Patty Kazmaier 2022

Personally I think they should have three awards, one for each position group.
I agree. It takes a team to win a title, and a team is composed of separate but equally important parts. 3 awards would be a lot easier to agree on, and easier for the fan base to accept.

The goalies do have an award, I believe. But at least your method has a few people from the ECAC listed. Seems sketchy when a league that strong is entirely shut out. Something seems very off in how this is voted on or arrived upon.

Yeah, the Patty Kaz pickers don't like to choose goaltenders unless they're leading the country in save percentage (Frankel) or close to setting school records, or defenders unless they're in the top scorers conversation (Jaques leads Ohio State, Fontaine is 2 on Northeastern). They don't really like anyone on a team that's not an NCAA lock either.

The most notable ECAC players are probably Kaltounkova, who is a bit further down the scoring leaderboard, and Corinne Schroeder. Personally I feel Kaltounkova and McQuigge should have been additions with Gillis Frechette and Lucy Morgan worth noting.

But it doesn't have a 'name' attached to it, like the Kaz or like the men's goalie award.

('Jessie Vetter' is available, or 'Anne-Renee Desbiens'. I might even grudgingly go along with 'Noora Raty'. But seeing as how the men's award is already named for a Badger player, we may as well stay consistent with that.)

The Patty Kazmaier has become an award for the forward with the most points / top 3 for the best team. Patty Kazmaier was a defender, damn it.
To me, if Jaques doesn’t get it, it’s a travesty. The others are certainly great players but it’s expected the forwards will score and Frankel is not the best player in the country. What Jaques has done borders on historic and should be rewarded.

No, no and no again. You have your all conference teams, you have players who are All Americans. The other players get recognized in these awards. This award is the the best player in the country. Pick one. Pick the top player. Just friggin' do it.

"An award of The USA Hockey Foundation, the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award was established in 1998 and is presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey. Other selection criteria include outstanding individual and team skills, sportsmanship, performance in the clutch, personal character, competitiveness and a love of hockey. Consideration is also given to academic achievement and civic involvement."

Why no invites from Hockey Canada then?

Huh, interesting perspective about Watts. Are you implying that in order to be considered one of the top 10 hockey players this year you needed an invite from one of the national teams (Team Canada or Team USA)? That is more important than how you actually performed during the season?

Below is the roster of both the US and Canadian players invited to the pre-centralization camps in 2021. Watts was invited but couldn't participate because she leading the Badgers to the NCAA championship.

If your criteria is really that you must receive an invite from one of the national teams to be a top 10 college player and in the running for the Patty Kaz award, then the following players shouldn't be on the Patty Kaz list because they were not invited: Fontaine, Hughes, Jacques, O'Brien.

What about the 2 Europeans? Since they weren't invited to the US or Canadian camps, can they still be top 10?

Not really, I just want someone to say the quiet part out loud.

Two of the last five winners do not fit your description. Pretty good chance that it will be three out of six who do not fit your description.

Yeah I'm being hyperbolic, but it does seem like the nominees, and winners all skew towards the forwards to the extent where it seems like a lot of the award criteria is just ignored.

Then why don’t you say it? I believe I know what you are implying. If Mark Johnson, widely considered the most accomplished women’s hockey coach of all time, feels Daryl Watts is worthy of being one of his captains that is good enough for me

I can't figure out how to respond to the individual posts. But I disagree with TitleIXhockey's analysis and logic and list of players. Especially on the D and G list.

Anyway, after watching a ton of hockey, and loving it, I'd go with Jacques. Followed by Heise. And, then a hopper of amazing super women. In alphabetical order and with a WCHA bias: Giggure, Hughes, Watts.

Just another opinion.

I don't really have a strong opinion of who should win, not right now anyway. I don't have an InStat sub this year so I can't check some of the deeper numbers unless the conferences track them. (TOI, PP, PK time, etc.)

On the hockey side of things, off the cuff I like Casey O'Brien as the only underclasswoman on the list. Maybe Heise since Minnesota has been best when it mattered most in the WCHA.

I like Sophie Jaques's volunteer work though. https://www.pattykaz.com/news_article/show/1212603

Hit quote at the bottom of my post and you can yell at me all you want :) That said, I kind of agree with your list minus Watts.

Having seen all of the WCHA players in person, the one who impressed me the most was Taylor Heise. When she was on the ice you always kept an eye on her because she was so dangerous. I also agree that the top 2 are probably Heise and Jacques and that Jacques will probably win it.

Because they don't like her game or maybe even her personally. It doesn't mean she should be DQ'ed from the PK award, does it?

The problem is not the players, it's the voters. Who ever is voting for this thing aren't seriously considering D's and G's. And sometimes the way they vote they consider it more of a career award than a single season award. When ARD won as a Sr, per numbers as a Sr weren't as good as her Jr year. She should have won it it Jr year and not her Sr. year.

Clearly Jaques should win it (though 10 pf her goals are on the pp, does that devalue the quality of the goals? IDK), though Heise is 9 pts clear of #2, but even that historically doesn't mean much.

The lower right hand corner of the post you want to quote or respond to, hit the word "quote".
