Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Fellow Platty fans, what is your take on the following tweet I saw today:

Tired of teams playing US & Canada Anthems. Why? We are in the US. When I go to Canada they don't play the US anthem. Should (Plattsburgh) play Sweden, Canada & the US national anthems?

Fellow Platty fans, what is your take on the following tweet I saw today:

I saw this as well, and at first, thought it was slightly bizarre. However, I can understand where they are coming from. I think eventually, someone who feels strongly about this is going to do something about it. I personally don't care that much.

I think it's a sign of respect and I appreciate schools that do both given they have student athletes from both countries. I'm one of the biggest patriotic people you'll find when it comes to hockey and when it's international hockey for me I'm backing old glory and to heck with everybody else.

However, international hockey only happens a couple times a year and Norwich plays around 30 home games between the men and the women a year. I can survive a 1:30 minute rendition of Oh Canada, especially when Paula Gills is singing. I also happen to like Canada's anthem.

It seems like a pretty trivial thing to me to get upset about if people actually do.

I always thought that the idea of playing the Canadian National Anthem was to honor the country that originated the sport. I think it is kind of cool. Of course they wouldn't play the U. S. National anthem in a game in Canada involving Canadian Teams. That would be silly.

The routine playing of the National Anthem before sporting events in the U. S. didn't really start until WWII. It's first appearance seems to have come during the 7th inning stretch of game 5 of the 1918 World Series (See ESPN.com for details), and it was then played by bands at "big event" (Patriotic Holiday, World Series) baseball games by a band, but the playing of the national anthem before every game over the PA system didn't really happen until WWII patriotism took over.

I do not mind hearing both anthems sung. Norwich is very fortunate to have Paula Gills. It also enjoy seeing the Cadets stand perfectly still during the singing of both anthems. Most of the times the opposing players are moving around like they need to find the little boys room. There was one other team this year which stood very still and it may have been St Thomas at the Prime-Link. I was curious to see what Neumann would do last weekend at Norwich considering Couch Dawes is a Norwich 2004 Alum.

Playing both the US and Canada anthems is just a show of respect for the players. Canada and the US have always been good friends but after traveling a lot in Canada the last few years it seems that the country's are even closer now. Maybe its a tech thing and Canada generally has been more supportive of US Policy. I have quite a few friends who have duel citizenship because one spouce is from Canada and the other US. I am also a US military veteran and have not problem with playing both.

I hadn't thought of that before...but, following that line, wouldn't Canadian Teams playing baseball in Canada then play the US national anthem to honor the country that originated that sport? NCAA rules state US National Anthem, just leave it at that!

Don't know about minor league or college baseball in Canada, but I do know that the (late, lamented) Expos used to play both anthems, and I think the Blue Jays do.

Oswego plays both - given the team roster and program history, it would be disrespectful NOT to play the Canadian anthem IMHO...

Cardinals refocus on defense {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/11/2013}

Coach Bob Emery said the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team needs to get back to its bread and butter: tough defense.

The 10th-ranked Cardinals are 2-2 since returning from the semester break, and Emery said they played poor defense in their two losses.

They host Middlebury and Williams this weekend for the last two nonconference games on their schedule.

The Cardinals (9-5-1) started the year with an increased focus on goal scoring, but Emery stipulated that it couldn’t be at the expense of defense. Lately, he said, the defense has lapsed. He thought they played poorly in their own end in a 3-2 loss to Amherst in the Cardinal Classic, and then they allowed a season-high five goals while falling to Castleton last Saturday.

So this first semester our forwards did not do a good job creating turnovers, finishing checks, playing physical. So I mentioned that a lot, I taught that a lot and preached it a lot,” Emery said. “And I think our defense thought, ‘OK, we’re the bomb back here. We don’t need to play defense anymore. It’s our forwards that are the reason why we’re not being good.’

“Bang. Two games later, it’s our defense. So I think, you know, it’s a focus problem
.”

The season has been an up-and-down one for Plattsburgh. The team started the season with two weekend sweeps, and it hasn’t had a four-point weekend since. The Cardinals split their last two weekends.

“It’s hard to put a finger on our lack of success, if you will, of our season,” Emery said. “I think our season started off maybe too easy for us. All our games were at home. We didn’t have any real tough opponents outside of Oswego. So I think it gave us a false sense of hope that we might have been better than we were.

“Coach (Steve) Moffat has done really a lot of work watching video with players this week. We’re trying to find the answers to the problems.”

Plattsburgh met Middlebury already this season, dropping a 3-2 game in the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout. The Panthers (5-6-2) have suffered six losses since then, including a 3-1 setback against Norwich on Tuesday, and have fallen out of the USCHO.com Division III Men’s Poll.

Louis Belisle and Derek Pimentel lead the team with 11 points each. Nick BonDurant has been in goal for eight games this season, but the Panthers have also used three other netminders. Liam Moorfield-Yee, a freshman, played the last two games.

“Against Middlebury, we gotta watch out for their stretch guy — the guy trying to get behind our defense,” Emery said. “Cost us two goals last time we played them on two bad changeups in the second period.

That’s going to be the focus. Defense first, doing the little things, possess the puck and try to take advantage of scoring chances when we have them. But it’s gotta be defense first. You cannot beat a good hockey team without playing defense.”

No. 13 Williams (7-2-1) tied Trinity and beat Wesleyan last weekend. The Ephs are 5-0-1 in their last six games.

Fast start propels Plattsburgh State over Middlebury {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/12/2013}

Bill Beaney couldn’t tell if his Middlebury Panthers were ready for game time or tea time at the start of Friday’s contest at Stafford Ice Arena. Middlebury fell behind in the opening minute and never caught up as Plattsburgh State skated off with a 7-1 win in nonconference men’s hockey. “They came to play, and we were wondering if it was Friday or if it was Monday afternoon tea, I’m not sure,” Beaney said. “We weren’t into it and you could tell.” Michael Cassidy earned five points for the 10th-ranked Cardinals, and Max Balaban had two goals and an assist. Plattsburgh outshot Middlebury 43-19, and Mathieu Cadieux picked up the victory with 18 saves. “I thought we did a good job getting pucks in deep and finishing checks,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “We’ve been trying to force our guys to play more physical, and I thought we played really physical (Friday) and I think it showed. Playing physical causes the other team to rush a lot and turn pucks over.” The Cardinals (10-5-1) host No. 13 Williams tonight. Plattsburgh led almost from the get-go Friday. Mark Constantine scooped up a loose puck in front of the net and flipped it over Middlebury goalie Liam Moorfield-Yee's left shoulder 36 seconds in. The puck was coughed up a couple more times in front of the Panthers' net, and Beaney called a timeout at 6:53. Shortly afterward, Andrew Smith fired a shot from the left side with Moorfield-Yee tangled up in front of the crease. Moorfield-Yee jabbed his stick at the puck but couldn't keep it out of the net. He was pulled in favor of Nick BonDurant. Late in the period, Middlebury (5-7-2) got within one when Evan Neugold's low shot from the high slot found the net during a power play. The Cardinals pulled way in the second. Cassidy banged in a goal from the left side 3:27 in to give them a 3-1 cushion. Then Balaban skated in and unleashed a high shot for his first career goal, and Jared Docking tallied the third goal of the period when he went top shelf on a short-handed breakaway. “I think we just kept the energy going, honestly,” Balaban said of the second period. “We definitely did a better job getting pucks out and pucks deep. Still a few turnovers and stuff, but I think it was just we kept the energy going and they couldn’t keep up with us. We kept the puck below their goal line, and they couldn’t get anything on us.” Balaban potted his second of the night in the final period, and Preston Kaye scored a power-play marker with 1:26 left. Kaye finished with two points, and Michael Radisa and Barry Roytman both had two assists. “I thought Plattsburgh was real sharp (Friday),” Beaney said. “That’s as sharp as I’ve seen them play in a long time. They were alert; they were moving pucks, winning pucks. I think they played solid in all aspects (Friday).” Middlebury used three goaltenders, with Moorfield-Yee taking the loss. Plattsburgh's Nick Jensen, normally a forward, skated on the blueline Friday. Emery has been unhappy with the team’s defensive play lately and said he made the move to send a message to the defensemen. “I thought defensively we really owned the paint in our end. And I thought the shots that they had 5-on-5, especially, were outside the paint, and I thought that was really good for us,” Emery said. “I thought our goalie was great. It’s not the seven goals that won the game for us (Friday), it was the one goal against that won the game for us.” — Plattsburgh 7, Middlebury 1 Middlebury 1 0 0 — 1 Plattsburgh 2 3 2 — 2 First period- 1, PSU, Constantine (Fox, Farnan), 0:36. 2, PSU, Smith (Kaye, Roytman), 8:36 (pp). 3, Midd, Neugold (Belisle), 18:09 (pp). Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Sitting in the Day's Inn watching Norwich - Babson (and football) waiting for the Williams - Plattsburgh game. Don't know if there's a pass list for the game, and, from reading the Platty web page, it appears that I can't buy tickets until 6:30, if there's not. Waiting from a txt from son.

Think I'll have a problem?

I was watching (a) Salem get handled by Fitchburg then (b) Norwich getting handled by Babson.

I'll be wearing a black jacket over a Clarkson sweatshirt sitting in the Williams section (next to the exploding scoreboard???)
