Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

Bill tried to score the FUTD but couldn't quite manage it. Have to settle for a 14-pt win.

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

You can argue this one either way:

The game wasn't as close as the final score. NE completely dominated in the first half, and just coasted in the second.

NE let their guard up too early, and if not for that return TD by Tate they would have been looking at a 7 point lead in the 3rd, with their defense having been on the field for 24 plays, to 3 for Cincy.

If NE had another 3 and out after Cincy pulled within 14 late in the 3rd, this one really could have been a nailbiter. Either way you spin it, that drive was the clincher.

I'd go with your first one: had that return not happened, the Pats may not have gone into coast mode the way they did. Not excusing it--I hate them coasting at all--but I think that runback and a 28 point lead had the team thinking that the game was over, and they played accordingly after that.

Either way, a 1-0 start over a Bengals team that came in highly regarded is a very good thing.

I think it was a great game. Pats held the Bengals at bay in the entire first half, but Patriot D in the second half was tired - that has me worried some, especially this long season with a pretty tough schedule. 97 yard Kickoff return, 59 yard pick for a TD, Welker getting two TDs and the rookie Gronkowski his first, and Brady played pretty flawless: no picks and 25/35.

Channel 5 just reported that Mankins is done with the Pats; Moss had a diatribe at the press conference, saying this is his last year as a Patriot and the organization does not take care of him.

I thought Cincy was going to roll over the weak Patriot D, but Belechik surprises - as usual.

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

My thoughts:

Great game by the Pats. Exceeded my wildest expectations. I figured the Pats would score, especially with the new TE's. The running game was better than expected, but if everybody's worried about the pass it tends to open things up. Pass protection was good too.

Not too concerned about the D giving up the points. With a rookie and an unproven second year man facing Palmer, Ochocino and Owens, I was expecting a lot worse. Ochocino's put up big numbers but no game breaking plays, a lot of his yards were in garbage time, and he made some **** good catches (the TD for example). Aside from Indy, there's not another O in the conference with those weapons. I thought Sanders got caught standing around a few too many times, but he's not going to be a starter back there anyway. I'm thinking they were okay with the Bengals taking all quarter to score 7 points when they were losing by 3 touchdowns.

QB pressure was good. Run D was adequate also. All in all a solid win.

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

I am not upset about the Moss comments. All that I heard over and over was I want a new contract. He just used different words.

Agreed. My Pats fan co-worker and the Pats bartender also agreed with that sentiment. They want "the killer instinct that got them to 16-0" and not what they had last year.

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

That looked like a team that knew what it was doing today. They attacked on offense and played good D for much of the game, backing off to prevent the big play as the game went on (see Houston, who went for the knockout blow against Indy and gave up a long TD pass late).

They are still paper thin defensively and there are still plenty of questions, but that was a nice win. Chung, who played mostly on ST last season, was all over the place. McCourtey looked good and Butler looked okay, I thought (Reiss lists him as a "thumbs down" but I think that's hasty).

And the special teams has the potential to be so much better this season. Think of all those close games last year and then factor in 8 yards here and 12 yards there on ST, and maybe it becomes a different story. They covered well and they returned well.

In other news, the Colts won't be resting their starters at 14-0 this year, and the Raiders (Pats have their first-rounder in '11) and Panthers (Pats have their second-rounder in '11) both lost.

Really good day overall. They need to go 8-7 in the next 15 games to meet my 9-7 prediction. :) Speaking of that, I guess we should start an in-season thread.

Me neither. The guy wants a contract here. And he thinks the media are f_kin idiots. On the first point I can understand; on the second he's 100% correct. :D

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

Yep, Moss' comments weren't controversial at all IMO, but it will be overblown by the blowhards...especially that ********* Felger.

Great performance today...didn't see that coming.

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

Pats trade Maroney to Denver. Compensation TBA.

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

Not too surprising. Would like to think he'll garner at least a fourth or fifth, right?

Murrell never cleaned out his locker yesterday, so if it's a pick they get back, they'll probably add Murrell right back onto the roster.

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

Schefter says NE gets Denver's fourth-round pick in 2011 and Denver gets New England's sixth-round pick in 2011.

Pretty lousy first-round pick, and the way they handled him could've probably used some improvement as well. Watson is the only first-rounder I recall being close to as big a bust in the Belichick era.

EXCELLENT! I really like how they're clearing out dead wood veterans this year (Burgess, Woods, Alexander, now Maroney). While I understand two of those guys were special teamers, you can only give a roster spot to mediocre players for so long before its time to give someone else a chance. If Maroney had anything to show the Pats, he would have done so already. I'm surprised they got a pick for him, but whatever.

Wondering if there's an RB in their sights for the draft next year with that Raiders pick.

Re: Patriots' Offseason: Last Days of the Dynasty?

I've always had high hopes for Maroney but the guy can't seem to get it together. He'll probably be great for Denver:D
