And the inevitable, yet unfortunate, follow-up to that article:
http://www.nytimes.com/1990/03/30/sports/plattsburgh-gets-probation.html[/QUOTE

Unfortunate indeed. That was so much ado about nothing. Nettles, Pete Rose and Jim Deshaies on the same page: good stuff!

Unfortunate yes. But we all have to play by the same rules. When one team breaks them, there are consequences. It sucks, yeah, but its the rules.

Five Cards make All-SUNYAC men's hockey teams {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/22/2013}

Jared Docking and Mathieu Cadieux led Plattsburgh State’s contingent on the men’s hockey 2012-13 SUNYAC All-Conference Teams.

Docking and Cadieux represented the Cardinals on the First Team, while Nick Jensen was elected to the Second Team. Kevin Emmerling and Mike Grace made the Third Team.

Oswego led the SUNY Athletic Conference with six players recognized.

In the midst of a career year, Docking earned his first All-SUNYAC nod. The senior forward is the Cardinals’ leading scorer and the only player on the roster to appear in all 25 games. The Toronto, Ontario native has set career-highs in all offensive categories this season with 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points. Docking has also been a key member of the Plattsburgh special teams, contributing a team-high five power-play goals and three short-handed goals.

Cadieux landed on the First Team for the second straight season with a 14-6-1 record overall and an 11-2-1 mark in league play. The junior goaltender out of Oshawa, Ontario has appeared in 22 games, allowing 37 goals and recording 483 saves. In 14 games against conference opponents, Cadieux led the league with a 1.43 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage. With a 1.75 goals-against average on the year, Cadieux ranks sixth in Division III.

After making a smooth mid-season transition from forward to defense, Jensen received All-SUNYAC recognition for the first time. His presence on the blue line has solidified the league’s best defense, which has held its opponents to 1.76 goals per game. Jensen, who hails from Helsingborg, Sweden, has appeared in 24 games and contributed six goals and nine assists.

Emmerling was the only freshman to be honored on this year’s All-SUNYAC Teams. The forward from Northbridge, Mass. has highlighted a strong freshman class for the Cardinals. Emmerling finished the regular season with a team-high 14 goals and ranks third in team scoring with 24 points. He is third among Division III rookies with 1.14 points per game.

Grace garners the third straight All-SUNYAC honor of his career. The senior defenseman from Rochester has appeared in 24 games and tallied one goal and eight assists. Grace has helped anchor a defensive corps that has held league opponents to just 1.56 goals per game.

Cardinals meet Knights in SUNYAC semifinals {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/23/2013}

The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team made it look easy against Geneseo two weeks ago.

But the Cardinals also remember getting beat by the same team in November, so they know tonight’s matchup could be a battle.

That loss is definitely in the back of our minds,” Plattsburgh forward Kevin Emmerling said. “It was a tough loss going down there and playing. So yeah, it’s definitely on our minds. We know we want to come out flying and get that win.”

No. 2 Plattsburgh hosts No. 3 Geneseo tonight for 7 p.m. in a SUNY Athletic Conference semifinal. Oswego faces Buffalo State in the other semifinal, and the winners will meet in next week’s championship game.

Geneseo (17-8-1) reached today’s contest by routing Potsdam 9-0 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. David Ripple had two goals and an assist in that game, and he’s tied for third on the team with 22 points. Zachary Vit leads the Knights with a 7-20-27 scoring line, and Jack Caradonna is next with 23 points, including a team-best 21 assists.

Adrian Rubeniuk and Bryan Haude have shared goaltending duties this season. Haude was in net Wednesday, when he made 22 saves for his fifth shutout of the season. The sophomore also played in both regular-season games against Plattsburgh.

They’re a hard-working team. They’re a great team,” Emmerling said. “They get pucks in, play good defense. I think if we just get the puck to the net like we’ve been doing and play solid defense, just keep doing what we’ve been doing … I think we’ll be all right.

“But it’s a good team. We’re going to come ready to play, and we’re going to see what happens
.”

Geneseo has one of the better power plays in Division III, with a 27.5 percent success rate that ranks sixth. Ryan Bulach leads the team with seven power-play goals.

The Knights edged Plattsburgh 3-2 in Geneseo Nov. 16, and then Plattsburgh skated to a 6-1 win Feb. 8 at Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh (18-6-1) earned a quarterfinal bye in the tournament after finishing second in the conference in the regular season. The Cardinals won their final four regular-season games and nine of their last 10.

Jared Docking sits atop their scoring list with 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists), followed closely by Luke Baleshta (7-18-25) and Emmerling (14-10-24). Mathieu Cadieux boasts a 1.75 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.

The Cardinals know they’re unlikely to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, so they need to keep winning to extend their season.

“I think every game we’re always ready to go, but … maybe a little more sense of urgency coming into the playoffs,” Emmerling said. “Everybody’s ready; everybody’s on top of their game.

“It’s always a little bit faster, always a little bit more physical. So just working on the little things and keep going.”

Road to the Semifinals
Plattsburgh State won seven of its eight SUNYAC games in the second semester to complete the regular season with a 13-2-1 record in league play and lock up the second seed in this year’s tournament. The Cardinals finished with 27 points in the SUNYAC standings – just one point behind top seed Oswego State. After receiving a first-round bye, tonight’s game marks the Cardinals’ 23rd appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament under Head Coach Bob Emery and 26th overall.

After suffering a pair of losses at the end of the regular season on its annual North Country Trip, Geneseo dropped to third place in the standings. But those two losses may just prove to be a bump in the road as the Ice Knights cruised to a 9-0 victory against sixth-seeded Potsdam Wednesday night in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals. The Ice Knights are making their 22nd tournament appearance.

Head-To-Head
The Cardinals own a 75-17-3 record against the Ice Knights, including a 15-4-0 mark in tournament games.
Plattsburgh and Geneseo split the series during the regular season. The Ice Knights handed the Cardinals their first loss of the season, defeating Plattsburgh 3-2 on Nov. 16 at Geneseo. The Cardinals avenged the early season setback by defeating Geneseo, 6-1, at the Stafford Ice Arena on Feb. 8.

Scouting the Teams

Plattsburgh State Cardinals
Senior forward Jared Docking’s emergence as the team leader has helped spark a Plattsburgh offense that averages 3.76 goals per game. Docking earned First Team All-SUNYAC honors earlier this week as the Cardinals’ leading scorer with 28 points. He is tied for the team lead with five power-play goals and has scored a team-best three short-handed goals. Not to be overlooked, Plattsburgh’s freshman class has been one of the best in recent years. Rookie forward Luke Baleshta ranks second with 25 points while Kevin Emmerling is hot off the heels of a Third Team All-SUNYAC nod with a team-high 14 goals.

The Cardinals’ defense is the best in the SUNYAC, holding its opponents to 1.76 goals per game. Junior Nick Jensen has helped solidify Plattsburgh at the blueline, earning the first all-conference honor of his career after making a mid-season switch to defense, while senior defenseman Mike Grace was also recognized for his play with his third-straight All-SUNYAC award.

Junior goaltender Mathieu Cadieux also garnered All-SUNYAC First Team recognition with a conference-best 1.75 goals-against average. He enters the weekend with a 14-6-1 record overall and an 11-2-1 mark against SUNYAC teams.

Geneseo Ice Knights
Second Team All-SUNYAC honoree Zachary Vit leads the Geneseo offense with seven goals and 22 assists for 29 points while senior forward Corbin Rosmarin has scored a team-high 13 goals. The Ice Knights has also enjoyed a breakout season from defenseman Jack Caradonna who is second in team scoring with 24 points. Caradonna also received SUNYAC First Team honors earlier this week as the lone sophomore on this year’s all-conference team.

Geneseo comes into this weekend’s game with the second best offense in the SUNYAC, scoring 3.88 goals per game while the defense has allowed 2.50 goals per game. The Ice Knights power-play unit has converted 27.5 percent (33-for-120) of its opportunities to rank second in the league. The Cardinals’ penalty kill will have to keep an eye on Ryan Bulach, who leads Geneseo with seven power-play markers.

In the first game against the Cardinals this season, Adrian Rubeniuk started the game but exited early in the second period due to an injury. Sophomore goaltender Bryan Haude stepped in to make 14 saves for his first win of the season. Haude stepped back between the pipes two weeks ago against Plattsburgh State but suffered the loss despite making 32 saves. After a win in the quarterfinals against Potsdam, Haude enters the weekend with a 7-3-0 record and 2.20 goals-against average. If the Ice Knights decide to switch it up, expect to see Rubeniuk get the nod with an 8-4-1 record and 2.62 goals-against average.

Not quite the craziness of last week, but there's certainly a line forming here at the stafford. I got in line at about 2pm, and I'm sitting outside the ladies' restroom. Excited to see some Cardinal Hockey!

Plattsburgh alumni Dylan Clarke took part in one of the longest shootouts in history as part of the Evansville IceMen. It went 21 rounds. This is the box score.

Guess I know what I'll be doing Wednesday morning!

There are always people in the hallway handing single tickets away before the game. I have handed tickets away in years past, and grabbed one this year for the Plattsburgh game.

I've got a group going down.... we've always (as long as we've been able to) bought our tickets in advance to make sure. hopefully someday Plattsburgh will have a system like this to make it easier for visitors in the future.

Cardinals Defeat Geneseo, Punch Ticket to SUNYAC Finals {Courtesy of Stephanie Dutton, Plattsburgh Sports Information Director}

A lengthy power-play at the start of the third period allowed the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team to break open the game and skate to a 5-1 win in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Semifinal against third-seed Geneseo at the Stafford Ice Arena.

With the win, the stage is set for a rematch with top-seeded Oswego State for the SUNYAC Championship next Saturday at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The Lakers defeated Buffalo State, 5-2, in the other semifinal matchup.

A back-and-forth first period ended with zeroes on the scoreboard and an 11-9 advantage for the Ice Knights in shots on goal, but the Cardinals quickly grabbed momentum in the second period on Dillan Fox’s goal with just 27 seconds off the clock. Jared Docking threw the puck at the back of the net and Fox brought it around front before the puck deflected off the boot of a Geneseo defender and past Bryan Haude to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead.

Docking stretched the Plattsburgh (19-6-1) lead to 2-0 at the 13:08 mark with his 11th of the year. Brandon Beadow’s long pass found an open Docking in the Geneseo zone and the Cardinals’ leading scorer made the Ice Knights pay, fending off a defender before he poked a backhander through the five-hole of Haude.

Geneseo (17-9-1) got one back late in the period just as a power play expired to come within one. Nate Brown ripped a shot from the point that was stopped by Mathieu Cadieux, but Kaz Iwamoto was positioned perfectly to bury the rebound for his third of the year at 18:58.

That was close as the Ice Knights would come as the turning point in Saturday’s game came when Carson Shell received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for hitting from behind within 32 seconds of the start of the third. The Cardinals quickly took advantage of the opportunity with a blast from Mark Constantine at the point. Luke Baleshta and Fox aided in the setup to make it 3-1 in favor of Plattsburgh.

With the Cardinals still on the power play, Alex Jensen gave Plattsburgh a three-goal lead on a give-and-go up the left side with Alex Brenton at the 3:29 mark.

The Ice Knights pulled Haude with 2:25 left put Geneseo was unable to get one by Cadieux in the final minutes. Plattsburgh’s Connor Gorman wrapped up the scoring with 43 second left with an empty-net goal for his fifth of the year.

The Cardinals finished the evening with a 28-23 edge in shots on goal. Plattsburgh went 2-for-4 on the power play while Geneseo went 0-for-4.

Cadieux recorded 22 saves to improve to 15-6-1 on the year and lower his goals-against average to 1.72. Haude made 23 stops in the loss for the Ice Knights.

Oswego State now stands in between Plattsburgh and its 22nd SUNYAC Title. The Cardinals and the Lakers will square off on Saturday, March 2 at 7 p.m. for the conference crown and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Tickets for the upcoming SUNYAC Championship game will be made available to the general public on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Tickets are $8 for adults and SUNY students are free with a valid college ID. The Campus Center Box Office hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Wednesday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Cardinals cruise into SUNYAC championship game {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/24/2013}

Plattsburgh State scored two goals on the same power play to start Saturday’s third period and was well on its way to the SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey championship game.

“That was huge, obviously. That was the turning point of the game, you know?” Plattsburgh senior Jared Docking said. “The boys were fired up after that, obviously. And a three-goal lead against our team in the third period … not a lot of teams can do that.

“So we felt pretty confident. We just knew if we played good defensively, got the pucks out, we were going to have a good chance to win the game.”

Mark Constantine and Alex Jensen scored the two key goals and the second-seeded Cardinals beat No. 3 seed Geneseo 5-1in a semifinal game at Stafford Ice Arena. Plattsburgh advanced to next week’s final against No. 1 Oswego, which beat No. 4 Buffalo State 5-2 Saturday.

The Cardinals (19-6-1) held a 2-1 lead after two periods. Docking went down hard in the corner early in the third and had to be helped off the ice. Geneseo’s Carson Schell was assessed a five-minute major for hitting from behind and a game misconduct.

The Cardinals quickly took advantage of the long power play, with Constantine making it 3-1 21 seconds in. They continued to have the man advantage, and Jensen took a nice feed from Alex Brenton and banged it past Bryan Haude.

The Knights pulled Haude at the end of the period, and Connor Gorman put the puck in the empty net in the final minute.

Mathieu Cadieux stopped 22 shots for Plattsburgh.

You’re only as good as your goaltender in this sport … He played great; defense played really well (Saturday),” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “I thought we did a good job for the most part on our D-zone coverage.”

The Knights held an 11-9 edge in shots during a scoreless first period. Then Dillan Fox put the Cardinals on the board just 27 seconds into the second.

“They outplayed us for a little bit in the first period. And we weren’t worried, but we knew we had to pick up our game and then just get momentum,” Docking said. “And the boys got a little fired up when we scored that goal, so it was a pretty big goal. It changed momentum in the game.”

Docking broke into the Knights’ zone, got past a defenseman and muscled the puck through the five hole for a 2-0 lead at 13:08.

Geneseo (17-9-1) pulled back within a goal 1:02 before intermission, when Kaz Iwamoto slammed in a rebound off a long shot by Nate Brown.

I gotta give Geneseo a lot of credit; they played hard,” Emery said. “I liked their game plan. They came in here and played very simple, and they just tried to peck away, peck away, peck away. They’re a real hard-working team, well coached.”

Docking, Gorman and Fox all finished with a goal and an assist.

Haude made 23 saves.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

It is great to be moving on and congrats to the team for all their hard work and determination. I was sorry to see the lack of sportsmanship by #24 of the Knights who broke his stick on the goal post at the end of the game, after the empty net goal, and then threw it up into the nets above. I realize the frustration and disappointment they must be feeling, however win or lose with some class. That has always been the motto at PSU. Now, it's on to The Lakers! GO CARDS!

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

I'd say if the lakers play the way they did last night its the birds by 3 goals
