Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

How about Ryan Craig? In nine games played he has 3 goals and 7 assists for 10 points. He's 9th on the team in scoring (points) and he's only played less than half the overall games by far this season. I think he's been a great asset to the team, especially on the power play.

Comments?

he should have went to OZZZ...;-))

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

I dont think Emery likes free wheeling offense in general , I think sometimes players who may be able to create offense know that if they are out of position on the back check that they face the wrath of Bob. Bessing and Farnan comes to mind as player with some skills on offense that in time may contribute more points per game. Bessing has been in the Doghouse most of his short career at Plattsburgh but I see him as a player that could develop ,if he doesnt exit early for friendlier confines.

All of the above is in my humble opinion of course .

Clarke is a lunch pail guy , he grinds out everything he gets , great hands in close but not a sniper , great rebound redirect scorer , Joey Wilson was the last great scorer

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Thanks Norm. Lots of content there. Do you think either Satim or Clarke will take offense to the "no pure goal scorer" comment? It would be interesting to find out if Emery thought that/felt that way at the begining of the season. Or did guys just not develop the way he had anticipated?

Here are some qoutes:

Quote from approximately 8:40 –

Referencing the Cortland game –

Ducky – “How much of a difference did it make, if any, did the absence of Jensen, Jobb and Tyler make in the Friday night against Cortland, I know there is no way to really know this, but.”

Emery – “We played well enough to win.”

Ducky – “Oh, certainly”

Emery – “You know what I mean, um, those three guys are great hockey players. Are they goal scorers like Steve Moffat, no, are they goal scorers like Joey Wilson, no – you know what I mean, so I don’t know if I we had a big goal scorer not in our lineup tonight, – you know what I mean and I’m not so sure like Jeff Paluseo, none of those guys can score like those.”

Ducky – “Jensen certainly has the potential.”

Emery – “Oh, Jensen has the potential, but he will get different types of goals – you know what I mean, powerful – you know – and we just don’t have that guy on the team that is a 28 to 30 goal scorer. You know we don’t have Clarkie, who bangs in his rebounds, and sit around the net, and stuff like that. Um, I, and we don’t have like a pure, pure, pure, scorer, – you know what I mean, that I look at my roommate when I was in college, Bobby Sweeny, he’d dump it in and go in the net – you know what I mean, he got 37 goals or something like that when I was at BCU or something – you know what I mean. I don’t think we have that and with that said, you put those three guys out on a lineup and yeah, we eventually going to work on the net are they going to get that big 2 – 3 goals, no.”

Quote from approximately 12:35

Emery – “You know I’ve been here a long time as we’ve talked about all that and lots of times over the years I’ve been really ticked off with a lot of the teams. They don’t come out and play with the emotions; they don’t come out and play with the effort. I’ve put them in old jerseys, I’ve taken their sticks away, told them to buy their own sticks, moved them out of the locker room, told them to take their bags home for a week, you know it’s because we didn’t have the emotion, and the drive and the effort – But, this team right here, our team, we haven’t been out played once this year.”

Anyone know when the last time (if it has ever even happened) that Plattsburgh has lost three in a row at home?

Oct 29, 2006 at the Stafford was a loss, followed by three AWAY losses.

Jan 21 was a loss to Potsdam, followed by a loss Jan 25 to Middlebury, both at the Stafford, which were then followed by three away losses.

The Championship 2001 team saw a loss at home on Feb 23, followed by two straight ties, also at home - this is the closest I on CollegeHockeyStats.net.

Yep, and I think Joey was initially considered much less of a loss than he really was. Clarke and Satim still had a couple of years to play, and both could dazzle with their passing; it was kinda overlooked that, more often than not, and particularly in big game, Joey was the finisher. You could see glimpses of the problems to come when Neumann badly disrupted Plattsburgh's cycling game in the playoffs and Wilson stepped it up to keep the Cards in it with two goals, but the full impact wasn't realized until the following season's refrain of "Why can't they score?" began to pour down.

Really, if you want the last example of a single Cardinal player - rather than an entire offense - who spent four years making goalies think "Not this guy again" (with the exception of Brendon Hodge, whose overall impact was limited by an apparent lack of desire to expand beyond his niche role), you may well have to go back as far as Steve Moffat.

Jeff Paluseo and Jason Kilcan...It seems like the Cards every year had two players or so that would scare the bejesus out of you as an opposing fan.

Gaetan D'Anjou by far the most prolific scoring machine in Cardinal History . no direspect to Piromalli, Pereira and Ferras , but by far the greatest card scorer ever

Also one of only three DIII players with a 50-goal season since the beginning of the '80s: 50 in 40, '81-'82 (interestingly enough, the other two are both Lakers: Mike Snell and Sean Fitzgerald). Plus my father's told me pretty much the same thing on multiple occasions, so I don't doubt you in the least.

Random tidbit to throw out while we're talking about really good Cardinals: Plattsburgh holds the #2 career spot for both PPG and SHG. Joey Ferras scored 60 goals on the powerplay (particularly impressive since Piromalli, who played with him for 3 out of 4 years, is right behind him with 55), and the always excellent Lenny Pereira notched 14 shorties.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Only one player in the past 11 years has come close to scoring a goal a game in a season, and that was Joey Wilson getting 24 goals in 28 games in 08-09. That's a better ratio than hodge, friel, or anyone else put up as far back as collegehockeystats goes.

Satim and Clarke are the only 2 on this year's team to average a *point* per game over their careers.

Yeah, I just kind of skirted over that aspect of the post and went with "good goal scorers" in general, as that is, indeed, quite a lofty standard. In fact, if you look at the current NCAA record book (available here for anyone interested), it appears that a player who mustered at least 1.02 goals per game over his career would be among the top 25 in DIII history :)

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

To me Joey Ferras is the Wayne Gretzky of Division 3 hockey has records that might never be broken, I can't see a D3 player getting 100 pts in a single season right now (Ferras had 99 in 37 games in 87-88 I know not the record but to reach his career points they would almost have to do that each year). Right now Clarke is a Joey Wilson type player without the sniping ability, they both grind both had a knack to find a lose puck and put it in but Wilson had the ability to be say at the top of the circle and put the puck on net where Clarke can do that but not as consistently. I agree with Emery about Jensen he is a big strong player I would say a Jerome Iginla type player not a true sniper but can score a ton,the same goes for Ryan Craig. Satim I would say he is a Pavel Datsyuk player can dangle around you with ease and pull the D with him then give a nifty pass to the open wing and has a little bit of a scoring touch. Jobb is going to take Satim's spot as the dangler of the team, Jensen and Craig are the big power point producers now to find that elusive sniper to put with them. They also need that big Defense men to go along with Cody Adams to help push people out of the slot and tie them up.

It's D III hockey. what are you guys smoking? You talk about these guys like they were the Montreal Canadiens of the '70's. Your lucky they even play. They get nothing out of it. They pay tuition to play there then they are abused as if they were making millions in the NHL. Take a ride to the Bell Centre and stop treating student athletes like mercenary pros. D III hockey is basically a high level men's league and the only guy making any money is the coach.

Sorry, a little late - but enjoy ...

Cards host Middlebury - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/1/2011}

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey hasn't had much time to get over a disappointing weekend.

But, after difficult home losses to Cortland (2-0) and Oswego (4-3), the Cardinals need to move on and get ready for tonight's final non-conference game of the season — a 7 p.m. contest with Middlebury College at the Stafford Ice Arena.

And, while Cardinals' head coach Bob Emery wishes the outcome of this past weekend's game were different, one thing he wouldn't change is the fan support.

"The atmosphere was great against Oswego," he said. "I've always said our fans are the greatest in Division III hockey. Even when the students aren't here in session, we still get more support than any other program. We have the best of both worlds.

"Unfortunately, we didn't come up with a win for them. We know some of the fans were waiting in line for tickets. Our players enjoy the fans' support and we can use all the support we can get against Middlebury."

The Cardinals (13-6-1 overall), who are having all kinds of problems against State University of New York Athletic Conference teams, are unbeaten thus far (7-0-1) against non-league opponents.

"I can't knock the effort of our players over the weekend," said Emery. "We're coming off two real tough losses. But, we have to put those losses behind us and there's nothing we can do about them now.

"We need to put together a complete game, working hard, being disciplined and keep the puck out of our net. We need to let the offense take care of itself.

"This is a nice opportunity for us to go unbeaten in our non-league games. It just goes to show you the SUNYAC is getting stronger and stronger every year."

Middlebury (8-5-3), which competes in the NESCAC, started slowly.

The Panthers, however, have lost just once in their last 11 games (7-1-3) and have won four games in a row. This past weekend, Middlebury posted wins at Colby (4-1) and at Bowdoin (4-2).

"Middlebury is always a good team in the second half," said Emery. "It takes a while for their players to learn their system."

The Panthers are getting balanced scoring, led by two junior forwards — Martin Drolet (8-8-16) and Charlie Strauss (7-9-16).

Middlebury has used three goaltenders, with junior John Yanchek (6-1-2, 2.07) in net for nine of its games.

The Cardinals have four conference games remaining on the schedule and are on the road this weekend for a Saturday contest at Morrisville, with Plattsburgh State looking to avenge an earlier 3-2 home loss to the Mustangs.

"After the Middlebury game, we only have four games left in the (regular) season and three of them are on the road," said Emery.

Seriously nobody is saying or treating these guy's like they are mercenary pro's we are talking about players who we have seen play and have done well in college hockey. These guy's played Junior hockey in the same leagues as D1 and Major Junior players and many will turn pro he or overseas just like many D1 players and Major Junior players. In my last post yes I compared players to NHL players but only in the way they play the game not skill wise.
