Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

I agree completely were losing in my opinion 2 of our best offensive talents in a while with Clarke and Satim. But I can see Jensen being good for us.

Jensen is a stud and Craig is quietly having a great semester , but losing Clarke and Satim ,and what appears to be a lack of recruiting snipers over the past 3 seasons concerns me.

However after speaking to one of the players on the team he feels that if the Cards beat Middlebury and win the rest of their conference games they will get in. I dont completely disagree with him, the Cards would be 8-0-1 in non conference games and finish the year off with a record of 18-6-1.
With a high ranked strength of schedule.

Only time will tell....

This sounds exactly like the Oswego players' train of thought during my time at Oswego.

They were always worried about the at-large bid rather than just taking care of business on the ice.

Well, the logic of it makes sense. 18-6-1, 8-0-1 in NC games, pretty darn good SOS. Yeah, they'd have a pretty good shot at an at-large. But that's assuming no major upsets in conference tournaments, even the SUNYAC. Say USM and Fredonia win their respective conference tournaments. Now you've got Oswego, Plattsburgh, Castleton, Norwich, either Manhattanville or Elmira, and either St. Norbert or Superior, all vying for the 3 Pool C slots... and even if they run the table from here on, but fall short in the conference finals, I'd have to say Plattsburgh would end up with a not so fortuitous result in that situation.

Win the SUNYAC and remove any doubt , no easy task. Oswego gets in either way . Its in my opinion the only way Plattsburgh wont need major help otherwise . Now having said that do I think Plattsburgh is capable of being in the mix with with the rest of the nation , sure do thats why the circumstances **** me off so much.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

How about Ryan Craig? In nine games played he has 3 goals and 7 assists for 10 points. He's 9th on the team in scoring (points) and he's only played less than half the overall games by far this season. I think he's been a great asset to the team, especially on the power play.

Comments?

He is an effortless contributor , he is smart and smooth , I like him and as I said above "Craig is quietly having a great semester " . I like him , he is a very controlled contibutor , though I can tell he may have little mean streak in him , not sure though

I like Roytman also, I have a good feeling about his long term contributions , any thoughts on Barry Roytman

You're correct. I think Oswego ended with that exact record of 18-6-1 before and was left out. If I've learned one thing in all my years following D-III hockey, it's simply that there is ALWAYS going to be at least one upset in the conference tournaments. So it's tough to rely on putting all your marbles in the at-large basket when that happens every year.

As a fan back then, I just wish they would have had more confidence in their abilities to beat Plattsburgh rather than relying on the at-large bid in case they lost. Which they always did in my years.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Is it possible to play well and not win a game? Of course it is. Did Plattsburgh do that twice this weekend? Yeah, they really did. That gets them nothing in the standings, and Coach Emery knows that, but to not acknowledge they played well when they did doesn't seem to make much sense either. That said, they were ahead in Saturday's game because Oswego was accomodating with some undisciplined penalties. They lost Saturday's game because they returned the favor in the third period when it counted most. IT's great that they only have 9.whatever minutes in penalties a game, but if seven of them occur in the third period of a tight game you have to win...

couldnt agree more....also you CANNOT take penalties in your offensive zone

I wouldn't consider Barry an offensive defencemen. However, I've noticed that he has above average talent in terms of stick handling skills. He carries the puck well through the neutral zone. Sometimes he's not afraid to step-in on the rush. I think he has a promising future at Plattsburgh State.

True, we do lose alot but we have been in this situation many, many times. What about when we lost Joey Wilson, Riley Hill, B. Hodge, Moffit, Palusio? We bounced back. I agree that Jenson and Craig are going to be really good for us and with Steve's connections recruiting, I think we'll be o.k. I know times are tough right now, but the coaches have an eye for those potentially good players who fit well into our system. I've been watching this stuff for twenty plus years and I still feel confident with Bob and Steve at the helm.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Watching the games this weekend (especially against Oswego) I was impressed with Daniel Cobb and Zach Hepler 2 guys who have not got a lot of playing time but I feel played really well given the situation I know they made some mistakes but I know I saw Helper make some nice steals as Oswego tried to enter the zone that lead to some good offensive chances. As for the future in Goal Leis will be here next year depending on recruiting depends if he is the starter, I think you will see Williams (his GF is a senior) and Foley gone next year, Defense needs depth and lots of it, Offense we need a couple of snipers but I hope they do not go the route of getting a bunch of transfers get a couple of raw snipers and mold them. Jensen is the player to build around the next couple of years just hope we don't get put in a situation like a few years ago when Hince left because most of their recruiting is almost done and they are going that only the seniors are leaving unless somebody else has said they will be transferring.

The Hince situation came to your mind, the Pier-Luc Belanger came to mine - but either way, I agree, I hope Jensen is here to stay.

Didn't have time to catch Behind the Bench. Anyone willing to put up a synopsis of Emery's take on the weekend and the state of affairs of Cardinal hockey?

You can listen to the replay any time here - requires Free RealPlayer - available here.

But here as short synopsis.

Emery said he was “more frustrated than mad”.

Ducky says he felt they played “very, very well against Cortland”, Emery said they controlled the puck for 45 of the 60 minutes.

Emery said that if Cortland goaltender Brittan Kuhlman chest protector wasn’t broken in before the game, it is now.

Emery, says the Cardinal’s don’t have any “pure, pure, pure, goal scorers”.

Emery says they haven’t been out played all year, the game in Oswego might have been the close, but they nevertheless played ok there.

Emery said that while he is not happy with Jared Docking’s major penalty, we is least upset with it, as it was consistent Docking’s style of play, and he really just has to learn to “play smarter”.

Emery – “We have a hard time winning against ok teams with great goalies”.

Emery says, “the team that outplays the other team, doesn’t always win”.

Emery thinks they are going to stream all their remaining games.

Thanks Norm. Lots of content there. Do you think either Satim or Clarke will take offense to the "no pure goal scorer" comment? It would be interesting to find out if Emery thought that/felt that way at the begining of the season. Or did guys just not develop the way he had anticipated?

I would consider Clarke a "pure goal scorer". He has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He's also good at creating scoring opportunities.

12 goals (7 of which are power play goals) in 20 games....I'm not sure that's a "pure goal scorer". When was the last time Plattsburgh had a guy play nearly every game and average a goal a game?
