Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

“Let’s put up guillotines and scaffolds up on Red Square. We have 35 people in the squad.— Let’s finish them all off.”

-Russian Olympic head coach Vyacheslav Bykov's prediction of Russia's reaction after hockey team's Olympic performance

On to the NCAAs: Cards get at-large bid (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 3/8/10)

"We've had an up-and-down season, with a lot of adversity," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We had player suspensions, illnesses and injuries. We lost four of our top six defensemen, our goaltender and top two scorers from last year.

"Plus, we've played the toughest schedule in the country (in Division III), with almost all the more difficult games on the road. So, we can't ask for much more. Here we are — three games away from winning a national title."

"The only other circumstance would have been if we would have finished ahead of Middlebury," said Emery. "That way we could have played them at home in front of our fans.

"But, we're still playing close to home and it's a pretty good draw. They're a tough team, but we split two games with them this year. It could be a lot worse draw for us."

"We can learn a lot from the Oswego game," Emery said. "We know we have to do a better job keeping the puck out of our net. Those was the most goals we have given up in a game this year."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

If it is tickets for the Middlebury-Plattsburgh game, there are no assigned seats.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Midd has stadium style seating like Plattsburgh, but they don't assign what seats you have to sit in. even for season ticket holders, they can't save their seat for each game, if they want a specific seat they have to get there early enough to get it.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Certainly the NCAA deserves accolades for limiting the exploitation of Division III hockey players (aka Student Athletes) to a barely sustainable 25 game schedule. Look what has happened to these poor children.

Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican March 12, 2010:

Jr Cards enter state tourney
PLATTSBURGH — The Jr Cards will head to Binghamton this weekend to participate in the Tier II squirt hockey New York State Championships.

Members of the team include Gavin Giroux, Chase Bedore, Ian Urquhart, Brendan Whalen, Kurtis Olsen, Joshua McCauley, Kade Collins, Luke Carpenter, Christian Thomas, JB Chapin, Paul Fine-Lease and Cole Harvey. The players come from area youth hockey organizations including Plattsburgh, Lake Placid, Chazy, Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake.

The Jr Cardinals are a first year organization and are 47-4-3.

Cards know way to Placid (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 3/13/10)

Bob Emery says his Plattsburgh State men's hockey team already has made a statement this season.

"Anytime you make the NCAA (Division III) Tournament, you've had a good year," Emery said. "We're one of eight teams remaining out of 76.

"We've had a pretty good year. We're in the same ballpark we were in a year ago — one win away from Lake Placid."

Plattsburgh State, which dropped a 6-3 contest at Oswego in last weekend's SUNYAC Tournament title game, received an at-large bid into the national tournament.

"We didn't use the backdoor in getting into the tournament," Emery said. "Rather, I look at it the other way around.

"We're in the tournament because of what we did over the course of the season, playing the toughest Division III schedule in the country."

"We've proven we can win on the road," Emery said. "We've had a lot of difficult road games this year to prepare ourselves for the playoffs.

"We need to take care of business. Middlebury knows a lot about us and we split with them this season."

The Panthers have been one of the hottest teams in Division III while winning 12 of their last 13 games, including the last nine in a row.

During the nine-game winning streak, Middlebury has outscored its opponents by a 42-16 margin, and has allowed two goals or less in eight of those games.

"Being strong on defense is the key," Emery said. "That's not what we were against Oswego.

"It will be a good skating game against Middlebury and a great game for the fans. It's a good-sized sheet and we started recruiting the type of players who can skate on rinks like this on the road."

Plattsburgh State and Middlebury split two regular-season meetings, with the Cardinals recording a 3-1 win in the first round of the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout at Norwich on Nov. 27. Then, on Feb. 2, the host Panthers skated to a 5-3 victory over the Cardinals.

"We have to play smart and be opportunistic," Emery said.

Defenseman Cody Adams is back and Emery will now have his entire team at his disposal. "We're going to be at full strength for the first time all season," Emery said.

Cards put loss behind, focus on Middlebury (Excerpt from the Cardinal Points article from 3/12/10)

Despite the loss to Oswego, PSUC Head Coach Bob Emery is confident his team has put the loss in the back of their minds and is focused solely on the game against Middlebury.

Emery said the team has done a great job moving on from the loss.

“The team has done a great job of moving on (from the loss),” Emery said. “We have to use Oswego as a learning experience because we made some mistakes in that game that we have to learn from. Sports are all about learning from mistakes.”

The Panthers have now won 12 of their last 13 games and are on a nine-game winning streak.

“This has been a great year for this program, especially with an extremely young team,” Beaney said. “With only four seniors on the team, it is very gratifying to see such a young team mesh together as well as they have.”
PSUC came away victorious 3-1 in the first match up against Middlebury Nov. 27 in the semifinal game of the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout Tournament.

“Middlebury has a great coach, and it’s a great program with a rich tradition,” Emery said. “They are going to be tough, but when you get to the final eight, they are all tough opponents.”

Beaney and the Panthers will not be past PSUC just because of the win last month.

Plattsburgh is obviously one of the top teams in the country,” Beaney said. “In my eyes, they have almost no weaknesses. They play with good speed, they’re really disciplined, they have an outstanding defense, and they have a strong power play on both sides. Coach Emery does a great job of preparing and organizing his team.”

“Marty is definitely our best player on offense,” Beaney said. “He plays with great speed on both offense and defense, and he’s very intelligent with the puck. He’s a player who does it all.”

Sophomore Jon Yanchek leads the Panthers in goal with a .908 save percentage, a 2.30 GAA and a 13-2-2 overall record.

Emery realizes his team needs to play their best hockey against a strong opponent.

“It’s going to be tough (being on the road), no doubt,” Emery said. “But we have to show up with tons of emotion, play smart and keep the puck out of our net.”

“Of course, every team likes to play at home,” Beaney said. “You play on your own ice surface in front of your fans in a great atmosphere. The important thing for us is to not get too distracted with the hoopla surrounding this game and play smart hockey. These are two evenly-matched teams. A break one way or the other will make the difference.”

Cardinals reach Lake Placid (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 3/14/10)

All season long, the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team has played well against quality opponents on the road — only to end up losing a close game or settling for a tie.

It was a different story Saturday night.

"We saved our best game for last," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "The guys had a great attitude during the week and played real well tonight.

"Middlebury plays a different style, but we had a week to prepare for them. We had a lot of great chances to score, and I would have liked to see us be a little more opportunistic. But we were good on the rush."

The end came after Middlebury goaltender John Yanchek made a save on Kyle Taylor's shot. Docking kept going to the net and scored on the rebound in close when Yanchek couldn't cover the puck.

"We won the draw and Taylor got the shot on goal," Docking said. "We're told to crash the net and I was lucky he wasn't able to cover it. I saw the puck loose in his pads and got to it.

"It's the biggest goal I've ever scored."

"We had some chances when it was 2-1," Emery said. "They scored on the power play, but we had a chance on our power play late in the game."

"We stayed confident after they tied it," Docking said. "The attitude was good in the locker room before the overtime. We felt we had outplayed them and just needed to keep working."

Leis finished with 21 saves for the Cardinals, who held a 31-23 shot advantage.

"Leis did a good job — he held them to two goals," Emery said. "Going in, we knew we had to keep the puck out of our net. I thought we played real well in our zone and did a great job breaking the puck out of our zone.

"It's a nice win for us. I've said all along we're a work in progress."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

What a workman like effort from the entire program last night. This group of athletes are pure "blue collar gems ".

The argument can be made that this is the "least talented "of the final four teams but I have no doubt in my mind that this team will come with a "we can win attitude " because I think the collective work effort is very troubling to more talented opponents.

Wick , here we come again . Everyone in the country knows you are the more talented team ........... no pressure though :D :D

Lets get every able bodied fan of Cardinal Hockey in the stands Friday night , tell your friends , your neighbors , anybody who will listen about this
group of hard working gritty grinders who have made it to the final 4 despite being too young and not as talented as the rest of the remaining teams.

Lets blow the roof off the Herb Brooks Arena Friday , get people off the couch , do it .......call your friends ,

These guys deserve it

Brains key reason for Cards' run (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 3/15/10)

PLATTSBURGH — Playing smart hockey has put the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team into this weekend's Final Four in Lake Placid.

The Cardinals kept their season going when Jared Docking's goal at 3:19 of sudden-death overtime lifted Plattsburgh State to a 3-2 victory over Middlebury College in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals at Chip Kenyon Arena Saturday night.

"A big part of the reason why we did so well was because we played smart," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery on Sunday. "We played hard as well.

"It was our best game of the year. It was a game between two pretty evenly-matched teams and we picked a good time to have a good game."

Middlebury, down 2-0 at one time, forced overtime with a goal with 7:01 left in regulation.

"The attitude on the bench was real good," said Emery. "Even we they tied it, 2-all, the players didn't get too down on the ice and in the lockerroom."

The Final Four semifinals at the Herb Brooks Arena on Friday has Oswego (26-2) against St. Norbert 23-3-3) at 4 p.m., followed by Plattsburgh State (19-5-4) versus Norwich (24-1-4) at 7:30 p.m.

The national championship game is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday.

"Four of the top five ranked teams in the country will be there," said Emery. "It goes to show the system works. Middlebury was ranked fourth and we were fifth, but it was real close between us two.

"It's exciting for the guys on our team — from the veterans to the newcomers. I'm really happy for our players because they did a good job buying into what we wanted to do. It's also a close game and a treat for our fans."

Norwich and Plattsburgh State have already met twice this season, both at Kreitzberg Arena, with the Cadets winning in a shootout in the finals of the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout and then skating to a 4-1 victory.

"We can't be just happy to be there," said Emery. "Norwich is tough at home and we haven't beaten them this season. We're looking forward to playing them on neutral ice."
