Sigh. Oh well.

Still a pretty decent shot a Wild Card if they win out.

Re: Packers 2010 Regular Season - ARodg and Woody in Clay-mation

Hard to be too upset about it, given how low our expectations were going into it.

Even still... Things were looking so good if we could've pulled that out.

6 losses by an average of 3 1/3 points. And pretty much any one of them could've been a victory. It's amazing how much a series of "almosts" and "maybes" can change your season.

I think the big question that really needs to be addressed come January (February?:D) is how many of those "almosts" and "maybes" are down to McCarthy.

I never expected a win in this game, but it's so frustrating for McCarthy to be so masterful for 3 quarters and then be so awful in the 4th.

Re: Packers 2010 Regular Season - ARodg and Woody in Clay-mation

I'm not as big of a critic of McCarthy's play calling as 95% of the world's Packer fans. What concerns me the most isn't what plays he calls. What concerns me is the frequent and episodic lack of discipline. It's never a consistent issue. One week it's the special teams coverage. Another week its an inability to effectively run a no huddle. Another week its a horde of penalties. Another week it's terrible run blocking. Another week it's terrible pass blocking. Another week it's blown pass coverages.

What's significant about all of that is the fact that, by and large, those are all mental errors. They indicate a lack of preparation and focus. It has nothing to do with talent, or ability. It's just an issue of heart and good/bad habits.

Like most of us out there, I've only truly experienced football as high as the high school varsity level. That's limited experience, but its enough to know the importance of discipline, preparation and good habits when it comes to being successful on the field. I'm fully aware that as you go up through college and into the pros, the extreme talent level of the players might make it a little less important- but I'd like to think that preparation and mental toughness is still the ultimate key to winning. Lombardi has a myriad of quotes and sayings attributed to him about the value of hard work and preparation.

McCarthy calling another boggling string of plays late in the 4th quarter of another tight loss, will never bother me as much as seeing yet another display of the lack of discipline on this team. You can call the wrong play, execute it and still succeed. But you can't run out there unprepared, unaware of how to run a no huddle offense and succeed. It's just not possible. This happens far too frequently to imagine that its a coincidence. Is it possible that McCarthy simply doesn't hold this team to a high enough level of discipline? For that reason, and no other, I couldn't argue against firing McCarthy, should we miss the playoffs. We have too good of a team to be doing this each year.

Oh, and also:

Oh, you mean you didn't mind allowing an offensive lineman run 71 yards down the field in the 2nd quarter? :p

A few notes that I caught onto watching the game:

We'll get the simple one out of the way, Kuhn likes to jump when he runs.

Poor management of timeouts. I believed they called one timeout with 4-ish minutes to go in the fourth, and I instantly turned to my friend and said thats going to hurt them later.

On the last timeout, the coach should tell the QB, these are the plays we are going to run. Boom, Boom, Boom. Go get em, instead of trying to relay to them on the headset in the final 30 seconds.

The momentum of the game shifted with Connolly running the ball back 71 yards after the Packers score. Totally changed the dynamics going into halftime, instead of 17-7, it was 17-14.

It did change but they could have recovered nicely if they had held NE to a field goal...they got them to 3rd down and goal but the blitz didn't work...

Horrible time management. Someone else said it, and you can't help but think of Flynn's LSU ties there. Now 8-6 with all 6 losses coming by 3 or 4 points. Simply amazing. The last playoff spots seems to be down to us and Tampa Bay for the most part. They have Seattle and New Orleans.

Two things I can't fault McCarthy for were their pillowy softness on that play and on the pick 6. It was ashame because they were the consistently more physical team the rest of the game. I wasn't happy with his time management, his going to the well one too many times on the fullback belly play early in the 4th quarter and then not rolling Flynn out with a chance to run or pass, and then after they had run the ball well coming out chucking like they were down a couple of scores after NE kicked a FG to cut it to 3.

Re: Packers 2010 Regular Season - ARodg and Woody in Clay-mation

While it's obvious the Packers clearly would have won had play calling and time management been run by USCHO straw poll, two things nonetheless:

1. McCarthy's time management at the end was smart. Being in that position with one timeout is a no-win, but Flynn had made a couple of hasty decisions and thrown into traffic on the previous two drives. Lucky to not get picked. He gets sacked, time is running and they use the last timeout. Did anyone else read McCarthy's lips when Flynn walked over after the sack? I'm not going to do it for you, but it made sense. When neither option is the best, you have to pick the least worst and that's exactly what McCarthy did. If it was Rodgers, different story, but with Flynn it was the right move. Last thing you want there is a rattled, unnerved and inexperienced QB racing against the clock seven seconds after getting pancaked. No way.

2. From that point on that least of all evils option put everything onto Flynn. Not ideal, but what are you going to do? A first down and then some later he was slow getting them to the line and getting the play called and we all know the result. Had they not called the timeout after the sack the same thing would have happened there and the time would have been a wash. Odd no one has brought up that angle. Matt Flynn is not John Elway...to expect optimum efficiency is ridiculous. The guy showed composure, he showed he could lead, and the coaches put him in the best position to succeed, but ah yes...he ain't John Elway. So calm down.
