Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

The reason the Cardinals tried so many rushes with the puck was that Norwich chose to not forecheck AT ALL !! It was a defensive scheme that McShane uses from time to time and the only way to try to make something happen is to carry it and try to make a play. The offside Norwich defenseman was cheating back to get a jump on any dump-in.

This is standard Emery after a loss. It can be great psychology or it can be really disheartening, depending on the makeup of the team. If there's a bunch of players who felt that they worked their a**es off, not giving them some props could really cause them to be discouraged. If they are a pugnacious bunch, they may get angry and work even harder. You have to know your group. When I was teaching, if a class had a poor exam, it was the same question - do you say, "wow that was a lot tougher than I thought it would be, and you made a good effort and didn't quite get it," or "you really blew it - you need to work harder, because I know if you had you would have gotten better grades." You have to know your audience - I assume Bob does. As I said before, there was very little to be ashamed of that I could see.

Yes, Plattsburgh probably tried too many end-to-end one man efforts, but that's kind of a product of playing on that short ice surface. I know that there were architectural and infrastructure problems in adding another 15' to the ice surface, but I think that playing so many games on a short rink leads to some bad habits against teams that are used to a full length rink.
and man that is a BIG rink if they get to Placid

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Plattsburgh has built their teams since Middlebury came into the NCAA to play on the bigger ice surface. Smaller and faster players who know how to use open ice. As Bob says, its much easier to play on a smaller ice surface where things happen quicker and then go to the bigger ice and have more room then the reverse. Teams on the big ice are use to having the extra time (for the most part) to make a pass or skate out. When you shrink the ice, those players now have to make quicker decisions. Some can adapt, some can not. Bob conditions his teams to play on bigger ice, so running out of gas is not "normally" an issue.

Plattsburgh has done pretty well on the nearby bigger surfaces at Norwich. Middlebury and Skidmore, as well as Lake Placid. Ice size doesn;t seem to be an issue for them.

What constitutes "well"?

Looking back at the numbers, Norwich has fared extremely well against Plattsburgh at Kreitzberg. On the flip side, Plattsburgh has done very well against Norwich at the Stafford historically.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

If my math serves me right, not counting neutral sites

Plattsburgh vs Middlebury (since 1994-1995)
HOME: 6-4-2
AWAY: 4-10-2 (3 OF THOSE WINS ARE NCAA GAMES) last year was Plattsburghs first Regular Season away win vs Middlebury

Plattsburgh vs Norwich (since 1994-1995)
HOME: 8-4-1
AWAY: 1-10-3
The lone win was in 2007-2008. I may have missed one but it was a quick look

IMO, the Cards have generally PLAYED well. With these three (PSU, MC and NU) generally being very closely matched, being at home (not home ice size necessarily) could be what makes the difference.

Well since Plattsburgh has been to 23 straight SUNYAC championships I would consider most nights that they hit the ice, home or away they are usually going to be competitive no matter where they are playing.

Irregardless of ice size, which was my original point in the response.

That is why we had all those bomb drills in elementary school when I was a kid (1960's or there about). We would evacuate the school and walk to the College (yes, PSUC but much smaller then) and go into the bomb shelter. Scary times, glad I was less aware of it then.
When I was a kid when we had air raid drills we went out in the hall, sat down and put our head between our knees! That was really going to help. I think it was so you wouldn't see what was going to happen.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Do you think we should all go out in the hall and put our heads between our knees on 12/21/12 ??? Isn't that the "new doomsday" ??

When I was kid, we hid under the desks for air raid drills.

Oh we did the under the desk thing at times as well, I guess it depended what kind of "fallout" was expected!! We also had go home drills as well where you were to go directly home and stay inside until 4:00pm. All the fire whistles were blowing in both villages where I grew up near Fort Drum. (Carthage and West Carthage, NY separated by the Black River)

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

We did hide under the desk and go out into the halls and cover our heads while leaning against the wall. Our school was a designated fallout shelter, but I never saw the shelter. :)
