PLATTSBURGH — For the last two weeks, the Cardinals have been craving a timely save that translates to success on the other end of the ice.
In the third period against Fredonia Saturday night, they got it.
Josh Leis made a huge shorthanded stop and Ryan Corry scooped up the puck coming out of the penalty box before transitioning and beating Blue Devils goalie Mark Friesen.
Corry's score following the save put the Cardinals up 2-1 at 3:02 in the third period and helped jumpstart the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory.
"Coming into tonight, I was trying to make the big saves to keep our team's spirits high," Leis said before describing the big play. "I think (a Fredonia player) tried to go back door. I went down and he went back to the D. I was trying to get up as quick as I could, and I think it just caught a piece of my stick."
Corry picked up the puck cleanly and swooped around to the right side, ripping a shot into the back of the net after crossing the blue line.
"That just lifted our hopes big-time and got us going," Plattsburgh forward Kyle Kudroch said.
Shortly after, Kudroch proved how big of a lift it was.
Ten seconds after Corry's goal, the Cardinals turned a dump-in into the game-winning play as Kudroch gave Plattsburgh a 3-1 lead.
"We dumped it in with two forecheckers and actually missed the hit," Kudroch said. "(Dan) Sliasis passed it to (Dylan) Clarke, and I was open all by myself and just one-timed it in."
Leis made another game-changing save when he stopped Fredonia's Bryan Ross on a breakaway with 14 seconds to go in the second period.
Kudroch also had a breakaway shut down by Friesen in the third period.
The Cardinals, who lost to Buffalo State Friday night, improved to 3-4 with the victory.
Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said the team's leadership was better Saturday than it had been so far this season, citing Sliasis, Vick Schlueter, Mike Kavanagh and Leis as standouts in that regard.
"The difference tonight is we found a way to win," Emery said. "We've been playing pretty good but have been finding ways to lose.
"I still think we're a good team. I think we're a better team than we had last year going to the Final Four, but we've got to find chemistry here."
Fredonia played defensively throughout the opening period, allowing Plattsburgh to get some time handling the puck.
Cody Adams netted his first goal of the season to give the Cardinals a lead late in the stanza, but Plattsburgh gave up a turnover and Marc Deeley redirected a Billy Sanborn shot to knot the score at 1-1 with 27 seconds to go.
Kudroch said that despite the untimely goal, Plattsburgh was able to maintain positivity on the bench.
"The bench is an important part of the game, getting the guys going on the ice," he said. "Nobody got down tonight. The confidence level was high."
Emery added that the "team rallied behind (Leis)," and "the assistant coaches did a great job keeping the guys positive."
Fredonia's Mat Hehr cut into Plattsburgh's lead after Kudroch's goal, but Patrick Jobb all but sealed it with a roofer coming across the top of the slot.
"This win puts us in the positive mode," Emery said. "We've been in the negative mode for too long... too much pressure."
Plattsburgh will host the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout Friday and Saturday.
The Cardinals will face St. John's University at 7 p.m. Friday after Norwich takes on Middlebury at 4 p.m.
Saturday, the third-place game will be held at 4 p.m., followed by the championship game at 7 p.m.
Enjoyed watching the game thru the Primelink livestream. Certainly hope this performance is the jumpstart the team needs heading into next weekend's tourney. Another defensive lapse -- Adams admitted to it in his between period interview -- but otherwise an all around balanced game I think. Leis cemented himself as the goalie next weekend? Post game, players and arena crew started bringing folding tables and chairs out on the ice, putting them on/near the blue line across from the benches. Because of the camera angle, right above where they were setting up, I couldn't see what was going on. Anyone know?

Just announced! Elmira will be in the Primelink next year as opposed to a West invitee!
(According to Coach Emery)
Thoughts?
Sounds like Plattsburgh's way out of making the trip to Elmira next year![]()
Okay, I'll throw this out here. Actually hope I don't get a response
Any season-ticket holders not planning on making it to the Primelink? I'll gladly buy your tickets off you if that's the case. Better to put a fanny in the seat if it's getting counted in attendance, am I right?

Actually, coach said on BTB that Elmira will no longer be on our schedule after this year due to distance and expense. I believe Castleton will replace them. Too bad. I guess we will just see them at the PrimeLink.
Exactly. Where is this proving anything I said wrong?
Emery has said numerous times he loves playing Elmira at home but hates making the trip down to Elmira. It's a real shame that they won't be playing each other anymore. Just let it be known its not on Elmira's end the series is ending.
I think there would have been a better shot of keeping this series on the schedule if there was a second game that weekend. Traveling to either Plattsburgh or Elmira by the other team just one game is quite a shot to the wallet.... if there was another game involved I think we would continue to see it happen. maybe the Primelink will become a bit more regular appearance for Elmira so we can continue to see Plattsburgh and Elmira play almost yearly.
Yeah but never at the Domes....
The Annual PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout is an early-season showcase of some of the most talented teams in NCAA Division III men's hockey.
But three of the four teams entered in this year's event will be looking to turn their season in the right direction after starting slowly in 2010-11.
Today's opening-round schedule at the Stafford Ice Arena has Norwich versus Middlebury at 4 p.m., followed by St. John's (Minn.) against Plattsburgh State at 7 p.m.
The third-place game is set for Saturday at 4 p.m., with the championship contest at 7 p.m.
Defending Division III champion Norwich is off to a 2-0 start.
But the other three teams have combined for a 5-12 record to this point.
"Only two teams (in Division III) — Oswego and Norwich — are doing really well right how, and they're the two teams with the best financial aid," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "Everyone else is doing just okay.
"But one of the other teams in the tournament could turn it into a positive this weekend."
The Cardinals played St. John's in the 2007 PrimeLink in Plattsburgh and emerged with a 4-3 win in the opening round.
"St. John's gave us a great game, and we had to go into overtime to beat them," said Emery. "We're excited about the tournament. It's the best tournament in Division III hockey, with a good sponsor in PrimeLink, and you have a great game at 4 p.m. with Norwich and Middlebury playing.
"We don't know much about St. John's, and they don't know much about us. That makes it a more fun game to play. You have to combine talent with good hockey smarts to come out on top."
Norwich won last year's PrimeLink with a 4-3 shootout win over Plattsburgh State after the two teams battled to a 1-all tie in the title contest at Kreitzberg Arena.
Norwich has won the tournament, which is in its 13th year, six times, Middlebury four times and Plattsburgh State twice, with both Cardinal championships coming at Stafford.

Hmmm..is that an "oblique" way of saying that the Cardinals are a "work in progress" because their financial aid is lacking. OR is Coach E making a pre tourney excuse. Does not bode well.
