NESCAC will probably only get the AQ bid. There are 3 Pool C bids

One should go to the ECAC-W
One will go to the NCHA
The third one will NOT go to the ECAC-NE, MASCAC, MCHA, or MIAC.

I'll see you on the 12th. Since sonny boy has not deigned to give me any Williams swag, I will be wearing a Clarkson sweatshirt or a Salem St. hoodie under a black jacket.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Who said it was luck or home ice advantage last year? Yes, NESCAC went 3-1 but 2 of those 3 came against a very weak Elmira team.

Whoa!! Keep your shirt on there guy. My statement was made in the context that Amherst is a recent newcomer to the national scene and Plattsburgh in the NCAA's is par for the course. I could provide an obligatory "I'm sorry if I offended anyone" but that would be disingenuous. In fact, Amherst hardly had home-ice advantage last season as the home rink was filled with mostly Cardinal fans. As for luck, you are correct, there was none. I stand corrected.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Cards looked pretty sharp last night. Opportunistic for sure and some real crisp passing/scoring plays. Skidmore was outmatched from the get-go and a lot of trouble with D-zone coverage. Nice to see a couple of guys get their 1st career goal too !! (Fox, Popp). I'm sure Castleton is seething over blowing a three goal lead vs. Potsdam last night, so Cards had better bring "A" game to the Mall. These last 4 NC games are crucial and the competition gets tougher (Castleton, Middlebury, Williams). We will probably know if our NCAA chances are going to be winning the SUNYAC tourney or slipping in a Pool C over the next few games. Keep it up boys !!

Plattsburgh State gets offensive against Skidmore {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/5/2013}

GLENS FALLS — Plattsburgh State got its offense going early and kept it going throughout Friday’s game.

Jared Docking scored twice as the Cardinals beat Skidmore 7-1 in a nonconference men’s hockey game at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

I thought we were very opportunistic (Friday), something we haven’t been as of late,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “I don’t think the score was indicative of the game. Skidmore deserves a lot more credit than the final score. We had a lot of turnovers in the game, which they caused.”

The ninth-ranked Cardinals (9-4-1) visit Castleton tonight.

Docking netted the first two goals Friday, both on the power play, at 3:05 and 8:32 of the first period. Mark Constantine made it 3-0 at 13:49.

Plattsburgh’s Andrew Smith tallied early in the second before Tim Colvin put Skidmore (5-6-2) on the board. Jake Mooney added a goal late in the period for the Cardinals.

Dillan Fox scored in the middle of the third, and then Zach Popp recorded his first collegiate goal.

The Cardinals were coming off a loss to Amherst, which held them scoreless until the final minutes, but they found the net more easily Friday.

“Not to take anything away from Skidmore, but when you play good defensive teams, it’s hard to score those goals,” Emery said. “But I did like our passing in the offensive zone (Friday), and we did a good job finishing.”

Docking finished with three points, and Popp, Smith and Luke Baleshta all had two.

Mathieu Cadieux made 27 saves for the win. Skidmore’s Ben Freiberg had 31 saves.

After not finding much success on the power play recently, Plattsburgh finished 2-for-3 Friday.

“We tried to simplify the power play and just get pucks to the net,” Emery said

Plattsburgh prevails in college game at Civic Center

11 hours ago • By DIANA C. NEARHOS -- dnearhos@poststar.com

GLENS FALLS -- Back in the late summer, SUNY Plattsburgh had an idea to get its branch campus in Queensbury more involved in campus life: hold a hockey game at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

The Cardinals had a game scheduled at Skidmore College and asked the school if it would be interested in moving the game to the Civic Center. The Thoroughbreds were on board, and by September the plan was set.

Friday night was the first half of what was termed the Hockey Weekend in the Adirondacks, with the Adirondack Phantoms playing a home game Saturday to complete the weekend.

Plattsburgh came out firing, getting on the board three minutes into the game and went on to a 7-1 victory.

“You get out there and the building is a little bit bigger, so there’s more excitement. We love playing Plattsburgh, one of the best teams in the country and they push us to play better. So to play them here made it that much better,” Skidmore captain Brendan Cottam said.

Skidmore stayed with Plattsburgh, in terms of shots, through the first two periods, but struggled to get past Cardinal goaltender Mathieu Cadieux.

“It’s always fun to play in a place like this,” Skidmore head coach Neil Sinclair said. “We’ve played up in Lake Placid — that’s a special place for U.S. hockey. Coming up and playing in a venue like this is always fun for the young men and it gets you ready for championship hockey, when you’re going to be playing in a venue that’s similar to this.”

The Civic Center staff anticipated a crowd of about 500 and got an attendance of 871. Most of those fans wore Plattsburgh red, something that did not surprise Plattsburgh’s Jared Docking, who said the team has a “one-of-a-kind” fan base that follows the team everywhere.

Docking, who said Plattsburgh has struggled to get started recently, got the Cardinals going early, scoring the first two goals of the game at 3:05 and 8:32, both on power plays. The senior had been to the Civic Center once before, to see a Phantoms game three years ago.

“It’s good to get on ice level and it’s pretty noisy. It’s a special time,” Docking said.

Docking is not the only Cardinal to have experience at the Civic Center. Plattsburgh head coach Bob Emery played here in his AHL days.

“The only thing is, we didn’t win a lot here. The Adirondack Red Wings were terrific back then, I don’t think we ever won. It’s good to get a win here, it might be my first one ever,” Emery said.

“It’s a great rink, it’s a great atmosphere. The sound was good. Even though it wasn’t a huge crowd you could really hear them during the game. Glens Falls has something special in this rink.”

Plattsburgh (10-4-1) 3 2 2 – 7

Who is at tonight's game? What the heck is going on with the guys?

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Utica leading Oswego 6-0 in the 2nd...Oz has been in the box all night long after not taking a single penalty last night beating Elmira...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Might make the SUNYAC tournament quite interesting...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Without a good footing for a Pool C in either of Oz or Plattys back pocket it would be a little different than recent years...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Wow ! When's the last time Norwich, Oswego and Plattsburgh all lost on the same night??? I'd bet you would have to go back a long way (if ever). Cards just didn't match Castleton's early enthusiasm and never recovered. No idea what was going on with the pulling of Cadieux AND Leis in Card goal.

It doesn't make the rest of the schedule meaningless, but it sure makes the wiggle room non-existent for NCAA hopes. This is shaping up like a year where SUNYAC tourney champ is the only one that goes. (Maybe Oswego has one more loss to give). Plattsburgh has a way of recovering from these devastating losses, but the youth and inexperience may be showing a bit.

Hats off to Utica, Neumann and Castleton. Well done!!

In search of their identity - a work in progress ...

Castleton surprises Plattsburgh State men's hockey {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/6/2013}

RUTLAND — Castleton scored three goals in the second period on its way to defeating Plattsburgh State 5-2 in a nonconference men’s hockey game Saturday.

The Cardinals trailed 4-0 midway through the second period.

We were not focused in the Amherst game and the game (Saturday) on being a good defensive team,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “I’ve said this team is having a hard time finding its identity, and I think they still haven’t found it.

“We need better leadership, and we gotta get more guys who hate to lose
.”

Brett Zeggil gave Castleton a 2-0 cushion just 2:38 into the second period. When Dan Bell scored at 10:33, Plattsburgh starting goalie Mathieu Cadieux was replaced by Josh Leis. Cadieux had 10 saves on 13 shots.

I definitely don’t blame the loss on him,” Emery said. “I think we were giving up too many quality chances. Even though we won 7-1 (Friday against Skidmore), he made some great stops. I think we’re relying on him too much. And maybe he wasn’t quite as sharp (Saturday) as he has been.”

Leis lasted 32 seconds until Ryan Frost made it 4-0 and Sam Foley took over between the pipes.

Brandon Beadow tallied for the ninth-ranked Cardinals (9-5-1) with just under five minutes left in the period, and Kevin Emmerling scored in the third. But they couldn’t get any closer, and Bell added an empty-netter at the end.

We don’t handle adversity well,” Emery said. “When things are going bad, to turn the game back around and come from behind — we don’t handle it well. That’s something we need to work on.”

Gabriel Cromp netted the Spartans’ (8-5-2) first goal 9:43 into the game. Erick Cinotti posted the win with 25 saves.

Foley made 12 saves for Plattsburgh. Both teams had 27 shots on goal.

The Cardinals fell to 3-4 in nonconference games.

“They wanted it more than us. We didn’t deserve it (Saturday),” Emery said.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

It was a very tough game to watch as a Cardinal fan. Castleton played a super, physical game with such intensity, along with an "active" fan base. They deserved the win. I thought after watching the first period, perhaps things would settle down as they usually do. Not. They just kept coming and we couldn't match it. We had our moments when I thought the Cards would get back into it, but no cigar. I guess I have to agree with coach. Hope to see this young team get it together and give it their all to win some upcoming crucial games. Best of luck to the team.
