Oswego State Lakers.. 2021-2022...Let's get ready to...???

I always enjoy entertaining other views. Consequently, I wanted to confirm my thoughts so I went through all the teams in the NCAA tournament to review transfers from D1.

You have to realize that if a player goes D1 they played either in the USHL, BCHL or NAHL, which means they have talent. The average age per league USHL (18.72) BCHL (18.67) AND NAHL (19.7)

On the other point you brought up Boots. Interesting and somewhat proves my point.

In the 2011 – 2012 season, he was fourth in points on the team (28). After leaving Oswego he has played the following 10 years in the pros.

The players above him in points:

Whitelaw: 1 season in pros
Moodie: Never played in the pros
Rodrigues: 5 seasons in the pros
Boots: 10 Seasons and still playing

Wonder what these other coaches saw in Boots?

Teams in the tournament.

Adrian – 6 D1 Transfers (avg age 22.9) Looks like Krug has it figured out!

Goals - Assist = Points
Ruffin: 15 + 26 = 41 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] on team
Spondniak 15 + 19 = 34 4[SUP]th[/SUP] on team
Wendt 8 + 19 = 27 7th on team
Spagnuolo 8 + 9 = 17 12[SUP]th[/SUP] on team
Adeniyc (D) 1 + 8 = 9 18[SUP]th[/SUP] on team
Gray (G) 21 games

Utica: 3 transfers (avg age 23.03)
Scoville 5+12 = 17 13[SUP]th[/SUP] on team
Acasta 4+ 7 = 11[SUP]th[/SUP] on team
Parker 5 +5 = 10 15[SUP]th[/SUP] on team

Geneseo: 2 transfers (Avg age 22.72)
Cmunt 17 + 5 = 22 (1 point a game) 4[SUP]th[/SUP] on team
Wunder 1 + 16 = 17 10[SUP]th[/SUP] on team

Hobart: 1 Transfer (avg age 22.23)
Alexander 6 + 15 = 21 4th on team

Trinity: 1 transfer (avg age 22.1)
Pugliesse 15 games .922

None of the other teams has D1 transfers

Oswego: 6 D1 Transfers (avg age 22.5)
Nash – left after 5 games
Dickinson (D) 1 +10 = 11 7[SUP]th[/SUP] on team

Clegg 6 + 3 = 9 *only 17 games 11[SUP]th[/SUP] on team
Robillard (D) 4 + 2 = 6 15[SUP]th[/SUP] on team
Warmuth (D) 2+ 3 = 5 17[SUP]th[/SUP] on team
Green 9 games .889

So is it every Oswego Transfer and recruit who just excelled in juniors now can't produce or is it coaching to the how the game is played in the current enviroment?

SNC has two D-1 transfers: ave age: 22.5
Adam Stacko 10 + 17 = 27 4th on team in scoring.
Johnny Roberts Goalie 11 - 3 record..

I like this analysis. It has seemed Coach has been bringing in the D1 guys before the season started the last couple of years, whereas transfers historically usually arrived after winter break, between semesters. Could be wrong here, but that's what I remember. I know he had spots to fill, but this group never really worked out. Wrong guys? Hard to speculate sitting in the cheap seats, but your numbers don't lie either. Already looking forward to next season, and it will be interesting what he does with next year's roster. I am for keeping and developing underclassmen even it means a rough year or two.

That is a slippery slope to suggest the Oswego coaches do not know how to coach in this environment. Remember Oswego had 21 new players who did not play together until this year. The 15 new players last year never were on the ice. The Oswego coaches had their hands full at the beginning of the season sorting out what they had.Utica , Elmira, Hobart and Adrian all played hockey last year. Adrian played 25 games. Those statistics are important but we have seen athletes who we expected to excel and did not, and the athlete's who were a total surprise to all of us. Next season will be a better year in Oswego and hopefully we get back to beating ranked teams.

FWIW, in addition to G Pugliese, Trinity had 2 D1 F transfers (they also had 2 D1 D transfers who didn't really play):
Jax Murray 9 + 12 = 21 3rd on team in scoring
Devan Tongue 6 + 5 = 11 8th on team in scoring

Sounds about right, and yes we need to beat the ranked teams, and get the special teams working in the playoffs, that said ...Go Lakers !!!

It will be interesting to see how things settle out the next few years if Oswego and Geneseo maintain the kind of recruits and style of play they have been pursuing recently. They almost looked like they were playing a different game at times this season. The contrast has never been so stark to me.

Also the last few years have been a little different in recruiting due to covid, less in person trips by both coaches and players I would imagine,I am sure that had something to do with certain players going to certain places....looooong off season for the players and coaches and the fans, lookin forward to another season. Go Lakers!!!

I think Elmira has D-1 transfer goalie- Chris Janzen from Clarkson. This is an interesting thread. I think Plattsburgh had like 5 D-1 transfers and from what I saw made an impact on the program.

So who do you have winning the 2022 NCAA College Hockey Playoff, Laker faithful? SUNYAC Division mate Genny, or any of the other 3 NYS teams?

St. Norbert has 2 D1 transfers on it’s roster:

Goaltender Johnny Roberts (Northern Michigan)

and

2nd line forward Adam Stacho (AIC) 10+17 = 27 (4th on team)

Would love to see Genny but not sure how good they are the games I watched we really didnt give them to much to look at unfortunately.....The U looks strong, again didnt see much of them???..The BIG ice sheet in Placid will make a difference for those better skating teams so don't forget that....Adrina looks strong and yes a full schedule last yr has helped them for sure...

Lake Placid is now an NHL sized rink.

There was a complete renovation of the building, and they can now move the boards for different sizes. NHL size will be used.

Geneseo's Doran was also a transfer: Defense 2 + 17 =19 pts.

I think large numbers of transfers (especially last minute transfers) can disrupt team culture if you are not careful. It also likely means you left out or passed over guys from juniors you spent months/years recruiting. That might catch up with you at some point, too.

I think the majority of kids who transfer down from D1 to D3 were heavily recruited by D3 programs all along but ended up getting D1 opportunities with no guarantees of playing time. After contributing significantly in Juniors and then being a healthy scratch at the D1 level playing behind NHL draft picks they re-connect with D3 coaching staffs that were interested in them a year or two prior.

Yes, I'm sure that's the case in some instances. The majority...I'm not sure. Geneseo's two commits from last year who left at the last minute for Alabama-Huntsville ended up at Plattsburgh and Stevenson.

To be perfectly honest, I'm still trying to figure out how Oswego only scored 4 goals to Geneseo's 16 in the three games this season. Yes, teams on paper are just teams on paper, but that still seems bizarre to me. That group of Laker players should have performed better against Geneseo. Clearly, Oswego has excellent coaching. Was there a team chemistry issue for Oswego? Was the team as carefully assembled as it should or could have been? Those are the kinds of questions I wonder about as an outsider. I'm not yet willing to accept the "it was just one of those things" explanation.

And we only scored 5 in the previous year's 3 games (2019-20) Recent history has been that way, that is "owned", Genny has become our new Platty, etc. Coach Schultz, huge respect, has solved Oswego. From the cheap seats, with binoculars, of course.

We’re probably both correct to a certain point. But, I think there is a difference between committing to a D3 program before leaving at the last minute for a bottom tier D1 school and having relationships with D3 coaching staffs that have been in the recruiting mix with you from the beginning.

The kids you mentioned likely would’ve been embarrassed to show their faces at Geneseo or possibly weren’t welcome if it was truly last minute.

yes experience tells me thats true, also after talking with some parents at Oz many of the top players were alsoD1 recruits, but when they walked into the Campus Center at Oz it changed many a mind...
