Patty Kaz 2010

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I think this is true if two forwards are nominated. But if the nominees are a forward and a goalie, I am not sure how you can draw the connection between one helping the other, save for the number of team wins. Bendus/Bram/Scanzano benefit from playing on the same PP line (they are rarely together even strength), but did having Vetter in goal make the Wisconsin forwards better?
Sure it is possible. It depends on game plan / strategy. For example team allows shots from certain angles and distances. You do not have to worry about blocking shots and this way your readiness to turn direction is much quicker. And this creates more scoring chances.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Wow Dave, quoting yourself. You must really want to discuss this :)
I'm eager to procrastinate.
I think it is important to look at who was ranked #1 or #2 in the opinion polls when the top 10 are determined. My guess is the top 2 teams are the ones that get multiple candidates (e.g. Mercyhurst this year, Wisconsin last year) and the award goes to the best player on the best team (pre NCAA tournament). Is there a poll archive somewhere on the internet? Was Harvard ranked #1 or #2 in 2006-2007? I recall Merychurst being ranked high, but only Agosta getting a top 10 nomination from the team. This would be easier with the poll archive.
"Best player between the top two teams around the time of voting" does ok in predicting the Kazmaier outcome, and I expect it'll hold true this year, but is far from perfect for various reasons. I'd say that was true in every year except 2001, 2002, 2007.

I'm pretty sure Harvard's rank peaked at #4 when they were 11-1 and had just swept UMD, and they were No. 6 entering the tournament. As I'm sure you recall Mercyhurst and Wisconsin flipped-flopped No. 1 & 2 most of the season. And that year Chu beat out two top 3 finalists from both teams. Also, that was probably Vaillancourt's worst season by far, and a lot of people didn't think she deserved to make the 10 (though she did have one standout weekend against UMD). Though that year Chu had a few other factors in her favor -- she led the nation in points per game & % of games with points, and she had her prior reputation -- even though Harvard's season was marked by a number of narrow defeats. Also, Agosta was probably hurt by her youth, and Bauer hurt by having won the year before, even though these aren't supposed to be criteria. So it was a combination of factors that led to that result.

Other exceptions -- in 2001, Harvard was No. 3 and Botterill and Shewchuk pretty much singlehandedly carried a team that was pretty lacking in depth. In 2002, Northeastern was No. 2 with Gunn & Whitney until mid-February, and Northeastern really tailed off towards the end and finished No. 6. That was probably the year whose outcome surprised me the most.

... Mercyhurst played the nation's 2nd-toughest schedule according to the NCAA's measure ...
While most computer rankings of teams converge to a great extent by this point of the season, apparently the S.o.S. measurements do not. KRACH has the Lakers playing the tenth-toughest schedule.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I was able to get to Detroit this weekend for the CHA playoffs. I think Bram and Bendus are the two to watch out of the trio. Bram is one of the hardest workers I have ever seen, so much speed and has some of the best hands I have ever seen. Scanzano is big an has speed but the other two are just nice to watch. Bendus is a great player but I think that anyone who knows hockey can see that Bram is the key to the trio's success.

Feel free to debate, but the Patty Kaz voting always happens the same week as the top 10 release. In other words, it's already over.

that's good news. unless it's like the conspiracy when Haydar was up for the hobey and they gave it to leopold because unh lost in the semis and it was in minnesota

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

It's a shame that Blais' playoff performances won't be counted. Seven points on the weekend, tournament MVP, 60 points on the season (so far)...how hard is it to vote? I don't know why they do it so early.

Its so that the winner is recognized more for their Total Season's Body of work and not just on their playoff performance....

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they're voting for the top ten and also voting for their top three and also voting for their overall winner all at the same time. What a stupid process.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Top 3 announced tomorrow!

And do they really do 3 different votes? I was always under the impression they voted out of the top 10 then the top 3 were announced.

The coaches vote for their top 10. These votes are somehow aggregated to produce the top 10 list.

Then committee members rank their top 3 choices. These votes are somehow aggregated to produce to the top 3 and the winner.

They do not do a 2nd vote within the top 3. It's like when the Heisman finalists are announced, they don't do a re-vote among the 4 players or whatever it is when they come to NYC. Ditto for the NHL awards. The finalists are just the top votegetters.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Paton's an odd choice. Blais outperformed her in every category except power play points. Of course, Blais is a Bulldog. That never helps.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Ms. Räty at her finest (oh, and it's against Clarkson, too :p ).

The first category people usually look at for forwards is points per game. Paton still has a tiny lead over Blais, but it was considerably bigger when the voting took place, before Blais had 7 points in two games while Paton had 0 points in one.
