Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

The Cards were definitely looking great during the second period tonight. Geneseo didn't seem to pose much of a threat until the tables began to turn towards the end of the third period. It almost seemed like Plattsburgh let their guard down a bit during the third - but they maintained control and easily subdued the Ice Knights.

Did anybody else notice that VanDermale's shot from the slot looked like it got redirected by Eric Satim? I think he should have been credited with the first goal.

Cards avenge Geneseo loss - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/22/2011}

A strong second period was just enough to provide the difference for the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team Friday night.

The Cardinals scored three times in the second and then held on for an important 4-2 victory over Geneseo in State University of New York Athletic Conference play at the Stafford Ice Arena.

The 13th-ranked Cardinals, unbeaten in their last 10 games, improved to 5-4 in the conference and 12-4-1 overall. The loss dropped the seventh-ranked Knights to 5-3-1 in the SUNYAC and 11-5-2 overall.

"Geneseo is a good team — they are deserving of their ranking," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery.

"It was a good win for us tonight. But, I've said all along we continue to be a work in progress."

It was a scoreless first period, despite the Cardinals having some problems against the bigger Knights.

"It was more of a feeling-out process in the first period," said Emery. "But, we were losing a lot of the one-on-one battles."

That changed, however, in the second stanza when the Cardinals took a 3-0 lead.

Kyle VanDermale opened the scoring at 3:45 when he turned back in towards the middle from the sideboards and sent a shot into the net, with Eric Satim providing a screen in front.

Then, at 7:34, Kyle Kudroch was all alone when he got the puck in front of the Geneseo net to beat Knights' goalie Cory Gershon.

Plattsburgh State made it 3-0 at 15:49. Dan Sliasis sent a wrister up top from straight on, with the teams skating four-aside.

"We played a real good second period," said Emery. "And, then we played smart for the first part of the third."

The start of the third period was delayed when the fire alarm went off in the arena.

The Cardinals maintained their three-goal lead until the 9:25 mark when David Arduin's tip-in put Geneseo on the board.

It then got real interesting at 14:16 on Colin de Jersey's rebound goal that pulled the Knights to within, 3-2.

"We had problems with our defensive zone coverage," said Emery. "It was more mental than anything."

But, any thoughts of a Geneseo comeback were dashed at the 18:41 mark on Ryan Craig's empty-net goal.

Gershon was pulled for an extra attacker with a faceoff in the Plattsburgh State end. Craig flicked the puck out of the zone where it stayed on its side and slowly curved perfectly into the net.

Josh Leis made 19 saves in net for the Cardinals, who finished with a 28-21 advantage in shots on goal. Plattsburgh State held a 13-5 edge in the second period.

"We had some players who played real well tonight and some others who didn't play well at all," said Emery. "We didn't get the leadership we needed in the third."

The Cardinals are back on the ice tonight at 7 p.m. when they host Brockport. The Golden Eagles were beaten, 7-3, in Potsdam Friday night.

The coaching staff will watch the tape, if they determine that it went off Satim they will officially change the score sheet.... Plattsburgh players are not allowed to talk to the officials about who scored or who might have tipped it in.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Ducky mentioned a Cardinal player as the culprit on the 2nd goal for Genny , he said that player (unnamed ,didnt return to the ice for the remainder of the period ) ,anyone catch who it was and what he (did or didnt do on the play) ? Will he get the Bessing treatment , or just a correction while reviewing the film over and over and over etc.

Ducky also said it was a player who had been playing quite well during the streak . Anybody have an idea who it was . I missed it while watching the game as the sudden 3-2 score was a little distracting .

He said the name when it first happened, but I missed who it was and they refused to single him out at the end (which was a very classy decision by them, IMO). Whoever it was, they will probably get the Bessing treatment if it was really that bad, I don't doubt that. Emery will probably decide an appropriate punishment when he reviews the tapes, and not a minute sooner. As tough as he can be, he does seem to try to be fair in giving the players the punishments and rewards they earn.

It was Ryan Corry. How do I know? Because I watched Emery freak the heck out on him on the bench for about five straight minutes. I'm not 100% sure on this, but as opposed to dumping the puck deep when up 3-1 to get a change...Corry made some sort of selfish play which ended in a TO and resulted in a goal. I think he'll be in Emery's doghouse, but won't receive the same treatment as Bessing. If Corry gets scratched, then Hepler would be in since he's the seventh and final defensmen.

Freak out would be an understatement I was sitting where I got to hear everything and pretty much the only part I can say that did not include numerous 4 letter words was "Your a senior play like it" and yes I believe Corry took the puck from behind the net came to the front where he held it a little to long. I would think you are going to see Helper tonight and does anybody know how Vick is doing after that hit in the 1st period?

Plattsburgh's only got three subs to play with. Isn't a whole lot you can do with discipline if there are injuries unless he's going to start skating down a few players.

Or Emery could pull a reverse of what Oswego has had to do a few times these past few years, instead of using a Forward/Defensemen as a goalie use a goalie as a Forward or Defensemen

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Kind of ironic, the Plattsburgh girls are playing in RIT on the same day the men are honoring the 2001 National Championship over RIT.... Chris Learch made a comment about a Wisconsin goaltender complaining about the "sunlight" at the Ritter Arena during the game....Nathan Ziemski :)

Well, when your opponent takes three shots in the first period and winds up leading 3-1, you've gotta come up with something :)

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Listening to Ducky at the moment. This is kind of amusing, since you can hear the recordings of Ducky screaming "Score" over the PA in the background.

This speech by Mike Daoust's father is awesome. I love that they're doing all this. I just wish I could've been in Plattsburgh for it all.

They played a video commemorating the 2000-2001 National Championship team. Several of the goals featured on the video contained audio clips of Ducky calling them back in day. I'm going to email coach so I can buy a copy.

What?!

Oh yeah...There were quite a number of folks (near the doors we were exiting) that refused to actually exit the building. It was pretty ridiculous actually. Most folks are familiar with fire drills and such - even kindergartners understand the simple concept of leaving so others can exit. Craziness.

Totally unrelated, but I wonder - did anyone hear what triggered the alarm in the first place? I overheard a few folks commenting that there was smoke somewhere in the building, but it didn't seem like it was anything major and they didn't appear to be the most reputable of sources...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

I cannot believe Brockport actually managed to be a threat. Maybe it was a mental thing since the Golden Eagles are arguably one of the worst teams all around; but it was definitely sloppy tonight.

I think we're in danger of seeing the recent streak come to a close if this trend continues. Brockport should have been a walk in the park for the Cards; serving as an easy two points in the SUNYAC and a great opportunity to control the game/boost their confidence. Unfortunately, that didn't happen - and the Cardinals were hanging on for dear life until late in the evening.
