Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

Here's the last batch. It has been interesting, as always.

I'm thinking they'll trade for a veteran DE and/or OLB this summer.

Rd 1, Pick 27 (27): Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers
Rd 2, Pick 10 (42): Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona
Rd 2, Pick 21 (53): Jermaine Cunningham, DE, Florida
Rd 2, Pick 30 (62): Brandon Spikes, LB, Florida
Rd 3, Pick 26 (90): Taylor Price, WR, Ohio
Rd 4, Pick 15 (113): Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida
Rd 5, Pick 19 (150): Zoltan Mesko, P, Michigan
Rd 6, Pick 36 (205*): Ted Larsen, C, NC State
Rd 7, Pick 1 (208): Thomas Welch, OT, Vanderbilt
Rd 7, Pick 40 (247*): Brandon Deaderick, DE, Alabama
Rd 7, Pick 41 (248*): Kade Weston, DT, Georgia
Rd 7, Pick 43 (250*): Zac Robinson, QB, OKlahoma State

Also, I forgot about the Dave Thomas trade. So here's what NE has in the 2011 draft:

1
1 (Oakland -- Seymour)
2
2 (Carolina -- 2010 third-rounder)
3
4
5
6
7
7 (New Orleans -- Thomas)

Or they will just do it today. They signed DE Gerard Warren from the Raiders. He was a first round draft pick three years ago from........Florida!

He's been in the league for ten years, so I don't think he was drafted 3 years ago.

Zoltan? Isn't that the guy that made Tom Hanks go from a 12 year old to a 25 year old in "BIG"??

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

This is an interesting note from Belichick's WEEI appearance yesterday:
Belichick was asked about drafting players based on NFL trends such as more teams with high-powered pass offenses, and he responded by saying that might have been something on the radar 3-4 years ago. But recently, Belichick feels it’s headed in the other direction, toward the running game. “Just as an example, this past year I think there were almost three times as many plays in the league as there had been in quite a while with an offensive lineman lined up at a tight end position,” he said. “I think that also speaks to being a little more physical, and having a bigger body and a better blocker at that position.”

Mike Reiss reports that the seventh-rounder from New Orleans has been upgraded to a sixth.

Also, for fun, NEPatriotsDraft.com has a 2011 mock draft, with NE picking 7th (from Oakland) . . . and 32nd.:) I could live with that scenario.

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

32nd?!?!?!?!?

who'd they trade with?
:D

Realistically, in this scenario they probably started at 18 but traded down five times to stockpile additional fourth- and fifth-round draft choices who can't play.;)

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

Interesting Brady quote from King's MMQB:
Last year was pretty disappointing in a lot of ways, obviously. Losing to Baltimore the way we lost in the playoffs, losing leads late, losing on the road. Every year is so different, and the way we approach this year will be extremely important. We need to see the toughness. We need to see the commitment. Can we take the coaching?

Super Bowl, here we come!!!
The Patriots to re-sign pass-rusher Derrick Burgess

The Patriots have attempted to bolster their pass-rush, bringing back a familiar face to do so. Earlier this morning, the Patriots reached an agreement with Derrick Burgess, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter.

After being acquired in a training camp trade with much fanfare, the veteran outside linebacker/defensive end made 34 tackles and had five sacks. Burgess, 31, played in more than 50 percent of the snaps and watched his role increase all year.

Beginning as a nickel pass-rusher, the 6-foot-2, 260-pound two-time Pro Bowler even earned some starts at end. He concluded the year with serious praise from Bill Belichick, as the coach called him “probably as good as we’ve had as a run player and a pass rusher.”

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

Not sure what to make of this, but sounds like good news, anyway.
Wes Welker gave his third interview in less than a week on Friday and touched on many of the same themes he hit on earlier in his two previous Q&A’s. But there was one new piece of information — he said that when it came to his left knee injury, he injured “just the [anterior cruciate ligament],” which would run counter to the reports that the wide receiver also injured his medial collateral ligament in the same knee in the regular-season finale against the Texans in January.

UPDATE: 1:52 A.M.: If Welker did injure only the ACL in his left knee — not the ACL AND MCL — this would drastically alter the rehab timetable, according to noted sports injury expert Dr. Will Carroll, author of “The Carroll Guide to Sports Injuries.”

“I did a piece on this in last year’s Football Outsiders Almanac. The standard is not to repair the MCL, so there’s not a significant difference in the rehab now for ACL and MCL or just ACL,” Carroll said in an e-mail to WEEI.com. “There is, however, a big difference in the rehab. With the MCL, they try to make the leg stronger to hold it in place without the ligament.

“Overall, he should be healed to some level by training camp, but I’m not sure just how much. You saw Brady when he was coming back from it — I’m sure he didn’t look 100% on day one either, but he was back and playing. If it’s just ACL, it should take SOME time off, but not a lot.”
