IF Slovakia somehow manages to beat Canada Friday night, I would expect riots all across Canada. Stuff that would make the LA riots look tame and pieceful. Like 15 years later they'll still be finding heads out in the woods on hockey sticks type of stuff.
I didn't stay up to watch the Slovakia-Sweden game last night. I'm a bit surprised that Slovakia won, but since I'm a lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan, I'm glad goalie Jaroslav Halak came through in the clutch for his team. Frankly Halak has outplayed Carey Price for Montreal this season.
While I'm rooting for the U.S. to win the gold medal, with the semi-final pairings of Finland-U.S. and Canada-Slovakia my hunch is that things look good for the Canadians. And yes, I am stunned that no medal will be taken home by the Czechs, Russians or Swedes.
My prediction is the US will hold on to beat the Finns and we'll have a USA/Canada rematch in the gold medal game. And I don't see Canada losing that match-up twice in one Olympics.
This would be an amazing feat for USA Hockey. Possibly the best year ever? I know '80 was great, but it was one tournament. This seems like it would be total world domination at all levels of hockey.
Nothing can top 1980. The USA team, made up of all college players, against the mighty Russian team, made up of some of the best hockey players in the world at the time. The USA team had been together for 6 months, the majority of the of the Soviet team had played together for approx 10 years by that point. The policital landscape at the time made added to the drama and that gold medal earned, by going through and beating the mighty Soviet team, was something that can never be topped.

It was a little absurd that the media was dubbing this the second miracle. Yes, a group of highly paid NHL players beating a group of more highly paid NHL players clearly conjurers up memories of a bunch of college kids beating a collection of guys who had beaten NHL all-star teams. Makes perfect sense.
so.. the U.S. has won the Under 17's, the Under 18's, the Under 20's against Canada and has the chance to win the Women's Gold Medal against Canada and potentially the Men's Gold Medal against Canada?

That sounds like a heck of a story.
They should make a movie about it!

I don't think anyone, including myself intended it to be meant that it would be a greater overall achievement than winning the gold in 1980. But from a purely overall, every level of hockey (and just hockey, not politics) standpoint it's something that stands out on its own as one of the greatest overall years for the United States and hockey in general.
