Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

90-91...19-7-1, 11-3 SUNYAC -- oswego champions, fredonia coach of the year -- no platty playoff appearance

It depends on how you look at things, really. The last time Plattsburgh missed a SUNYAC final that they could've played (ie, they weren't serving one ban or another) was 1984. Between 1985 and 1993, Plattsburgh won every SUNYAC title they could, but were barred from the tournament three times ('86, '89, '91).

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

just found out today that Chris Wieland has left the team.

Odd time to leave after the team playing like four games this semester?

I've heard that he's now attending Castleton? If so, is he eligible to play for the Spartans this semester, or does he have to sit the rest of this season because he's already played for the Cardinals this semester?

Has the semester started at either school? I know the NU semester starts Monday.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Yes, if I remember right it was one of Fredonias back to back runs.91-92 was the last ECAC I think. We were sent to Elmira for the conf playoffs, left the hardware on the ice. Unless it was 92-93 when we went to UWRF for the final four. NORM?!?!?!?

Plattsburgh has won 18 SUNYAC Championships -1978-79-82-83-85-87-88-90-92-93-97-98-99-2000-01-02-04-08

They have NCAA 19 Tournament Appearances - 1981-82-85-86-87-88-90-92-93-95-97-
98-99-2000-01-02-04-08-09

Also, they have 16 NCAA Frozen Four Berths - 1981-82-83-85-86-87-90-92-93-98-2000-01-02-04-08-09

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

It may be because this forum has made me more aware of players leaving the team; but is there usually this many players leaving the team at mid-season? I often wonder when I see a player not dressed to play what the story is why they are standing behind the glass in jackets and ties. When I go to the pro games the program list trades, injuries and such. They will announce healthy scratches before the game. I realize that the federal education and privacy act probably prevents disciplinary actions, or academic reasons to be publicized. I am sure that some of the players departed due to lack of ice time. While others may not have been able to make it academically. I am sure that seeing there are only a few players from New York State that the rest of the team has a hard time with out of state tuition. So is this mid season exodus common with P.S.U. and other teams?

PSU normally loses a guy or two every year but they also usually gain a player too, which they did this year as well.

However, this mass exodus is the biggest I remember seeing it.

It was 1991-92 that we won the Triple Crown: SUNYAC, ECAC and national championship. I still have my triple crown sweatshirt as a souvenir.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Would anyone happen to know whether Behind the Bench will still broadcast next week (a day late, or whatever)? I'd like to hear Emery on this.

On this past Monday's show they were planning to air the next one on Tuesday.

"Yeah, the game is scheduled for Monday at 4:00pm. I hope we get a good showing of fans. We were hoping they (Williams) would come in undefeated."- Dylan Clarke to me a few nights ago at McDonald's. He also mentioned some VERY interesting things about some upcoming opponents that I can't post on here lol.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

The Spring semester begins at PSUC on Monday, January 31st...unfortunately. :(

January 31st?! Holy shnikes...Talk about a long winter break and I thought Oswego had a long one.

When did the fall semester end?

Classes resume at Norwich tomorrow and they had classes all the way up until around the 20th I believe.

Classes officially ended Friday, December 17th. My last final was the 16th.

So, as long as classes have not started yet at Castleton, the player who played for Plattsburgh during the break could still play at Castleton, since he wasn't yet officially enrolled at Castleton when he played for Platty. I think that's how it works.

Cardinals play in Monday matinee - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/17/2011}

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team has rebounded from a slow start to the season and now finds itself ranked 13th in the country in Division III.

Cardinals' head coach Bob Emery, however, isn't all that big on rankings this time of year.

"I don't care for the rankings — they don't tell my anything," he said. "I will be more concerned with the NCAA rankings when they come out.

"If I had my way, I would rather not have us ranked right now. It's hard enough to win games, but it makes it more difficult when you have a huge target on your back. Hockey is an emotional game."

The Cardinals return to the ice this afternoon in a rare 4 p.m. nonconference game against Williams College at the Stafford Ice Arena.

"We have to take care of business," said Emery. "Williams is one of the most improved teams in the NESCAC and has a good chance of getting into the NCAA Tournament.

"These are the type of games we need to win, but we're going to have our hands full. It's going to be a big week for us."

The Cardinals (10-4-1) overall had won eight games in a row until skating to a 2-all home overtime tie with Elmira on January 8.

Plattsburgh State, unbeaten in its last nine games, has not played since then.

"It's only been eight days and we'll see how it goes," said Emery. "That, along with the early starting time, shouldn't matter."

Williams (9-2-1) comes into today's game ranked seventh in the country in Division III.

The Ephs went 7-0-1 in their first eight games and were ranked as high as third before suffering losses at Amherst (4-2) and at Hamilton (6-3).

But, this past weekend, Williams righted the ship with a 3-2 overtime victory over Wesleyan on Friday and then a 5-0 blanking of Trinity on Saturday.

The Ephs have five players with 10 points or more, led by senior forward Ben Contini (8-12-20) and sophomore forward John Wickman (6-10-16).

Junior Ryan Purdy has a 9-2-1 record between the pipes, with an excellent 1.48 goals-against. The Ephs have held eight of their opponents to one goal or less.

"They have good goaltending and this is one of those types of games where you have to beat them with good defense," said Emery. "We've been emphasizing keeping the puck out of our net and nothing has changed."

Plattsburgh State forwards Patrick Jobb and Jared Docking, who have been out of the line-up with injuries, will be game-time decisions today.

After today's game, the Cardinals return to State University of New York Athletic Conference play on Friday and Saturday, with home games against Geneseo and Brockport, respectively.

Service personnel in uniform and area youth hockey players wearing their jerseys, accompanied by a parent, will be admitted into the game free of charge.

Cardinals build head of steam - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/18/2011}

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team is heading back into State University of New York Athletic Conference play with some momentum.

The Cardinals scored two goals in the first 2:37 of the game Monday afternoon and skated to a solid 5-1 non-conference win over Williams College at the Stafford Ice Arena.

"We came out flying," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We know how good we can be when we get the pick in deep. We did so today and were able to force some turnovers.

"Our forecheck was what won the game for us. It was a good win heading back into conference play."

Williams (9-3-1) entered Monday's game ranked sixth in the country in Division III.

But, the 13th-ranked Cardinals (11-4-1) took a 1-0 lead just 19 seconds into the contest on defenseman Ryan Corry's goal from just above the faceoff circle.

Then, at 2:37, Plattsburgh State had the bounce of the puck go its way when Ryan Craig lofted the puck in front from near the side boards where it deflected off a Williams defenseman and into the net.

The only problem the Cardinals had came in the first period when they were called for three penalties.

The first resulted in Connor Olivany's goal from in close off some nice passwork at 8:17, cutting the Ephs' deficit in half.

"We had to make adjustments to our penalty kill after the period," said Emery.

"It was uncharacteristic for us to take three penalties in the first. Usually, I get mad at the players for that. But, after watching the tape, I wasn't mad at them. The players were just playing hard."

The Cardinals added to their lead at 4:37 of the second. Williams goalie Ryan Purdy was down on the ice when Dan Sliasis took his time from straight on and lifted the puck into the net to make it 3-1.

It became 4-1 at 12:44 of the third. Kyle Kudroch was behind the Williams net when he centered the puck in front to Dylan Clarke, who one-timed it past Purdy.

Ryan Farnan's empty-net goal with six seconds left closed out the scoring.

"I thought we played smart with the lead," said Emery. "Anytime you can hold a team to under two goals, you're going to win a lot of hockey games."

Josh Leis had another solid game in net for the Cardinals, stopping 24 of 25 shots.

"They had some quality chances and Leis made the saves when he had to," said Emery. "He played with a lot of composure and confidence."

Purdy made 23 saves for the Ephs as Plattsburgh State finished with a 28-25 shot advantage.

The Cardinals, who are unbeaten in their last nine games (8-0-1), host Geneseo on Friday and Brockport on Saturday at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Four of Plattsburgh State wins during the recent streak have come against ranked opponents.
