Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

not to worry they wil get better this weekend with 2 lesser opponets coming in .....in turn may give them more confidence, and start a roll..........

"Lesser" opponents? "Lesser" opponents which are both allowing fewer goals per game than Plattsburgh, have a higher penalty kill percentage than Plattsburgh and each with goaltenders who have a sub-3 (buff state) and sub-2 (fredonia) goals-against average and plus-.920 save percentages, all better numbers than Plattsburgh goaltenders? Not sure how you can classify a team being a "lesser" opponent when they rank higher in all of those things -- other than the fact that you seem to think similarly to the USCHO poll voters -- as long as your name is Plattsburgh, you have the advantage.

Look, I'm not saying they don't have a chance this weekend. But the attitude that these are "lesser" opponents is exactly how you lost to a Geneseo and a Morrisville this early in the season. If you think like that and the team thinks like that, you can be sure they won't go 2-0 this weekend. Every team is a good team. There are no lesser opponents right now when you have to have a sense of urgency this early in the season.

Compared to who's coming in the following weekend, or say Oswego or Geneseo...yes they are lesser opponents. Having said that you are 110% correct. They need to come out and pretend they are facing a team like Oswego and not take for granted who is on the other bench.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

On the topic of lesser teams I seem to recall a 7-3 loss to a Geneseo team that Buffalo just played to a tie last weekend.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Not sure who said it in another thread, but just wanted to stir up things around these threads for some fun, but anyway, I think Platts will have a good weekend against 2 improving teams that will firming up the whole SUNYAC conf., which will make for better hockey within the conf. and perhaps we can do even better out of the conf.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Cardinals lose aura in SUNYAC - {Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 11/19/2010}

For more than 20 years, Bob Emery has made sure his team never looked down on its opponent.

Entering the fourth week of the 2010 State University of New York Athletic Conference men's hockey season at 2-3, now is not the time to start for Plattsburgh State.
...
"The way we are playing right now, we are definitely beatable," Emery said. "Our leadership has to step up, and we have to fine tune a lot of parts of our game."

Buffalo State comes to Plattsburgh with a 2-2-1 record and a goals/goals-against ratio of 13-15.

The Bengals dropped their first two games to Oswego and Cortland before stringing together one-goal victories over Fredonia and Brockport.

They tied Geneseo, 1-1, last Saturday.

"Buffalo State is newly energized," Emery said. "They have lots of new players and play with a lot of emotion. They are well-coached."
...
"You can't be playing catch-up by two goals each week," Emery said. "I think we can't let up that early soft goal like we've done a lot because it puts pressure on us offensively."

Special teams played a big role in the loss to the Mustangs.

Emery said the power play worked really well like it has all season, but it didn't reflect on the scoreboard despite some chances early on, including a long power play on a major penalty.

The penalty kill, Emery added, was the real cause for concern.

"I was very concerned about the penalty kill and the lack of discipline there," he said. "There will be some players out because of that."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

I just returned home from downtown Plattsburgh. I noticed signs all the way up Rugar St. advising Men's Cardinal Hockey, Fieldhouse Tonight @ 7:00PM. At least an attempt is being made to spike student attendence.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

One word sums up the 2010-2011 Plattsburgh State Cardinals...ATROCIOUS!

I can't believe I pay $120 to watch this ****?

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Been going to Cardinal games--home and away--pretty much all season-every season since 1987-88. Can't remember seeing two worse back to back performances anytime during that 23 year time span.

Maybe the conference is getting more competitive, but the 2010-2011 Cardinals surely aren't part of that competitive growth. At least not what we've seen so far.

If things don't turn around--and soon, it's gonna be a looong season with an early ending. Ugh

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Yikes...I cannot recall seeing the Cardinals this bad...ever. Granted, I've only been a fan since '97 but man...How could the night start off seemingly so right - only to wind up in a 6-2 train wreck? It seemed as if the game went from a confident, competitive team straight into a complete meltdown.

http://www.therobbrennan.com/journal/2010/11/19/buffalo-state-stuns-plattsburgh-6-2.html

I would like to hope that things turn around tomorrow night, but given how this season has started that may be wishful thinking. From my perspective, it looked like they were really trying to change things up some - and yet we have the same problems over...and over...and over...It's going to be a short season if we cannot get our defensive coverage under control and our goaltending stabilized.

On a somewhat related note, anyone know what the deal is with the frequent scoreboard malfunctions? It seems like the entire system continually goes bonkers once we are on the power play. Any idea if it's user error, or perhaps some other glitch?

PS - Hats off to the folks at the Stafford Arena for the slideshow/video before the game. It brought back memories of when that place was hopping with the light show and crowd energy for me (1997-2001). I thought we were potentially going to see the light show resurrected; but classic hockey footage and pre-game slides fit the bill, too.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Bill -- any chance you are going to be tweeting the game...or perhaps fb updates?

I can't speak to whether or not Bill is tweeting the games, but I've been doing that for awhile, too. Either or - both seem to be great choices for Cardinal tweeting =)

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Don't hang yourselves yet. It's mostly a goaltending problem and a little over confidence by some sophomores after last year. I f they can stick together and avoid any finger pointing I think they may weather this storm. One good performance by a goaltender would help their team confidence. They are playing scared and that's a sure way to lose. They have to feel their way out of this.:(

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

I have a good feeling the 2010-2011 Cards season is going to be A LOT like the 2005-2006 season. They'll be there in the end...like always.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

I know it's rather trivial compared to the ugly, ugly night for the Cards on the ice, but I can't help but be significantly disappointed that the team turned in such a poor performance on an evening with some quality student support. The school did an admirable job getting students out to watch the game this evening, and it appears they did so at precisely the worst time. I'll hold out hope that some of the kids had enough fun to attend games in the future, but tonight certainly wasn't a good first impression :(

I was more thinking the 2006-2007 season. The Cards started out 2-4, and didn't become .500 till the first week in December at 4-4-2. It was much like this season, a lot of defensive mistakes and some ugly goals caused the team to play tight. They got a huge win in Oswego that year late in the season and then went on a 4 game win streak outscoring their opponents 31-8. For the majority of the season Plattsburgh dominated games, but couldn't put the puck in the net, and would let in soft goals which would deflate the whole team. The talent was there, but it was a huge mental block.......sounds really familiar.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

It's mostly a goaltending problem

realistically I'd love to agree with you, but I can't. yes there have been some weak goals but many of the goals have been more of a matter of the goalie getting hung out. Leis came up with a few great saves in the Oswego game when he got hung out but you can't expect a goalie to do it everytime. Last night I though Foley played well for his frist game. yes there were the "typical" weak goals, but there were a couple nice saves and a couple obvious mistakes. I don't know if or when he will get another shot but he did start out well.

as for the rest of the team. they started out great, they came out strong, played physical and were getting some pretty good shots but just couldn't cash in. I thought they responded well after Buffalo scored their first goal, but after goin ahead 2-1 they allowed Buffalo to tie it almost right away and you could see them deflate... I really don't know what "changes" can be made to help this out... I think it's more of a mental thing that they players have to figure out. I would like to see what Neitsche has as a player, maybe we'll get to see him play tonight.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11

Hey Remy...Did you or Bill-R put a virus on USCHO to avoid all the backlash that might have been directed in Plattsburgh's direction for losing again and dropping to 2-4?;):D

(It wouldn't have mattered this year anyway. No one is posting.)

It's eerie, isn't it? I half-feel like starting a gag "Fire Emery" thread just to see if I could angle any serious responses/irate handshake purists (not really).

I think its more that fans are snickering, but those who saw the Oswego game saw how good Plattsburgh can be and are just as confused as we are. The only difference is, they don't care why its confusing or what's wrong....just keep losing.

Buffalo State stings Cardinals - {Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 11/19/2010}

...
"Until we get it going again, we've got to somehow hold our opponents to zero goals," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. "We're playing with a lot of frustration, and you can't play the game like that."
...
"It's a sin to give up a goal at the end of the period like that," Emery said. "We fought back, they made it 2-2 and we have a turnover in our own end and the next thing you know, the puck is in the back of our net."
...
"It seems like every mistake we make this year, the puck's in the back of our net," Emery said.

Shane Avery, Mike Connolly and Trevor McKinney lit the lamp in the final period.

"I'm a big believer in learning from the past," Emery said. "But we can't repeat the past.

"Someone has to take charge of our team. We're not handling adversity too well."
