Re: Pairwise and Bracketology 2013 Edition

Man.... if WMU got to play in grand rapids we would blow the roof off of that place. (in a non terrorist sort of way)

Based on the way WMU has traveled recently to Detroit for CCHA games or the GLIs, the committee should definitely be ready to make swaps necessary to get them to Grand Rapids or Toledo. They would appear to be ready to drive attendance at either location.

Re: Pairwise and Bracketology 2013 Edition

Priceless,

Thanks for the site. I get different results from there if I enter today's results manually.

And, I think you have a problem:

I think you want :
Manchester (UNH): UNH (1), North Dakota (7), Dartmouth (10), Colgate (16) and
Providence (Brown): BC (2), Denver (8), Yale (9), Mankato (15)

That is, if you intended to change the entire first round games (UND/Dart and DU/Yale)

I get, from Whelan's site (is there an error somewhere??)
1 - NH 26 .5935
2 - BC 26 .5899
3 - QU 26 .5881
4 - Mn 24 .5827

5 - Nt 23 .5700
6 - BU 21 .5672
7 - ND 21 .5599
8 - DU 20 .5565

9 - Ya 19 .5519
10 - WM 17 .5440
11 - Mm 17 .5512
12 - Da 16 .5505

13 - ML 15 .5435
14 - Ni 13 .5350
15 - Mk 12 .5302
16 - Cg 12 .5237

Which is a match to USCHO. Except for the 10/11 tiebreak between Miami and Western Michigan.

That's annoying. Wonder what changed. I just pasted my game scores in again and got these same results. Odd.

Well, that destroys our beautiful bracket.

Code:
[B]Manchester (UNH)Providence (Brown)	Toledo (BGSU) Grand Rapids (Michigan)[/B]
New Hamp	Boston C Quinnipiac Minnesota
Denver North Dakota Boston U Notre Dame
W Michigan	Yale Miami Dartmouth
Colgate Mankato Niagara Lowell

Yale and Dartmouth are interchangeable with Western Michigan. The other possibility is

Code:
[B]Manchester (UNH)Providence (Brown)	Toledo (BGSU) Grand Rapids (Michigan)[/B]
New Hamp	Boston C Quinnipiac Minnesota
Denver Notre Dame Boston U North Dakota
Dartmouth	Yale Miami W Michigan
Colgate Mankato Niagara Lowell

Re: Pairwise and Bracketology 2013 Edition

Ya, but I can't see Qu ever getting a number one seed in a region. I mean c'mon, how many top five or top ten teams have they defeated?

I get where you are going with all this, because you rearrange the 3rd seeds to get Yale at Providence, and the CCHA teams in their home states, which is a great idea. And, you know, there are so many ways to do things then, that we can't really predict the committee, can we?

Because, in your above layout, it is just as reasonable to have North Dakota, as 7th overall, in the same bracket as Quinnipiac (3rd overall), and BU (6th) in the bracket with Minny (4th). And, considering that last year, UND and Minn played in the semis for the Broadmoor, and then again for the Regional Championship, I think it would be better to separate them. But, you can't really say for all certainty that one is better than another. It all depends how the committee would weigh the parts out.......

And, like we have mentioned in years past, My Own Preference is that the committee use strict numbers to choose the 16 teams, because there can be no accusations of foul play that way. But, once the field is chosen, it is hard to say that #10 is much better than 11, 12 or even 13. So, more latitude in switching is better. That's My Own Preference.

See past years where Yale got a #1. Same conference. Same sort of schedule. It's all what you do with it.....

At time of playing?

Cornell was 4, Dartmouth was 8, Union was 7/8 the first time they played, UNO was 12/13.

Oh, those all are wins.

Re: Pairwise and Bracketology 2013 Edition

Just think of where they would rank if they hadn't lost to AIC. :D

They'd be #1 by a wide margin if they'd knocked off AIC. They'd even be #1 if they had tied that game, but it'd be closer. That was a crippling loss.

Re: Pairwise and Bracketology 2013 Edition

QU is 8-0 against ranked teams this year. They are 11-0-1 ECAC and 17-3-3 overall. That is amazing!

2 of those losses are to AHA teams, which is just as interesting. They have UConn on the 22nd. Upset maybe?

Re: Pairwise and Bracketology 2013 Edition

Bump for Priceless and I will edit a guess in, too.

Fri night: Mankato vs Anchorage game incomplete. No access to slack.net to do an actual (If UAA wins or If MSU-M wins) scenario.

1 - QU
2 - UNH
3 - Minny
4 - BC
5 - Yale
6t - Dartmouth
6t - BU
6t - NoDak
9 - NoDame
10 - DU
11 - Lowell
12 - Miami

Now - guessing by looking at individual compares:
If MSU-M wins, they can flip the WMU compare only so:

13 - WMU
14 - SCSU
15 - Mankato
16 - Niagara

If Mankato loses, their RPI may fall enough to lose 3 compares (I don't know, but 1 is enough), so it goes:

13 - WMU
14 - SCSU
15 - Cornell
16 - Niagara

Providence: QU (1), NoDak (8), NoDame (9), Niagara (16)
Manchester: UNH (2), BU (7), DU (10), Mankato (15) or Cornell (15)
Grand Rapids: Minny (3), Dartmouth (6), Lowell (11), Western Mich (13)
Toledo: BC (4), Yale (5), Miami (12), SCSU (14)

Personally, I like no further trades here. Miami is in Toledo. WMU is in Grand Rapids. Providence looks bad, but the only change there is either Yale for NoDak, and that upsets the bracket, or Dartmouth for NoDak, and as much as I like Minn vs NoDak - they played last year in both the WCHA and Regional tourneys. Leave it alone.

Late edit: Pardon me. Lowell for NoDame might work here. It messes the bracket a little, but it's one less flight, and might help Providence.

Re: Pairwise and Bracketology 2013 Edition

I'm on the road in Orono until tomorrow afternoon so there won't be any pairwise/bracketology updates from me until at least then. The NFL Conference finals are on tomorrow and I have B's tix on Monday so I don't know when I'll have a chance to update. However, it is time once again to compare the previous 10 seasons of PWR data to see how good it is at predicting the field, so I'll be posting those stats this week.

Re: Pairwise and Bracketology 2013 Edition

Saturday Jan 19. Mankato vs Anchorage game incomplete:

1-QU
2-Minny
3-BC
4-UNH

5-Yale
6-NoDak
7-Lowell
8-Miami

9-Dartmouth
10-NoDame
11-Den
12-WMU

13-BU
14-SCSU

If Mankato loses or ties:
15-Niagara
16-NMU

If Mankato wins, I believe they flip the Niagara compare:
15-Mankato
16-NMU but Niagara gets 16th seed

Bracket:
Providence: QU(1), Miami(8), Dartmouth(9), NMU(16) or Nia(16)
Grand Rapids: Minny(2), Lowell (7), NoDame (10), Niagara(15) or Mank(15)
Toledo: BC(3), NoDak(6), Den (11), SCSU(14)
Manchester: UNH(4), Yale(5), WMU(12), BU(13)

Swap BU for Niagara(Mankato), Den/WMU/NoDame; then::

Providence: QU(1), Miami(8), Dartmouth(9), NMU(16) or Nia(16)
Grand Rapids: Minny(2), Lowell (7), WMU(12), BU(13)
Toledo: BC(3), NoDak(6), NoDame(10), SCSU(14)
Manchester: UNH(4), Yale(5), Den(11), Niagara(15) or Mankato(15)

Re: Pairwise and Bracketology 2013 Edition

There is no way that BC gets sent to Toledo. That Providence bracket will draw about 5 or 6K maybe on a good day.

Re: Pairwise and Bracketology 2013 Edition

If QU is ahead of BC with both in the top 4, and UNH is top 4, BC is forced to go to Toledo.

Thank you Tony the Tiger. Of course, that is straight out of the NCAA book.
1) Host schools at home. In this case - New Hampshire goes to Manchester
2) Fill the top seeds, starting at #1, and put in the closest available region. In this case, that means Quinnipiac gets put in first, and has to go to Providence. Then, Minnesota to Grand Rapids, and finally, BC to Toledo.

One would assume (and hope) that they would swap Lowell and Miami for the sake of attendance. At 5 hours and change, the folks in Oxford can drive to Grand Rapids.
