Patty Kaz 2010

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Baseball isn't a team sport?
Nah, the majority of the time its more of a collection of people doing individual things. ;)
You ARE a hockey player, aren't you?

Baseball is a TEAM sport. If the collection of people fail to do their individual things in a concerted way the results will be unsatisfying for all.

Baseball is a team sport.

It's OK by me if a hockey player doesn't think so but I just can't let it go unremarked upon.

I agree with you. Many of the team functions in baseball go unnoticed at awards time: advancing runners, backing up plays, throwing to the correct base. I think the same is true in hockey. Players don't get awards for picking up sticks, clearing rebounds, setting screens, backchecking, communicating on the ice, etc., but all of the little things are crucial to the team being successful.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I wonder if the committee/our opinions would change if Räty had missed the same games due to injury that she missed due to playing in the Olympics?
No, I don't think so. Missed games are missed games.

Take Agosta her instance. She missed the stretch run (or played pretty hurt) late in the 07-08 season, and she missed a few games early against some Mercyhurt's tougher opponents early in the 08-09 season. This definitely impacted her candidacy.

Here is where missing the games due to the Olympics hurts Räty on paper when I look at her results. She lost on the road at Wisconsin (didn't play the second game). Here next big road test is at Harvard, where she gives up one goal in two games. The away games at UMD would be a huge swing either way, but she does not play those games. At home she was great, but less so away. Missing those two games at UMD are missing data points that a hard to overlook.

I agree their important data points, but I'm no so concerned about her having big home/road splits (but Minnesota did as a team while they had her). Her performance at Harvard was amazing by all accounts I've heard, despite her team picking up only 1 point. You can't complain much about a goalie who gives up 1 goal in 2 games on the road.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I think the Olympic absence hurts Raty more than the freshman stigma.
Wouldn't she "normally" be a junior or senior based on her age? I don't think the women have gotten to the same point as the men where the average age of a freshmen is approximately 21 yrs old. Given her international experience, I don't think you can compare her to the average "freshmen".

Look, I don't think the fact she was a freshman will be a major factor in the outcome. But fact is she missed some key games for Minnesota that might have put her over the top had she been there and performed well in them.

On the other hand, when she did miss those key games her value to the team became that much more obvious.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I was listening to Shannon Miller commenting on the Kaz 3 outcome. She thought (1) The outcome was unfair to Blais (2) Kaz voting she be pushed back past the conference tournaments.

Typical Shannon of course, but I have to say, I completely agree with her this time, and I'm usually one of the first to criticize some of her reactions to various Kaz outcomes over the years. I do think a player with Blais' profile coming from anywhere other than UMD would have been in the top 3 this year, and I think the UMD fans do have good reason to be angry about this one.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Seems UMD is not at the Kazmaier dinner again.

As much as I believe Blais should have been in the top 3, even before the WCHA tourney, I've never liked this move. While Kaz voters shouldn't punish future UMD players for these actions, I think they do.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Congrats to Vicki Bendus!!

Not sure if you know this, but Vicki's a pre-med with a GPA on the order of Sara Bauer's. Truly the epitome of the student-athlete.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Vicki gets teary in her speech. Always a tough position to win the Kaz the day after your team is eliminated. Jennifer Botterill in 2001 and Sarah Vaillancourt in 2008 cried too.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Congratulations to Vicki on winning the Paty Kaz. Very nice job giving a difficult speech given she is not playing tomorrow. Mercyhurst is very proud to have her as a student-athlete.

Agreed -- congratulations to Ms. Bendus on an exceptional year and career to date at Mercyhurst.

Awards such as the Kaz are unfair by their very nature, because there are arbitrary cutoffs, recognizing the top 3 and the top 10. What is magical about 3 hockey players? Other than a forward line, which this clearly is not, nothing. So you get years like 2005 where there were at least 4 players at a certain level but only room for 3 of them. The same problem with the top 10. Shouldn't Fridfinnson be recognized? How do you say Blais is great, but Fridfinnson is not? That's like eating with chopsticks and saying you need one but not the other. I have no idea how these two stack up scholastically, but I would say that both pass the "meet them in person" test just fine, being humble, very respectful of both their teammates and the opposition, and just all around good people.

Seems UMD is not at the Kazmaier dinner again.

I'm sure the official stance would be that they are focused on the championship game tomorrow. As hard as these events might be on those eliminated, I think they are even worse as a distraction for those on the eve of the biggest game of the year, and it is worse when it was a dinner rather than a brunch. But women's hockey is such a small pond that all teams need to represent at least in part, even if an award is not always fair. Would the sport be better if there were no such award as the Kaz? I don't, so I think we should all support it, even though there may be some flaws.

Why should they go if there isn't a Bulldog in the running? Did every other team in the NCAA show up? If not, you can't single out the Bulldogs. People will single out the Bulldogs, of course, but that's par for the course. I don't see any problem in them not attending any more than any other team that didn't attend.

Congratulations to Vicki Bendus. All the nominees are good student athletes and good people, I'm sure, but she sounds like an outstanding young lady. Good for her.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

The reason he mentioned UMD is that it is one of the official events of the Frozen Four, like the off-day press conferences or the team banquet on Thursday night. One wouldn't expect North Dakota to attend, but it would be nice if Cornell showed up.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Congrats Vicki!

Meanwhile, now even more psyched to root for Cornell tomorrow. UMD blowing off the Kaz? F that.... Lack of class. Hope you get blown out tomorrow.

So you didn't have a player get nominated for the final three. I have no idea if she should have been, or if the right three were chosen. If my peewee team were here with me in town, we would have been there to respect and honor such a prestigious award.

A slap in the face to be sure.

Go Big Red!!
