Patty Kaz 2010

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I think that these 5 are the most likely picks for the final 3.

Raty is probably on the outside, imo.

If I had to guess, I think it will be the Mercyhurst gals and either Paton or Blais. I don't see the voters picking one Laker over the other.

Not that I'm going out on a limb here.

Is the next cut down to 5?

The more players from one team on the list, the more votes that are split?

They only vote on the ten. The top three will be announced, but they don't vote again at that point.

It's possible that they would split votes, but Mercyhurst has had such a dominant season.

I think the more relevant question is which voters would put Paton AND Blais (or another 2 of the final 10) ahead of one of the 'Hurst gals.

What is the voting system? Is it simply a vote for one player, and the winner gets the most votes, or is it a ranking of players via a point system (as the Major League Baseball MVP vote is done). Of course, they could get all wonky and use the preferential system that the Oscars are doing this year.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

A few thoughts --

-- I know voters provide their first choice, second choice, and third choice. (Similarly, coaches rank their top 10 choices for the top 10). I have absolutely no idea how votes are aggregated, whether they award points, or do an instant run off, or what.

-- I don't think the "splitting votes" problem should be too large for two reasons
(1) unlike MLB MVP voting, committee members do have a conference call prior to voting
(2) Committee members get references from all the coaches for each of the top 10 candidates.

And why does (2) matter? As I mentioned in earlier in this thread, if a coach thinks one player on his/her team deserves the award over any other, I'd recommend the coach use language in the recommendation that makes it very clear which player on the team deserves the award and why, to increase coordination among voters and reduce this splitting votes problem.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

From the wrong thread:

Can somebody explain why Hokey Langan isn't on the list? I'm not being a smart aleck.

Good question.

I almost predicted the 10 perfectly last week. The only errors I made were
(1) Nelson making it over Langan
(2) saying 1 D would make it, either Smith or Birchard (Smith made it - so I only call that half right, I didn't take a stand). I could've predicted Smith.

If I had reminded myself of the following two trends in coaches voting, I'd have gotten it totally right
(1) Kazmaier voting is almost always biased against freshmen, relative to stats. i.e. if a senior and freshmen have similar stats, the senior will get the nod. You could justify this by whatever value the Kazmaier voting process ascribes to "leadership." For freshmen to make the cut, they need either (a) A lot of prior exposure from the Olympics and/or (b) really outstanding stats. Raty, the only freshmen, to make it, of course had both.
(2) Kazmaier 10 voting is generally going to be biased towards spreading the wealth across conferences. You would expect this because it's 1-coach, 1 vote. And coaches are going to all be biased towards their own conference. Also coaches might want to be fair and mention each conference once.
(3) all else equal in statistics and seniority, players on better teams will get more votes

Applying these trends, I could have concluded the following

(1) That Britni Smith would beat Birchard in the voting. The difference? First, Hockey East already had two other serious contenders (Paton & Schelling) while the ECAC only one had one (Parsons). And one of those was Paton's teammate. Also, the ECAC has 12 coaches, while Hockey East 8. So it was fairly predictable that Britni Smith would win.

(2) I was right in predicting the WCHA would get 3 top 10 candidates, but which 3? Raty and Blais clearly stood out. As for Nelson vs. Langan, I'd say the three dominant factors were (a) the upperclass bias, and (b) the fact that SCSU finished above OSU in the WCHA standings and (c) Nelson led the nation in goals scored, while Langan led the WCHA in scoring, and I think voters look more at national stats for national awards. Nelson's selection over Langan was predictable.

Then we should probably expect no more than one Mercyhurst player in the top three. So will we get Blais, Paton, and the Mercyhurst representative, whomever that might be?

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I really wish more fans around the country would have had a chance to watch Noora Räty play this season. She really has been spectacular in net and deserves her nomination and serious consideration as a finalist. She's been a huge factor in her teams success this season.

I imagine her freshman status and absences during the season don't help her chances...as well as her position of goaltender perhaps.

While, as with most things, seeing is believing, all those who haven't seen her play can still check out her stats...which speak for themselves.

Something we totally agree on:D . She is amazing. Hope many people got to see her in action during the Olympics.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I expect Raty has a fantastic chance at the top 3, as does Paton, as others have mentioned. I can't make any confident claims about the 3 Mercyhurst players at this point.

She is amazing and I'm sure she'll make that Patty Kaz list more than once in her lifetime.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

I think the USCHO "Question of the Week" (where Week = Year  ) poll, you'll see the "split votes" problem manifest itself between the Mercyhurst players. Not sure how it'll turn it out. My guess is Raty ends up with the most votes.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

Or more likely, people have long since forgotten that poll exists or become frustrated with its staleness...

It's been a long time since I've had a reason to scroll down to the bottom of the main page.:) If nothing else, the "total votes" will give a little indication of how many people hit the front page these days.

I don't know. I think the MC players will get a lot of the ECAC vote, because neither Smith nor Parsons is likely to get broad support for the top slot.

Re: Patty Kaz 2010

How many Europeans have been in TOP 10 or TOP 3 amnong the years ? It would be interesting to know. So far I know only goalies. Kim Martin TOP 3 and now Noora + Florence TOP 10.

She made a believer out of me for two weeks in February!
