Penn State Womens Hockey

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Also would be interested in hearing others take on the stripe running down the middle of the helmets... personally they look dumb to me and are distracting when watching the game.. They couldn't just stick with the simple Nittany Lion logo on the side?

LMAO. DC had the game on and the first thing I said when I looked over her shoulder was "Please tell me that isn't a football helmet stripe on their lids." I agree. Penn State might want to actually spring for stickers for the sides (great logo they have) and ditch the stripe. Then they should concentrate on the football uniforms and bring them into the 20th century.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

This is pretty harsh criticism for a program 2 games into its existence. Perhaps give the ladies a little time to acclumate to a new level of hockey. It's going to be a long year for you if you have this negative a view on things already... relax, enjoy the games. Penn State is very young and seemed smaller than the UVM team. How about giving the ladies a chance? (No, I am not a parent, just a proud alum!!!)

Well, a series split is better than getting swept in an inaugural weekend, but there is a lot of work to be done by this new and young Penn State team....a lot of work. It's hard to critique anything out of a program's first series in its history, because there's no doubt the coaches were trying a lot of different things to get a feel for what might work and what won't, on a team with 17 freshmen. Vermont was a good opponent for a series like that, as they played with a very short bench and aren't exactly a powerhouse. There were flashes of talent from these freshmen, for sure, but there's definitely work to be done.

Let's start with offense - they don't have any. They get the occasional offensive rush and then it's back to defense for what seems like the entire game. When they did manage to get the puck into the offensive zone, it was a free-for-all. It didn't look like there had been any preparation for setting up offensive plays, although the players with experience did show that they knew what should've been happening. One big problem is the same big problem they had with the club team last season - nobody in front of the net for rebounds, screens, generally harrassing the goalie, etc.

So let's try their defense. They should be pretty good at it, because they spent about 95% of the series on defense. That's understandable, all things considered, and it makes sense to focus on defense with a brand new program, knowing you're going to get hammered for most of a game. Still, they need to work on it. Vermont in the offensive zone always had two players on point, ready to set things up, with nobody covering them. Scrums along the boards drew too many Penn State players into the scramble, or drawn in too close to it, and it left Vermont with open players with the inevitable result - a whole lot of shots. Penn State did need to improve on their willingness to fight for a puck on the boards, and they did do that, but at the cost of covering the Vermont players who were set up on the points. I'm sure the coaches saw the same thing and will be working on that. In Penn State's defensive zone, there was just way too much open ice between Vermont players and Penn State players.

Special teams - weren't. The power play is non-existent. There was no conventional cycling of the puck to set up a play, no standard-looking "players on point" setup, etc. It was just a more crowded offensive rush that usually ended up back in their defensive zone again. There isn't much to say because there really isn't a power play to talk about.

Penalty kill - they were better at this because that's basically the game they played the whole series, even with very few penalties. They're not afraid to block shots, and did a lot of that successfully. The biggest trouble they had was clearing the puck on a penalty kill. They scramble for the puck, they block shots, but they have a hard time getting the puck out of the zone, so they never get a chance to catch their breath.

All in all, they have a good core of freshmen who showed flashes of talent and hockey smarts, and with good coaching they should be fine in their first season of D-1 play. It's way too early to evaluate them or write them off based solely on this first series of mostly defensive play. They've obviously worked on defense in the short preseason, and that will serve them well, because they definitely are going to get hammered all year. There are some good defenders, some good forwards, and we got to see two good goalies (one a freshman) who could be even better with a little help from their teammates. The coach has made a point of saying they want to be playing their best hockey by tournament time - the standard line from coaches - and they do have the players to be a good team by playoff time....if they're coached right.

D-1 hockey at Penn State has been a long time coming, and it was fun to finally see it start.

Exactly. As they say, you have to walk before you can run. Be thankful they are walking, and not crawling at this point.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Congrats to Penn State women's hockey on their historic first NCAA D1 victory. And here's a thumbs up for the stripe on the helmet - I personally like the old school look. I'm a fan of the Michigan helmet as well, guess I have a thing for stripes. Don't own a zebra though and would prefer the women's game with 3 striped jerseys on the ice instead of 4 :D

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Apparently you missed the last paragraph.

I didn't miss the last paragraph....it was getting through the first five (negative) paragraphs to get there... I'm not saying there can't be criticism, but ease up a little - it was only their first weekend together.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Apparently you missed the last paragraph.

Only if you read the whole novel, and it was a veil attempt to excuse the rest of the critical story. I'm with the others. First year program with one weekend in the book and a split. Time to celebrate that first historic victory, and let the team enjoy that moment, as opposed to an in depth breakdown of everything that they need to work on. The latter is the coaches job. Given them some time to develop the team before commenting.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Well, none of it was meant negatively, not that it matters. I've supported this team since it was a club program. I've looked forward to D-1 hockey here for a long time. I'm on a first-name basis with the coaches, the director of hockey operations, the SID, etc. I cheered along with everyone else here at Penn State last weekend, and I'll be cheering with them this weekend at the home opener series, too, win or lose. If you'd rather just say, "Good game", then do it. I'll break it down my way, and you can just skip reading it.

One more thing, since it's clear you can be critical, but unable to take criticism from others. My point was always analysis is fine....you wrote five paragraphs of everything wrong with the team before you got to two lines that were semi-hopeful for the future. Your screen name and tagline had me wondering if you are officially associated with the program. I don't think so, but if you are, you definitely need to ease up on the commentary. The coach is working on the things you mentioned. Let the ladies read mostly support of the team here....

Ya had me up until you dropped the "I'm on a first-name basis with the coaches, the director of hockey operations, the SID,........yada yada yada". It's not about you. Support the ladies and enjoy the first year of D1 hockey. I am sure if "Josh" needs hockey related feedback or advice, he will ask.........:D.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Well, It's on to Sacred Heart. Anyone know if they are going to streamlline to game? I looked on theior web site but couldn't find a link. The men's game is available.

No one left to critique the games, "PSUwonwensHockey" is no longer entering his line which I found very good. Some didin't.

Hopefully the Ladies can get a win tonite and /or tomorrow.

Although Sacred Heart may call themselves a D1 Independant, they are no where close to acting like one. They provide a link for Live Stats but don't provide anyone/anyway to make the link useful. Expet an update at the end of the game at best.

Well, Penn St lost to Sacred Heart 2-1. I expected PSU to have a tough year but their club team beat Sacred Heart last year.

A link is your criteria?

Sacred Heart just seems to be a strange team for whatever reason. Usually they lose to D-1 programs and have unimpressive results, but then they'll come up with a headscratcher every so often. Four years ago, they beat Maine 3-2, and then lost to the Black Bears 11-1 the next day. That same season, the Pioneers defeated Robert Morris 4-3 a day after getting thumped by the Colonials 8-1. A couple months later, Sacred Heart went on the road to Robert Morris and got swept 7-2 and 12-0. From what I can see, there isn't any rhyme nor reason to its results. If history repeats, expect a win of about 7-1 for Penn State in Saturday's rematch.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

A very astute observation ARM. I saw Sacred Heart play a couple of games last year. I would characterize their streaky record in that they come out hard and if they can hang with a team they can make it close and perhaps even get a win from time to time. If they get down, they get deflated and then tend to sag late, hence the lob sided scores.

I also agree it will be a very different game today.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Well so far it's been a rocky start for the PSU women's hockey team. Most of the time our girls have been outsized by the other team but they have given a remarkable accounting of themselves and by the end of several games they have been giving the ohter team more than they wanted. Robert Morris found that out in the last game and with a little luck, PSU could have won or at least tied the game.
We managed to win 3 out of 4 games against Sacred Heart but we should have won all four.
I think we will have a good outing this weekend against Lindenwood. Lindenwood has had a much tougher schedule than PSU but I think we will be good for at least one win. If our scorers show up and we can stay out of the penalty box we should be able to stay the course.
For those of you that didn't get to a home game, you don't have many chances left. It's hard to believe that the season is half over. We only have 3.5 series left at home the rest are on the road.
Those of you that have missed the tail-gate parties have missed some good food, especially the Lobster Bisque.
Please send calorie laden gift packages to all the players. We need the ballast.
