Word has it that the Cards are dealing with some illness going in to the Classic. Look for some regulars to be out this weekend.

Why not? Everyone else in Clinton County has been sick in the last three weeks? Also, if you are going to the games tonight, there is high school basketball at the fieldhouse today that started at 11:30 am, with the last game scheduled to tip off at 7:00 pm.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

So as someone who's seen these offensively challenged teams all four years and now my first year as an alumni, when was the last time they had an offense that fired on all cylinders? I mean I realize it's a defense-first system so they're not going to be that team that can drop like 5 goals every game bu

I can't answer the historical questions, but that had to be a frustrating game to watch if you are a cardinals fan. Until they pulled their goalie, they really didn't have many quality scoring chances. Amherst is good defensively, but there really wasn't much puck support off the rush for plattsburgh, and when they did get pucks to the net they had no one driving for rebounds. Pretty easy night for the Amherst goaltender.

Eric Satim and Dylan Clarke were pretty darn good.

The last time Plattsburgh was dominant though was probably the 2008-09 team. That might go down as one of the best teams to not win the NCAA championship in Division III history.

08-09 season...Joey Wilson was tops that year. I feel like if I wasn't a freshman I would have appreciated watching that team more than I did at the time.

Late Rally Not Enough as Plattsburgh Falls to Amherst in Cardinal Classic Championship {Courtesy of Stephanie Dutton, Sports Information Director - SUNY Plattsburgh}

With less than three minutes to play in regulation, the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team lit the lamp twice in a span of 29 seconds, but the rally was too little, too late as the Cardinals suffered a 3-2 loss to Amherst in the championship game of the 2012 Buck Supply and Hynes Electric Cardinal Classic Tournament.

The nationally-ranked no. 11 Lord Jeffs (7-3-1, 4-2-0 NESCAC) held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal after a scoreless first period Amherst broke through in the second, scoring all three of its goals in the middle stanza.

Brain Safstrom opened the scoring at the 1:39 mark of the second, lifting Andrew Kurlandski’s rebound over the leg of Plattsburgh goaltender Mathieu Cadieux. Mike Rowbotham also picked up an assist on Safstrom’s third of the year.

With Amherst on the power-play, Jake Turrin’s shot from the point found the back of the net at 7:18 to give the Lord Jeffs a 2-0 lead. Nick Brunette and Rowbotham added assists on Turrin’s first of the season.

Late in the period Cadieux made the initial stop on a shot by Amherst’s Conor Brown but Johnny Van Siclen was able to jam home the loose puck to stretch the lead to 3-0.

The no. 8 Cardinals had the better of the opportunities in the third period, outshooting Amherst 11-5 through the final 20 minutes of play, but it wasn’t until the 17:51 mark that Plattsburgh State began to dig out of the hole.

Rich Botting picked up the puck in the neutral zone and carried the puck into the Cardinals’ offensive end before firing a shot that sailed just under the crossbar for his first collegiate goal, cutting the Amherst lead to 3-1.

With just under two minutes left in regulation, Plattsburgh State (8-4-1, 6-1-1 SUNYAC) pulled Cadieux for the extra-attacker and the Cardinals quickly seized the opportunity. Luke Baleshta threw the puck to the front of the net and the freshman forward caught a lucky break to bring Plattsburgh within one. Baleshta’s shot deflected off the inside of Amherst goaltender Nathan Corey’s skate and across the goal line with 1:40 left in regulation, giving the Cardinals a new life.

Plattsburgh was knocking at the door three times in the final minute of play but was unable to score the equalizer as Amherst held on to claim the Cardinal Classic title.

The Cardinals finished the evening with 28 shots-on-goal but was unable to convert on their five power-play opportunities. The Lord Jeffs had 21 shots and went 1-for-3 with the man-advantage.

Cadieux made 18 saves in the loss for Plattsburgh State. Corey turned away 26 shots in the Amherst victory.

Corey, Turrin and Aaron Deutsch represented Amherst on the Cardinal Classic All-Tournament Team. Plattsburgh’s Andrew Smith and Wesleyan’s Keith Buehler were all recognized. Amherst forward Johnny Van Siclen, who netted the game-winner, was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Plattsburgh State will look to get back on track Friday against Skidmore at 7 p.m. The non-conference matchup will be played at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Buehler Leads Wesleyan to 5-2 Victory in Cardinal Classic Consolation

Box Score

Two goals from junior forward Keith Buehler helped lead the Wesleyan Cardinals (5-4-1, 1-2-1 NESCAC) to a 5-2 win over Elmira College (5-8-0, 2-4-0 ECAC West) in the consolation game of the 2012 Buck Supply and Hynes Electric Cardinal Classic Tournament Saturday evening at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Jaren Taenaka’s lifted a backhanded shot over the left shoulder of Elmira goaltender Ryan deMelo at the 8:04 mark of the first period to give Wesleyan a 1-0 lead. John Guay and Jay Matthews were credited with assists on the goal.

The Soaring Eagles evened the score with just 1:28 gone in the middle period when Jesper Strale found Brian Depp perched to the side of the net and Depp tapped the puck inside the near post for his fifth of the year.

The Cardinals regained the lead at 9:43 of the second when Donald Kleckner knocked a rebound through the five-hole to make it 2-1 Wesleyan. Just shy of four minutes later, Buehler tallied his first of the afternoon on a tic-tac-toe setup by Nick Craven and Kleckner to push the Wesleyan lead to 3-1.

Elmira made it a one-goal game at 16:02 of the second when a diving Mark Morikawa found the back of the net to bring the score to 3-2.

Goals by Buehler and Guay in the final period allowed Wesleyan to pull away for the win and place third in the Cardinal Classic.

Wesleyan finished with a 37-26 edge in shots on goals. Both power-play units struggled as the Cardinals finished 1-for-5 and the Soaring Eagles went 0-for-5.

Nolan Daley made 24 stops, including 10 in the second period to secure the victory for the Cardinals. Elmira’s deMelo recorded 32 saves in the loss.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

2008-09 Cardinals were a powerhouse. Not too many teams can lose their 2nd game of the season in it's last game. It ranks up there with '86-87, '91-92 and '80-81 teams as the best they've had. The game has changed, of course, but those teams had big-time firepower with the likes of D'Anjou, the Ferras's, Piromalli, Steve Moore, Pereira, etc.etc... You don't see those types anymore at the DIII level. I also think the goaltending is better nowadays as well as the defensive systems.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

NESCAC teams go 3-1 for the weekend at the Cardinal Classic. Amherst taking out Plattsburgh in Plattsburgh is impressive and proves that last year's win in the NCAA quarters was a lot more than luck or a home rink advantage.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Who said it was luck or home ice advantage last year? Yes, NESCAC went 3-1 but 2 of those 3 came against a very weak Elmira team.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

no way was this a upset, these guys were in the FF last yr and have some good skaters from the game I watched l ast yr and the one from yesterday...someone posted Platty had some illnesses did they not have any of their top guys?? Yes this could be a matched up problem for the birds, but I dont think to many teams will " match up " to well with them there have game..ps they also seem to be well coached and dont give up the oddman rush..

I thought it was a pretty easy night for Plattsburgh's goaltender, too. He just didn't make the big save they needed to make that third period comeback meaningful. Also, I thought the Cards cylcled the puck really well, but other than drawing one penalty out of it, they didn't generate any offense with it. It was like Amherst was content to let Plattsburgh play with it in the corners, but was able to prevent it from developing into anything. To me, Amherst wasn't the best team Plattsburgh's seen all year, but they did nothing to beat themselves and Plattsburgh didn't do much to take it to them. They were opportunistic and definitely deserved to win the tournament.

It's starting to look like the Cards better win the SUNYAC. Losses to Amherst, Norwich, and Middlebury aren't going to help them come March...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

It's true that the Cards have their work cut out for them. But the schedule is favorable and they can roll up some wins. As always, it's a combination of your record.....and the record of those around you. For instance, if Amherst loses 2 or 3 games in NESCAC and then loses in the NESCAC tourney, their win vs. Plattsburgh wouldn't mean that much.

ECAC West will beat the tar out of each other in the coming weeks, so they may only get 1 team in. You have to take care of your business, but pay attention to those teams in the hunt as well. Sometimes a great regular season record won't do it. (see Oswego a few years ago). Lots of meaningful hockey left.

True, but it also matters who you lose to and Plattsbugh now has three losses to teams that will likely be ranked by the NCAA. That hurts....remember a few years ago when Plattsburgh had several losses, but none were to ranked teams. When it came NCAA time, Plattsburgh's record against ranked teams was superior in a year they struggled in SUNY. This year is starting to shape up the opposite.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

That's true indeed. Maybe Midd will drop out?? If not, we have another crack at them. It's unfortunate that the record vs. ranked opponents is askew. Card losses to Norwich, Amherst are treated like losses to #14 & $15 ranked teams. Seems unfair there's no weighting given to tougher ranked opponents. There is also no difference in beating Oswego than beating #15 ranked team???? As long as your ranked, it's all the same.

True, but losing to Morrisville woukd hurt less then the #15 ranked team.....

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

I just did a quick run down of comparisons of the top teams (adding in stats from conference leaders NOR, BOW, OSU, WNE, and PLY ST as they would be in with Pool A bids right now) and then did the next 11 teams based on polls, stats, ect.....:

AMHERST
BABSON
CASTLETON
GENESEO
HOBART
MANHATANVILLE
MIDDLEBURY
PLATTSBURGH
TRINITY
UTICA
WILLIAMS

Granted most teams have an average of 6 games vs ranked (based on my teams) and an average of 4 common opponents left so there is a lot of wiggle room. Plattsburgh also has games remaining with 3 of those pool B teams remaining which could swing things too, but with a. 200 RNK and a dipping WIN% these next 4 games are HUGE! The only teams Plattsburgh beats or ties in criteria right now is Geneseo and Manhatanville. While a Pool B bid is not out of the question just yet, the light is dimming.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

We have 4 games with Pool B contenders.....Williams, Midd, Castleton and Genny and need all 4.
