Penn st. Job?????

Re: Penn st. Job?????

What gets me, is that while they had a fantastic finish this year, and a Final 4 run in '03 (I think) he is a lifetime below .500 as a head coach. Is any other program out there, whether they have a coach under contract or have just released theirs been checking flight schedules to Duluth because they felt they had to lock up Scott Sandelin before someone else did? I highly doubt it.

Not counting his first 2 or 3 seasons, his record is above .500. Some of us forget, myself included, just how bad the first couple of year were. The last 3 years his winning percentage is almost .650.

And the Frozen Four run was in 2004.

Very true...if you take out just his first year, its .516 overall...if you take everything after the first Frozen 4 (4 below .500 years before this nice run of 20+ win seasons) he's at .504. To expect UMD to be at the top every year is crazy. Sandelin has done what any 2nd tier program can only hope for...the program will go up and down but minimizing the lows (always at least 10 wins after the first year), and maximizing the highs (five 20 win seasons, 3 NCAAs, 2 Frozen Fours and Championship). I think just about any program outside the perennial powers would gladly take the last 11 seasons that UMD had.

Very well put. The simple fact is that he has a lot of leverage after winning the national championship. He is a hot item and I don't blame him for attempting to get more money. I've heard from some very reliable sources that he's not looking for all that large a raise. He also would like to get his assistants paid more. I believe that the two assistant coaches have added significantly to the program. I believe they were big contributors to the success this season. I'd really hate to lose either one of them.

When I wrote my letter to the chancellor and Nielson I made sure to mention all three coaches when I talked about the need to retain the staff.

UMD fans, don't forget to write your letters too. There's still time to make your voice heard.

Now that Sandy has won a national championship I wonder if he will be on the short list to replace Lucia? Wouldn't that be funny if he replaced Lucia next year?

Um, if Sandy leaves, he's leaving for Penn State. If he doesn't, then he'll have a long contract with tUMD. So your dreams will have to wait.

Because we all know it is unheard of for college head coaches to leave for other college head coaching jobs. ;)

But I do agree with you on his options. Personally, I'll be surprised if it isn't Penn State.

Bah, contracts in college sports don't mean anything. For Minnesota to hire him he would need to have a winning record before they would ever consider him for an interview. Two coaches to watch are Seth Appert and Enrico Blasi.

Wow, Hammy, is that because of your inside info? Because this is the first I've heard of this! I live under a rock!

Sandelin isn't going to sign some piddly little 2 year contract at tUMD if he stays. So breaking a 5-7 year contract (which tUMD will HAVE to offer him as that's what PS will/has already offered) NEXT YEAR is ridiculous. Wherever he decides to go next (PS), the Gophers aren't going to lure him away. And as I said last year, he is SO not the right coach for UMTC.

Oh, Blasi? The guy who makes 300k at Miami through 2017? Miami has already shown they will do anything to keep him. They DOUBLED his pay. And where are we watching for Seth Appert to go? tUMD? He's not going to UMTC either.

Re: Penn st. Job?????

I know you realize that. Such tension...

Even if he stayed at UMD, I don't think he would have ever been looked at to replace Lucia. I think the next guy will be an alum.
