalties, a few warranted....most not so much. You cannot get anything going when you spend most of time skating a man or two down. The game was taken away from the players on the ice!

I totally agree. This was so unjust. I feel that the team was robbed of the opportunity to win this game in the third period if it weren't for the unprofessional actions of the above official. I do feel sorry for the team. Now it is going to be a tough road ahead for the Birds but I wish them the best of luck. Aim high, BIRDS! YOU CAN SOAR!

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

I am willing to bet Coach Emery spent all day breaking down game film and is sending clips to the Director of Officials.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Plattsburgh averaged 9 minutes per game in penalties coming in to this weekend. Then Paul Maciejewski refereed both of our weekend games. Cards were whistled for 13 penalties good for 37 minutes......in the two third periods alone !!! Their opponents scored 6 goals with 5 coming on the power play. Did the Cards suddenly become a dirty, undisciplined team?

My thoughts are the right people were watching the game on Saturday and we won't be seeing him around ANY game for a long time. It's too bad that someone like this is allowed to sabotage any chance of an at-large NCAA bid as well as probably costing the Cardinals first place and home ice in the SUNYAC playoffs. A costly bit of incompetence.

The nice thing is, there is video - the right people WILL BE watching the game.

There was someone at Saturday's game that evaluates officials. He wasn't at Friday's game, but he was definitely there Saturday.

From what was said post game, it was Mark Gilligan (father of Canton coach Trevor Gilligan) who is one of the heads of reffing....

PSUChamps2001 wondering how you would rate the top 10 teams in the East this year. Come tournament time is appears that 6-10 teams are all capable of beating each other. If I was going to pick a top team it would be Oswego but they have stumbled at times. You got Babson, UMB, Norwich, Amherst, Williams, Trinity, Plattsburgh, Oswego, and I can not even guess how to slop the ECAC West. Do you have an opinion and living in NY you may have seen more of the ECAC West teams.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Pool B is going to the WIAC and possibly one of the Pool C's. Who is getting the second Pool C slot?

Pool B to the WIAC for sure, but the Pool C? Lots of competition for that one.... there are a couple of teams in the NCHA and the ECAC East that will be looking for those. There are a lot of three and four loss teams out there right now, plus the usual conference tourney upsets.

I've seen Hobart a handful of times, Elmira a couple, and Utica once. Have yet to see Naz, Neumann and Manhattanville live in person yet. Not sold on any of them as a "contender". Could they? Sure. Anyone can get hot, but after last weekend the whole league became eligible for a Pool C bid. Pool C for C-You next year. I would put most of the league in the "don't want to see come NCAA time" along with several others from different leagues.

As far as top 10, I don't think there are clear "Top 10" teams....but....
1a. Oswego is playing great, now. Can they continue or are they peaking at the wrong time? Playing much better as a team, and the offense is clicking. Unless Z-Man goes down with an injury or goes into a funk they will be tough. The loss to SNHU? Big deal. If they were out played by them I'd be worried. **** happens, goalies get hot.
1b. Norwich. If the good Norwich shows up, they are difficult to beat. Plain and simple. Their last 4 games, 4-0, 21gf-3ga, granted against mediocre at best teams.

While I have these at 1a 1b, I think anyone in the top 10 can beat these two teams on any given night and it NOT be considered a "major" upset.

2a. Trinity. Potential What Middlebury/Williams team will show up this weekend? Then the Maine pair at home the following. I don't want to put them here from their one game I saw them play against Hobart they were VERY unimpressive. But their stats are what they are, and that's what matters come selection time.
2b. Babson. Where has Murray gone? 2-4-2 in their last 8 vs DIII teams. 8 goals in their first 11 games, 26 in the last 10. Houston we have a problem. Not sure I really want them this high, but when Murray and the Babson defense is playing well, they win.
2c. Plattsburgh. I realize hockey is a team sport. I wont even speak about the Geneseo game. It's a loss, but not a deserving loss. 2nd, while I am not a Brady Rouleau "hater", Plattsburgh has 5 loses, all credited to Brady Rouleau record. I don't doubt his talent, but he went through a stretch where even a Tom Brady deflated football could have found the back of the net. Until Finney is healthy (if) Plattsburgh will go from the 1st tier group (OSU, NOR) to the 2nd tier group.
2d. Amherst. A hiccup game against Conn College and Amherst is 7-1-2 in the last 10 games. Don't sleep on Amherst.

3. UMass-Boston. Not impressed. Pathetic NC schedule. Struggling beating teams they shouldn't have an issue beating. Norwich and Oswego on average bury those said teams. UMB is needing come from behinds and OT's on a regular basis. (and no I'm not going with the "the ECAC East is a deep league", yea and passing the ball on the 1 yard line with Lynch in the backfield was the right decision)
3. Williams. They beat Plattsburgh, congrats. A game in which (as was previously mentioned) they were outshot 3:1. Just because you win, doesn't mean you're a great/better team. I was very unimpressed with Williams, they just finished on a goalie who was auditioning for the new Marvel Super Here, the Invincible Man..
3. Nichols. If this team wins the Northeast, I don't want to see them. Probably not a contender, but could be a spoiler for sure.
3. Geneseo. Obviously the SUNYAC auto bid is the only chance they have at getting in, but for that reason (and why I don't have any ECAC West teams in) they are still there. WHEN the Geneseo varsity teams shows up, they can compete and win (at Oswego, at Plattsburgh, Ties at Adrian), but when the JV team steps on the ice (swept by Potsdam, loss to Cortland) you get the .500 Geneseo team. Probably one of the more dangerous .500ish teams left out there

So there...there are 10 teams....

As far as Pool C goes. Unless Adrian gets upset in the tourney (sorry SNC, No Jake No Date) its a 1 bid league (baring Lake Forrest doesn't sweep Adrian which would be close to putting Adrian out of Pool C contention). The WIAC will get a Pool B, but does UWSP or UWRF Thunder Chickens going to get a pool C with at least 1 more loss to their resume on top of loses come post season? Not a guarantee in my mind. Oswego, Norwich are probably the only 2 who are a lock right now. SNC is close if they can go at least 4-1...but that's a huge hit....
