Re: Patty Kaz 2010
From the wrong thread:
Can somebody explain why Hokey Langan isn't on the list? I'm not being a smart aleck.
Good question.
I almost predicted the 10 perfectly last week. The only errors I made were
(1) Nelson making it over Langan
(2) saying 1 D would make it, either Smith or Birchard (Smith made it - so I only call that half right, I didn't take a stand). I could've predicted Smith.
If I had reminded myself of the following two trends in coaches voting, I'd have gotten it totally right
(1) Kazmaier voting is almost always biased against freshmen, relative to stats. i.e. if a senior and freshmen have similar stats, the senior will get the nod. You could justify this by whatever value the Kazmaier voting process ascribes to "leadership." For freshmen to make the cut, they need either (a) A lot of prior exposure from the Olympics and/or (b) really outstanding stats. Raty, the only freshmen, to make it, of course had both.
(2) Kazmaier 10 voting is generally going to be biased towards spreading the wealth across conferences. You would expect this because it's 1-coach, 1 vote. And coaches are going to all be biased towards their own conference. Also coaches might want to be fair and mention each conference once.
(3) all else equal in statistics and seniority, players on better teams will get more votes
Applying these trends, I could have concluded the following
(1) That Britni Smith would beat Birchard in the voting. The difference? First, Hockey East already had two other serious contenders (Paton & Schelling) while the ECAC only one had one (Parsons). And one of those was Paton's teammate. Also, the ECAC has 12 coaches, while Hockey East 8. So it was fairly predictable that Britni Smith would win.
(2) I was right in predicting the WCHA would get 3 top 10 candidates, but which 3? Raty and Blais clearly stood out. As for Nelson vs. Langan, I'd say the three dominant factors were (a) the upperclass bias, and (b) the fact that SCSU finished above OSU in the WCHA standings and (c) Nelson led the nation in goals scored, while Langan led the WCHA in scoring, and I think voters look more at national stats for national awards. Nelson's selection over Langan was predictable.
