Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey - 2009/2010

sooo lets say plattsburgh and oswego make it to the finals... would there be any opportunity for bagels and tennis balls being thrown after the first goals? just wondering because it is on neutral ice and i dont think in the hands of the colleges themselves... i could be wrong. just a thought... and no im not bringing anything to throw... not risking the chance of platty losing their National Championship

Cards exceeding expectations (Excerpt from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 3/18/10)

One game can change the perception of a season.

That was indeed the case last Saturday night when Jared Docking's overtime goal lifted the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team to a 3-2 win at Middlebury College in the NCAA Division III tournament quarterfinals.

"Just making it to the tournament is so hard," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "When you get there and then win like we did in Middlebury, it becomes so rewarding. It deems the season a success.

"But we can't be satisfied. Only one team is going to be happy at the end of the weekend. If you win a national championship, it makes the spring and summer that much better to enjoy, and the players have memories they can talk about forever."

The Cardinals establish lofty goals every season, but even Emery is a little bit surprised by this group.

"Considering what we lost last year, we have gone above expectations," he said. "We lost two of our top four scorers in Joey Wilson, who had 24 goals last season, and Riley Hill, who had 14. Plus, we lost four of our top six defensemen.

"Then, we find out in March we lost our SUNYAC Most Valuable Player, (goaltender) Bryan Hince, who decided not to come back. Now, we have to go out and find two goalies. Going in, this was one of our most uncertain teams in recent history.

"We had to focus more on keeping the puck out of our net. And we did a good job in that respect against Middlebury, and now we have to do the same in Lake Placid."

Emery credits Plattsburgh State's difficult schedule, with many of the tougher games on the road, in helping the Cardinals earn an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament.

"We tied Norwich and Elmira on the road and we beat Middlebury at a neutral site among our more difficult games," he said. "And we didn't have any hiccups against the teams we were expected to beat, except maybe for the tie with Potsdam."

"Playing the tough schedule is why we're in the tournament. But if we score five or six more goals, in some of those more difficult games, then we would be having an unbelievable season."

If you are pimping your players after a semi-final game to boost party attendance, are you expecting to win?

Pre-game tailgating in Green Bay is a pro sport on it's own - if it wasn't so warm they would have it on the lake and drill some holes to catch appetizers...:D :D :D

No pressure on Cardinals (Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 3/19/10)

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team finds itself just one win away from playing for the NCAA Division III Tournament championship.

All that stands in the way of the Cardinals and a berth in the title contest is the No. 1-ranked team in the country, which has lost only once in 29 games this season.

Plattsburgh State (19-4-5) takes on Norwich (24-1-4) tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the NCAA Division III Tournament Final Four semifinals at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.

The first game of the day has Oswego (26-2) opposing St. Norbert (23-3-3) at 4 p.m. The national championship game is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Norwich, Oswego and St. Norbert and ranked 1-2-3, respectively, in the Division III poll, while Plattsburgh State is fifth.

"No one is giving us a chance to win and there's no pressure on us," said Emery. "We have nothing to lose going in."

The Cadets and Cardinals skated to a 1-all tie at Kreitzberg Arena in the championship game of the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout on Nov. 28 before Norwich won the title in a shootout.

Then, on Jan. 5 at Kreitzberg Arena, the Cadets recorded a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals.

"We played real well the first time against them," Emery said. "We turned the puck over too much the second time. We did that only twice during the regular season and that was one of those times."

At least the Cardinals get the Cadets, who were 17-0-2 at home this season, away from Kreitzberg Arena and on neutral ice.

"Playing in a big rink will help us," Emery said. "We will need to play smart and we can't get caught running around. Goaltending and defense will be key.

"Norwich plays a style somewhat similar to Middlebury. We had a week to prepare for Middlebury and it's the same with Norwich."

Mike McShane is getting some big offensive stats from his freshmen.

Three of Norwich's top four scorers are freshmen, including Blake Forkey (15-22-37), who leads the team in points.

Classmate Kyle Thomas is the leading goal scorer on the team with 23. The Cadets have nine players with 20 points or more.

The Cadets have outscored their opponents, 142-40, and senior Ryan Klingensmith has been outstanding in net with a 22-1-3 record and a sparkling 1.31 goals-against-average.

The Cardinals have outscored their opponents, 123-57, and Plattsburgh State has four players with 22 points or more and 15 with 11 or more. The Cardinals are led by junior Dylan Clarke (12-17-29), junior Eric Satim (11-15-26), sophomore Kyle Kudroch (14-8-22) and senior Andrew Willock (6-16-22). Junior Dan Sliasis has tallied 10 goals.

Two freshmen — Ryan Williams (10-2-1, 2.16 gaa) and Josh Leis (9-3-3, 1.71 gaa) — are Plattsburgh State's goaltenders.

Leis was in net for the Cardinals' 3-2 overtime win at Middlebury last Saturday in the NCAA Division III Tournament quarterfinals.

Norwich, meanwhile, held a 39-13 shot advantage in its quarterfinal contest against Elmira. But, it was 1-0 Elmira until Steven Schroeder forced overtime with 48 seconds remaining after Klingensmith was pulled for an extra attacker. Pier-Oliver Cotnoir then won it with 2:12 gone in overtime.

Oswego vs.
St. Norbert

Oswego was the Division III 2007 national champion, and St. Norbert won it all in 2008.

The Lakers are the most prolific scorers in this year's tournament, having found the back of the net 151 times in 28 games this season.

They enter the weekend coming off a 9-2 blowout victory over Bowdoin in the quarterfinals after defeating Plattsburgh for the SUNYAC crown.

St. Norbert's postseason journey continues thanks to a tight 3-1 victory over Gustavus Adolphus last weekend.

The Green Knights, who beat the Cardinals in the 2008 championship game, owe their success to stout defense. St. Norbert hasn't lost in 12 games and is the only team in the Final Four that had to travel by plane.

I knew St. Norbert was nothing without the Blue Devils ;)

And those dang Minnesota teams.

Cards' rally falls short (Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 3/20/10)

LAKE PLACID — Plattsburgh State, as it has all season, battled to the end Friday night.

However, the Cardinals have had their problems putting the puck in the net against quality teams and that was more of the case against Norwich in the NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Tournament semifinals at the Herb Brooks Arena Friday night.

Steve Coon's goal midway through the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Cadets held off the Cardinals, 3-2, to advance to today's 5 p.m. national championship game against St. Norbert.

Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery was more disappointed with the three goals the Cardinals allowed.

"I've said all along we're a work in progress," he said. "Tonight, we played well enough to win and I felt we played our two best games of the season in the last two.

"We have two freshman goalies who lacked experience going into the season. But, they did a hell of a job for us all year. We knew going in that we had to keep the puck out of our net. We can't let two soft goals in — and we let two soft goals in tonight. But, our goalie (Josh Leis), on the other hand, made some great saves."

The Cadets (25-1-4) took a 1-0 lead at 5:24 of the first period. Craig Serino's high shot bounced off Leis, over his shoulder and rolled slowly over the line.

"I took a quick slapshot, it went off his blocker and I just stood and watched," Serino said. "It fell to the ice and trickled in."

"We played a good first period and I felt we could have had a couple of more goals," said Norwich head coach Mike McShane. "Their goalie (Leis) made some great saves."

But the Cardinals evened it 7:07 into the second off some good work behind the Norwich net. Andrew Willock took a pass in front and beat Norwich goalie Ryan Klingensmith.

The Cadets then got a big goal late in the second to move in front for good. Pier-Oliver Cotnoir skated just over the blue line and sent a bullet past Leis with just 56 seconds remaining in the period.

"I felt Plattsburgh State was outplaying us in the second period and that was a great shot," McShane said.

Plattsburgh State (19-6-4) pressed for the equalizer in the third, but it was Norwich that grabbed a 3-1 advantage at 8:09. Coon, who was stationed near the boards, scored on a shot that Leis would like to have back.

The Cardinals didn't quit and made it interesting when defenseman Mike Kavanagh got the puck straight on between the slots and pulled Plattsburgh State to within one at 13:30.

Leis then made a huge save later on to keep the Cardinals in it, but Plattsburgh State couldn't get the tieing goal.

"I thought we had a chance to tie it right up until the final buzzer," Emery said. "I thought our fitness showed in the third period.

"Our defense did a great job moving the puck. Their first goal was bad puck management on our part. But, I thought we battled back well and did a good job cycling tonight."

Norwich held a 35-31 advantage in shots on goal, with Klingensmith finishing with 29 saves and Leis, 32.

"We have a rivalry with Plattsburgh," Klingensmith. "When you don't like a team, you want to beat them even more than a regular game."

"Tonight, we had some great attacks," Emery said. "We had some good looks.

"We didn't get that big play tonight — that big goal we've gotten in the past. Norwich has six good defensemen — all with good size. I think their defense is No. 1 in the country."

"In the end, it just didn't go our way," said Plattsburgh State forward Dylan Clarke. "Late in the game, when you're down, you try to press a little more. We got some breaks on it, some turned out to be good scoring chances and some didn't."

The Cardinals went winless against the Cadets in three tries this season, losing one game in a shootout in the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout and two in regulation.

Klinger lost some respect from me on this one:

"We have a rivalry with Plattsburgh," Klingensmith. "When you don't like a team, you want to beat them even more than a regular game."

To each his own, but I still hope Norwich pulls of a victory for the CCCP.

A work in progress - three more years to go :D
