Part IV of the XXIst Winter Olympiad Or All Your Hockey Are Belong to US

Re: Part IV of the XXIst Winter Olympiad Or All Your Hockey Are Belong to US

IF Slovakia somehow manages to beat Canada Friday night, I would expect riots all across Canada. Stuff that would make the LA riots look tame and pieceful. Like 15 years later they'll still be finding heads out in the woods on hockey sticks type of stuff.

Don't you understand? THAT HAS BEEN THE PLAN ALL ALONG!

1. Canada loses in hockey.
2. Mass suicides/mayhem across Canada.
3. U.S. walks into a further depopulated Alberta, taking possession of oil sands.
4. Budget deficit solved!!!!!!

:D

I can't say I'm that dissapointed. I've always preferred the Finns and the Slovaks to Swedes and Czechs, may man crush on Doug Murray not withstanding. The US, the Finns, and the Slovaks are probably the traditional "underdog" hockey powers, so its nice that at least 2 of the 3 will get medals.

Looks like I'll be "borrowing" someone elses TV stream to watch the women's game at work.

I didn't stay up to watch the Slovakia-Sweden game last night. I'm a bit surprised that Slovakia won, but since I'm a lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan, I'm glad goalie Jaroslav Halak came through in the clutch for his team. Frankly Halak has outplayed Carey Price for Montreal this season.

While I'm rooting for the U.S. to win the gold medal, with the semi-final pairings of Finland-U.S. and Canada-Slovakia my hunch is that things look good for the Canadians. And yes, I am stunned that no medal will be taken home by the Czechs, Russians or Swedes.

My prediction is the US will hold on to beat the Finns and we'll have a USA/Canada rematch in the gold medal game. And I don't see Canada losing that match-up twice in one Olympics.

That's what I see as well Moe. I just don't envision the U.S. beating Canada in a rematch.

The women's gold medal game will match Canada and the U.S. The men's game may do the same and I must say I didn't foresee that happening before the games began.

so.. the U.S. has won the Under 17's, the Under 18's, the Under 20's against Canada and has the chance to win the Women's Gold Medal against Canada and potentially the Men's Gold Medal against Canada?

This would be an amazing feat for USA Hockey. Possibly the best year ever? I know '80 was great, but it was one tournament. This seems like it would be total world domination at all levels of hockey.

Dare I say... would that be completely unprecidented? Has any one nation ever done that?

The only way to cap it off would be to win the IIHF Championships later this spring.

Nothing can top 1980. The USA team, made up of all college players, against the mighty Russian team, made up of some of the best hockey players in the world at the time. The USA team had been together for 6 months, the majority of the of the Soviet team had played together for approx 10 years by that point. The policital landscape at the time made added to the drama and that gold medal earned, by going through and beating the mighty Soviet team, was something that can never be topped.

That sounds like a heck of a story.
They should make a movie about it!

:)

It was a little absurd that the media was dubbing this the second miracle. Yes, a group of highly paid NHL players beating a group of more highly paid NHL players clearly conjurers up memories of a bunch of college kids beating a collection of guys who had beaten NHL all-star teams. Makes perfect sense.

There is no way that it was a second miracle. That's obviously insane hyperbole stirred up by the media.

However, the US team has absolutely exceeded expectations this year and it would be pretty incredible if they could win it all.

That would be great if the Men and Women won the gold, I'm not holding my breath after watching the Canadians roll over Russia

I don't think anyone, including myself intended it to be meant that it would be a greater overall achievement than winning the gold in 1980. But from a purely overall, every level of hockey (and just hockey, not politics) standpoint it's something that stands out on its own as one of the greatest overall years for the United States and hockey in general.

Forget the movie, the real event as it played out was an awesome thing to experience for an 11 year old as I was then. The movie was good for you youngsters who weren't old enough to watch it at the time. :D

I understand what you are saying, but as Walrus implied, don't count your chickens before they hatch.:p

Re: Part IV of the XXIst Winter Olympiad Or All Your Hockey Are Belong to US

eurotrash? lol

not sure NBC will like that

Chatter on sports talk radio is that Mike Milbury should be taken off NBC for his statement about the Russian game. Milbury speaking to hockey people makes an accurate statement. However, to the non-hockey knowledgable crowd it sounds like he is insulting the Russian team. NBC brought Milbury in because he is popular, well-respected and mostly because he is known to be outspoken. This type of comment should not surprise the network brass. Milbury's best defense here is to stick to the truth as he sees it and tell anyone seeking an apology to pound sand. For this he would be more respected in the hockey world. Agreeing to some corporate apology statement carefully crafted by NBC lawyers would be shameful. I don't know what NBC is worried about. The women's figure skating is the network's bread and butter for ratings and audience viewership, not hockey.
