Patty Kaz 2010

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Got it from a close friend of a UMD player, coach was ****ed that their player wasn't in the top three, and told the team that they didn't need to attend.

Total lack of class. TOTAL

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Meanwhile, now even more psyched to root for Cornell tomorrow. UMD blowing off the Kaz? F that.... Lack of class. Hope you get blown out tomorrow.

Oh, settle down. You have no idea why the Bulldogs weren't there. Considering that they'd played an exhausting game the night before and probably didn't get back to their hotel until midnight at the earliest, I would've let them sleep in, too. Blame whoever came up with the brilliant idea of a 10 a.m. brunch.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Seems UMD is not at the Kazmaier dinner again.

As much as I believe Blais should have been in the top 3, even before the WCHA tourney, I've never liked this move. While Kaz voters shouldn't punish future UMD players for these actions, I think they do.

I was listening to Shannon Miller commenting on the Kaz 3 outcome. She thought (1) The outcome was unfair to Blais (2) Kaz voting she be pushed back past the conference tournaments.

Typical Shannon of course.

I also heard Miller in an interview during yesterday's game regarding Blais in which she made a point of making a roundabout but quite pointed dig at Bendus though not by name (and Blais teammates really, too!) saying basically Blais did not have anyone to play with her to make her look good, she does it all by herself.

I realize practically everyone says things in the heat of the moment that they later regret, but she has elevated these kind of statements to an art form over time. Frankly just hearing her speak as she did (yet again) convinces me that she is a very poor role model for youth regardless of her coaching ability. Not the way I'd ever want my kids to conduct themselves.

To boycott the dinner as well is completely classless and juvenile. What is she, 2?

Unfortunately, these sort of childish actions and comments for which she is now well known tend to reflect badly on the school too as a result, so its no wonder she and UMD tend to have so many rooting against them.

Some people just have an inability to learn from past mistakes, and those around them lose too by association. If UMD players ultimately get penalized as a result of her never having learned to restrain her childishness, it's too bad, but it should hardly be any surprise to anyone either.

Nicely said Trillium. Miller has proven she knows how to coach (one can't really argue with her consistent results over the years), but I highly question some of her behavior. If your player doesn't win the award, you can still show enough respect for the other deserving nominees and the sport by attending the banquet. Blias is a great player, but so are Bendus, Paton, Raty and several others that didn't make the top three.

Congratulations to Vicki Bendus. All the nominees are good student athletes and good people, I'm sure, but she sounds like an outstanding young lady. Good for her.

This.

And with a 3.93 GPA. Wow.

Very deserving all round candidate. Hard to quibble with that.

Maybe she was saying that Blais had to step up this season and provide leadership and a ton of scoring, which is true. Blais only had 14 points last year. She's currently at 64 points. And Miller has never said that Blais does everything by herself. Nothing could be further from the truth. How you misinterpret any of that to be a dig at Bendus is beyond me.

Sorry, I didn't just misinterpret. There are ways you can be very complimentary to a player without putting down others at the same time. She most definitely did not do this. Rather she seemed pretty bitter. I knew exactly who she was referring to with her comments.

I've heard many other NCAA coaches do interviews, and most--even some I personally don't particularly like-- do still bend over backwards to be gracious and complimentary to other teams and players almost to a fault. (with only a couple of similar notable exceptions )

I have no problem whatsoever with her believing that Blais should have been Top 3, and saying she felt bad for her. And even saying that while the other candidates were very deserving, Blais was equally so. She went further and crossed the line. Blais certainly made a very good case for herself in the on-ice portion in yesterday's game. I have no idea how she might compare with the others off ice. But Miller just doesn't seem to get that she may actually have some personally culpability in Blais getting overlooked.

Frankly, the fact that UMD fans (some at least) continue to come to her defense for her episodes of poor behavior (and seemingly UMD administration willingly overlooks it) just reinforces it further, which ultimately makes things worse for everyone associated with the team. You can respect her results without also enabling her missteps.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

No way was that a dig at Bendus or on the rest of UMD. Miller has never said this season is the result of one thing, and no one would. The Kaz is NOT an NCAA scheduled event, it is NOT like the banquet on Thursday, not mandatory. UMD didn't have anyone up, just like the Badgers didn't have anyone up in 2008 and skipped the Kaz deal. No one went crazy then calling Wisconsin bad sports. Teams are getting ready for tomorrow. UMD didn't leave the rink until AFTER midnight last night, and the players didn't eat until 12:30am, with a few even later. Rest after late games like that with tight turnarounds is a premium. People love to rail UMD just because of UMD, but no one ever said Bendus wasn't worthy, including Miller.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Now you're just making things up. She didn't put any player down, Bendus or anybody else. I don't think I've missed any of her interviews during the tournament and she's been nothing but gracious toward other teams, as much as any other coach. She didn't cross any line because she didn't say what you apparently think you heard.

You can make things up, interpret things so they sound any way you like and then build a case for getting all worked up over your own misinterpretation. But that doesn't make any of it valid.

I got it from a guy I used to work with who lived next door to someone whose niece used to play on a team in the same league as someone who went to school with a guy who delivered mail to a woman who worked a concession stand at the arena where Cornell's top player used to play, and he said Cornell is going to cheat tomorrow.

Total lack of class.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I don't recall Wisconsin skipping the Kaz brunch in 2008. Can someone verify that?

UMD is only Frozen Four participant I can recall not regularly attending the Kaz meal, and they've skipped it several times. Even if Wisconsin may have skipped once, no one else has skipped it as many times as UMD.

I do however agree that Blais deserved to make top 3. I thought she deserved to be No. 2 after Bendus, and I was disappointed but not surprised to see the outcome. I do think she was discriminated against simply because she was a UMD player.

And I know a guy who knows a Joe Smo who...Ahh "I won't say it so you can say it"! :D

So its okay if Wisco (or any other team) misses it once but not okay for UMD to miss it three or four times? "Please" yourself, Dave.

UMDs got other things on their plate. Many have said this before, coaches are paid to win and Shannon wants to win. If skipping the Patty Kaz is part of a winning strategy, then may she be the smartest coach in college hockey. And I love how you all automatically assume that this was Miller's sole decision. Perhaps it was a team decision. Either way, it doesn't mater. Moving on....

If this is truly the case then the Patty Kaz voters need hang their head in shame and embarrassment and may they lose sleep at night over the disgrace they have thrust upon this award and the girls who work so hard for it. Patty Kaz herself would be oh so proud if she knew the vain her legacy has morphed into. Absolutely disgusting.

Congrats to Bender, you deserve this award. It will go great with your already stellar resume.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Thanks R Starr - very well said. --- If one knows the history of NE Mn one will understand that NE MN cares very little what "eastern interests" think.--- If the Dogs didn't get to bed until late, making them get up and to a 10 AM brunch would be pretty stupid and I, for one, would be pretty p****d at Coach Miller.

I didn't say that. First, I'm not sure if it's true that Wisco wasn't there in 2008. I missed that. Maybe I did. I just wanted another source. Second, DIGDOGS was asking why posters were singling out UMD for skipping the event, and the answer to that question is that they have a long history of skipping it, which is all I said.
UMDs got other things on their plate. Many have said this before, coaches are paid to win and Shannon wants to win. If skipping the Patty Kaz is part of a winning strategy, then may she be the smartest coach in college hockey.
Well, her team has made 7 Frozen Fours. They attended the dinner in 2003 when the event was in Duluth and Jenny Potter was in the final 3.

And I love how you all automatically assume that this was Miller's sole decision. Perhaps it was a team decision. Either way, it doesn't mater. Moving on....
Well, what has been the constant on the team since 2001?

This is how you rationalize it as a voter -- you don't like the UMD program off the ice or some her teammates behavior, and then it's guilt by association, and you think that's part of the off ice criteria for the award. I don't like it, but I think that's what happened.

Bottom line is, I don't think the voters in the aggregate were fair to Blais, but i don't think skipping the event is appropriate response either.

Perhaps the voters should rationalize burning in hell. :)

I don't really believe this is a case of Kaz voters trying to stick it to UMD. Blais didn't win PotY in the WCHA either, and I think a large part of that is her regular season wasn't as dominant as her postseason has been. Had she been on the same pace at the time that the WCHA or Kaz committee voted, I'd guess that she'd have received more votes in each case. UMD had a huge second half; so did Blais.

And just to be clear, IMO the performance of Blais would have been worthy of not only a Kaz top three, but a win. She has been that good. Like others before her, perhaps she'll add the NCAA MOP award and that will help define her career.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

What are you, 2 too? Any relation to Miller?

Yes...I must be two years old and in direct relation because I think the Patty Kaz committee should feel horrible if they are punishing UMD players because they are coached by Shannon Miller and/or play for UMD.

Cool that you're insinuating that you're pro tainting what is supposed to be an amazingly beautiful award. Guess that makes you, what, one and halfish?
