Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

there should be video. some people complain about the quality of the video, but it's hard to complain when it's free video...

Is it high enough quality that I can blow up the picture onto a 45-inch HDTV without it looking like crap?

I know parents of one of our girls players that put it on their big screen tv when they can't make it up for the games.... not sure how great it comes out, but it's gotta be better than not being able to watch it at all....

The feed is also shown on Charter Plattsburgh local cable channel 17 (PSTV) and while I personally haven't seen it, I know people who were in CVPH (hospital) and did and said the feed was great. Not 100% certain Charter is pulling it off the internet feed, but I suspect they are.

Hey Norm, the Saturday night game was live but it was the college student broadcasters, not the NSN broadcster. Not sure if it was the same video feed or not.

Heard it was a great feed, if that is the case, maybe (next year) NSN will go bye-bye and they can push the PSTV feed

Oswego's Senior Class (through past wknd) 93-15-2 overall (6-2-1 vs Platty) and 4-3 in NCAA tournament. Platty is 74-25-10 overall during same period... Yes - we have high expectations for them and they for themselves and there will be sadness if they are unable to win the last game of the season - but if they fall short, it would be hard to characterize this class and this team as a disappointment, especially when compared to their peers...IMHO

Highly dissagree. A senior class with a. 854 winning %, * 4 SUNYAC Regular Season titles, * 4 trips to the Final Four, ranked in the top 5 every year, with some of the most talented players in recent years...

Yet are just 3 for 12 in Tournament (and thats being generous calling this years Pathfinder a tournament Lawrence and Plym St)

While most teams would LOVE having a .800+ winning % , this isn't just "most" teams. And with just two Pathfinder trophies and 1 SUNYAC Championship after all that, id say dissapointment.

As far as Admirals post, at first I was with the Oswego fans going "are you nuts?" However (you knew there had to be a but).......

No one is going to argue Oswegos top line of Moodie, Whitelaw and Rodder, but you have to keep in mind a few things...

Oswego has had 16 players play in 83% of their games
Plattsburgh has had 10.

Oswego has had 10 players play in all 23 games
Plattsburgh has had 1

Oswegos 2, 3, and 4th lines have a combined pts/game of 0.61
Plattsburghs 2, 3 , and 4th lines 0.77

You are also dealing with a Plattsburgh team who's started more freshman per game then any other Top 15 team (besides UMB). They also have the second most average games played by their freshman class. 11 of the 12 freshman have played in over 75% of Plattsburghs games this season. That's a lot of playing time for a lot of good young players. I would put Plattsburghs 5th line up against 95% of DIII 2nd line, and this is all with Nick Jensen playing defense.

Im not sure id agree Geneseo > Oswego tho.

The defense, much better then in years past but if you come at Oswego (which very few teams can) they show flaws. Oswego spends a lot of time (when playing A-game) in the offensive zone. When the tables are turned their defense can get out of place and if forchecked hard will give up the puck.

Goaltending.....ill go push this year. Chewy has just given up to many soft goals this year.

Special teams...Oswegos 5th place PP unit is impressive...but as impressive as Plattsburghs 2nd place PK which has given up just 8 PP goals but yet scored 7 SH goals while being the least penalized team in DIII. I understand Cortland and Ply State have scored 9 but they've also taken 20+ more penalties). Plattsburgh has averaged a SH goal every third game....got on in the Geneseo game (skip Brockport, skip Cortland) could we see #8 vs. Oswego and the 2nd of the Lakers then 4 SHG against....??

Plattsbutghs PP isn't great (18th - 21.8%) but Oswego's PP isn't eye popping (for the amount of goals they've scored) at 13th - 85.9%. Oswego also averages almost 4 more minutes in the box.

I'll go out on a limb and predict that Oswego will start a lot more freshmen next year!! :p

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Now that the playing field has been leveled with respect to student aid for Canadians, it probably will come down to coaching. I like our chances in that area.

A lot of what you're saying isn't arguments for why Plattsburgh is better, but arguments for why it's ok that Plattsburgh isn't. Yes, Platty is a younger team with a lot of potential with some really great freshmen and sophomores. You can argue that Platty's bench is deeper than Oswego, and you have some decent points, but this isn't translating into wins for Platty when it really counts. Who cares if Oswego or Platty has the deeper bench? It only matters if it translates into wins. Even if you're right that Oswego only has one goal-scoring line (which you're wrong about, check out the second line with the three chrises) it seems to be working for Oswego. It's a valid strategy for building a team and for Oswego it's been working very well this year. Your points about how many Oswego players have played in every game is also irrelevant. Oswego has a very small team this year (24 gentlemen on the roster), so each person on the team is bound to play more often. It's notable that when Oswego won the d3 championship in '07 they had exactly 24 players on the roster.

Also, if you doubt the depth of Oswego's bench, look back to the first game of the year against Genny, where 'wego scored 10 goals from 10 different goal-scorers. That Genny team defeated Platty just one week afterwards.

You can argue that Oswego's defense isn't as good as Platty's if you want, but the avg for the two teams are 1.74 and 1.78 goals per game. Those are almost identical. And if Oswego's defense is so easy to defeat, how was Platty only able to score two goals against it? And one of those goals was a short-handed breakaway that didn't even involve Oswego's defense.

The one point you give up on, goaltending, is the one area where Platty might actually have an advantage over Oswego. Hare has had more shutouts than Chewy, but Chewy's save percentage and GAA is almost identical to Hare's. Chewy's performance playing against Oswego was unbelievably phenomenal as well, one goal on 35 shots. He's pretty much the biggest highlight of the Plattsburgh team in my opinion.

If you want to compare special teams you'll note that Platty's PK is 4% better than Oswego's while Oswego's PP is 5% better than Platty's. Overall, I'd call that a tie. As for penalty minutes per game, both Oswego and Plattsburgh have phenomenally low numbers there. Sure Platty's is lower, but remember at the last Oswego-Platty game Plattsburgh actually received more penalties than Oswego.

In the end, you can tear apart different aspects of the teams to try to figure out which one is 'better', but when it really counts is in the win column. Oswego's managed 20 wins, while Platty's only had 16. It's very possible that Platty won't hit the 20 mark this season.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

The difference, if any, between these two teams is that Oswego tends to clobber inferior competition with big numbers (which inflates some of those stats). The Cards are more apt to beat Brockport 3-1 where Oswego might lay a six-spot on them. It also speaks to the nature of the two program's. Emery's battle cry has always been "defense first". I don't think Eddie is nearly as concerned instead choosing to outgun virtually anybody.
For whatever reason, I don't fear this Oswego team like I did a couple of year's ago. Guys like Boots, Kelly, etc. gave the team more depth and grit. That and the fact that the Cards made a switch in goal replacing Leis with Cadieux. Leis simply did not play well against Oswego. I can recall a couple of those games where the Lakers were outplayed from soup to nuts and still won.

As I make all these observations something occured to me. I somehow wouldn't be surprised to see them come here and put on a clinic!!

And Fox plays for Plattsburgh now ;)

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

I am hoping for a well played game by both teams that is decided by the players on the ice, not the timekeeper, the goal judge or the zebras...looking forward to seeing the vastly underrated and greatly improved PSTV...Go Lakers...Go Cards...Go Student Media! (OK...Go Lakers....for real)

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

A lot of what you're saying isn't arguments for why Plattsburgh is better, but arguments for why it's ok that Plattsburgh isn't.

No, the quote was that after the first line "they are a very ordinary team and not as deep as Plattsburgh or Geneseo up front". Proven by avg point per game (as ill explain later why point per game ****#1).

Hey you got one.

Boy IDK 2nd in the SUNYAC with still a chance at first with one of the youngest Cardinal teams ever that's only got better and better as the seasons gone on. And we all know Oswegos track record compared to Plattsburghs in games that COUNT....but go on....

Ummm that was the whole original question/point ....

And I did check out the second line....and while a tad better, Plattsburghs 3rd and 4th lines are night and day better then Oswego's.....next

**#1 No its not. Its very relevant. Plattsburgh has been juggling lines all season. Guys in and out of the line up players can not get into a groove. That's huge. More games = More points. Thus giving them much LARGER numbers. Hense the reason i used avg. points per game. Still with me here?

TOTO said:

Gentlemen? Are we going to have tea time too? Talk about irrelevant....2007 and number of players? Umm okay? I wonder why they only have 24 players hmmmm not enough aid to give out...opps did I say that?!?!? A coach going into a season with over a dozen seniors should have had a few more recruits...hmmmm

TOTO said:

It was actually two weeks buts who's counting.....and yes that same Platty team who went on to BEAT Oswego TWO weeks later. (see I check my stats before I spew).

And Oswego scored one...whats your point?? No one said Oswegos defense was dirt poor, but when teams come at them a-la Utica/Plattsburgh they cough up mistakes.

Of which the breakaway...nothing to do with the defense? McConney plays what? Oh thats right defense. GO FIGURE! Brenton pressed the high point, McConney couldn't handle the pass and pressure and coughed it up....NEXT!

I was trying to be nice. No not really. I think Hare is a decent goaltender, and does bail his team out. Tho the missplay during the Morrisville game was not good. He's not Marty B. Carr has taken a small step back this year.

And with out a doubt its been more thr play of the freshmen as the bright spot. What Plattsburgh is doing with 11/12 regular freshman and a banged up defense is pretty impressive.

No actually it was tied thanks to the cheap shot at the end of the game and the missed hit from behind/boarding :10 seconds into the game on Grace which knocked him out for a period and could have been longer. Plattsburgh was also missing 3 defensive starters that night and scrambled putting Nick Jensen on D for his first time EVER.

And its very possible that Oswego will go home with nothing but another dissapointing season with no hardware WHEN IT COUNTS......AGAIN.....see at Plattsburgh we worry more about Championships then some regular season wins. Plattsburgh wins when it counts....Oswego....not so much....

Game. Set. Match.

Heard it was a great feed, if that is the case, maybe (next year) NSN will go bye-bye and they can push the PSTV feed

My brother is the producer for cardinal hockey on PSTV. He started to do the games live and would like to get it on the Internet. But the college doesn't have the right equipment. The frustrating part for him is that the college is paying nsn a bunch of money to broadcast the sporting events on the Internet. Why couldn't the college by new equipment for the students for them to be able to broadcast live online instead of paying nsn. It's good for the students and gives them more experience and allows them to LEARN.
