Plans for UConn hockey outdoor game

Re: Plans for UConn hockey outdoor game

wouldn't they be better off trying to get you guys in that game? rather than SH?

Yes, them or Yale. Sacred Heart is mind boggling, but as was already posted, the college games are only a small part of what Baldwin is throwing out there. I still dont see this as terribly attractive, but at least he's ambitious.

Re: Plans for UConn hockey outdoor game

I would love to see this event succeed, but I have a hard time envisioning more than 3,000 fans showing up to watch UConn play Sacred Heart in February in a 40,000+ seat football stadium in East Hartford. The optics of this huge virtually empty stadium are likely going to backfire and make UConn hockey look even more bush league than the current perception.

I would rather see them spend the money to upgrade UConn hockey - not make a mockery of it.

I think the problem of vision is one in terms of Baldwin. My guess is that UConn is paying little or no money for this. Honestly, for UConn it isn't worth it to pay for it. When they played at the Boston (TD Banknorth) Garden it was at least as a hypothetical "dry run" for a Hartford regional.

The bigger problem is the schedules are set... and even if they weren't... I'm not sure who you would get for a non-televised outdoor one-off. Lets not forget one of the bigger lures of an event like this is the attention received. I mean, how many of us watched at least some part of the first UM-MSU outdoor game.

duh! absolutely, Yale may even make it a success at the gate but from what's being posted here, it has not much to do with U Conn hockey and that's a shame

Re: Plans for UConn hockey outdoor game

and there is ZERO chance BC would ever do it..... no way they would ever help UConn grow it's hockey program

Why not? I think BC would relish the opportunity to destroy a UConn team. Either way, its a horrible idea.

Brown vs. Providence at Brown Stadium. Outdoor Mayor's Cup. Do it...do it...

i think because CT is such a huge area for BC recruiting wise that a successful UConn hockey program isn't in their best interests. Playing UConn in hockey is a lose-lose kinda thing for BC , no?

There's zero incentive for BC to waste an OOC game on UConn. Theres a .001% chance they'll be a tuc, the game will not help their rpi, in fact it a win would likely have to be stricken from the record because of it bringing down their number. i think the recruiting thing doesnt mean as much because UConn is light years away from recruiting at the level of any top level Hockey East team. Plus the BC AD absolutely despises UConn in every way.

At this point things are rather limited, as schedules (including the very limited number of noncons) have basically been set. It's just basically "Hmmm, who will UConn be playing that weekend...OK, Sacred Heart it is."

There is zero chance of any of that happening. In the event that a bad team like Uconn would beat BC, it still wouldn't be a big deal since it's just 1 game and Uconn will still be an afterthought to any talented player in the Nutmeg State minutes after even an unlikely Uconn win. In March Uconn will still be nothing and BC will still be running roughshod through the playoffs.

Short-term and long-term remifications are just so minimal that BC would not have to worry at all about losing a CT player to Uconn.

And as mentioned, BC would have to waste a precious OOC game against a team that BC has no incentive in playing because of the RPI/PWR ramifications.

lets also not forget that recruiting tends to be national (US & Canada) these days... if you're in the hockey scene is not like you haven't heard of Boston College. Frankly, I don't know why this conversation is stuck on them. It would be the other schools that might be looking for some exposure in CT.

UConn has had difficulty recruiting in Connecticut as it is... mostly because everybody knows that the coach is an idiot who over-recruits the number of players expecting the other ones he brought in during previous years to wash out. I've seen enough to know that the coach would have been fired if UConn respected itself.

If you are coming to UConn you're there to play hockey and to get an education. Frankly, I always thought that UConn would get CT players just due to in-state rates... but then you have to realize the coach and the program IS JUST THAT BAD.

well, some never thought UConn football would ever get this good so fast( i didn't) and it did , and yes GDF isn't doing much with UConn for a while if ever and the reverse is most likely true as well, the ACC issue made sure of that

Re: Plans for UConn hockey outdoor game

Is this a joke? Why would BC consider doing this for those a-holes at UConn? This is the school that sued BC when they went to the ACC for 'destroying the Big East' and now trying to get out of the Big East themselves. Screw them.

This whole thing is moot because Boston College won't be doing this anyways.

I dont think a UConn hockey program poses a threat to BC

BC, whether you like them or not, is the preeminent program in the nation right now. It would take a national program to make something like that a success, especially since BC is also local to the area.

Umm UCONN isn't the a-hole in that case. BC, Miami, and V-Tech are the a-holes.

Hahahahahahaha. Yea, they are real jerks for leaving a terribly run conference for a better one.

Did you read recently about the ridiculous television contract that the ACC has just secured with ESPN? Meanwhile, the Big East is worried about getting poached again and disintegrating in football. Maybe they can join with the MAC football conference and become the Big Mac if McDonald's is ok with the copyright infringement.

The state of Connecticut really had a fantastic month of May comeuppance.

- ACC signs reported deal with ESPN for television rights (12 years, 1.86 billion... or 155M a year). Higher than was projected weeks earlier.
- Big Ten rumors swirl and Uconn could be left behind for RUTGERS (yes, RUTGERS!). Meanwhile Uconn is absolutely dying to jump ship from the Big East, which is funny since they sued some people for doing that.
- CT AG Dickie Blumenthal gets destroyed for lying about serving in Vietnam. He was the main dbag in the Big East/Uconn lawsuit.
- Uconn hoops and their dbag coach get slammed with NCAA violations. And the best part is that the Chair for the NCAA's Committee on Infractions is none other than Miami's former AD Paul Dee (sued by Uconn). God Bless America!

First of all, thank you for bringing the class I've come to expect out of a supporter of Boston College.

Second of all, I don't particularly care that they are the preeminent program in the nation. The talk of getting Boston College involved is stupid because Boston College would have no interest in such a thing. Its a dead line of thought that goes nowhere.

Third of all, its usually the lower flight of schools that look to play games for specific recruiting needs... such as one-offs in Minnesota or Michigan. I know Lowell has done it... I can't imagine why a top level school would need a high profile game in Connecticut.

Please, UConn lost the ability to use the "class card" when I saw a 10 year old kid get beer poured on him at Rentawreck Stadiium at a Uconn football game. UConn makes West Virginia fans look like Harvard fans.

Nothing personal, but UConn is a joke.

Learn the facts. BC, Miami, and Tech bailed once the Big East wanted to go to a 16 team megaconference by bringing in academic scum like Louisville.

So how you justify UConn's desire to bail on the Big East now? I guess its ok for UConn to do whats best for them but not BC?

Who is looking for exposure in CT? Isn't it Uconn that is hoping to raise their own profile in their own state? And wouldn't that best be served by getting interest in the program by playing a powerhouse rather than a nobody that won't get any attention? The local schools in New England that can help Uconn do that would be BC or BU. BC especially because of profile of the overall athletic program BC brings to the table to help generate interest and the fact that the two schools once belonged to the same conference for a while.

Powerhouses from outside the area aren't looking for exposure in CT because it's outside their footprint. And they also have so much to lose that a BC or BU would as has been outlined a few posts back.

Lesser programs... while they'd love to get exposure in CT, it won't help. The good talent (Drury, Shannon, Wilson, Smith) will head to BC or BU whether this game includes them or not.

So I think the discussion is about BC because it's what would help Uconn most and has the most potential to help make this game successful. No? Sure it isn't going to happen, but it's obvious the talk about Uconn-Sacred Heart isn't very exciting (which kind of makes the point).

Understanding it's just a small part of a bigger thing, there's really no benefit Uconn can get from playing in this. That's all. But here's a thread, so people are going to talk about something in relation to this subject.
