Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Beckwith lost his starting position because KGT has performed better, not because Paul was sick. Players miss games all the time because of injury, sickness, suspension, etc, If those who take their place do not perform better, then things return to as they were when the player gets back. Hopefully Beckwith stays positive because Oswego may need him at some point this season. If not, he has two more years. I for one am glad to know we have two goalies that are more than capable of winning games, some teams don't have any.

Also because KGT led the Lakers to their first win over Plattsburgh since 2006

We may be guilty of beating a dead horse a little bit on that, but is it really fair to tell Beckwith he lost his job because he got sick?

Clearly Gunn-Taylor has been better and Gosek's been riding the hot goalie (successfully), but I think there is definitely some controversy involved.

Here's the thing though. Up until last year, the Lakers didn't have a "goalie controversy" until Ryan Scott's freshman year. One could argue it goes back even further to the season they finished Runner-Up to Norwich in 02-03 and Tyson Gadja asserted himself as a tremendous talent.

Now we are talking about the two best goaltenders the school has ever had, so naturally after they both moved on, a controversy arose last year with Hyk, the unproven veteran, and Beckwith, the fresh face with a great Jr. career, were the only two on the roster. Potter and KGT were brought in because Beckwith was hurt and Hyk wasn't getting the job done.

Potter started every game in the second half other than the Potsdam game when he as recovering from "muscle cramps" (I threw the quotes in there for you Remy). What I'm getting at is that Potter came in, and the Lakers started winning - 9 in a row I believe at one point. Gosek never felt the need to break that up, despite Potter maybe not even being the best goaltender on the team and the issue with his cramps. That's why, unless KGT goes down with an injury or gets sick and Beckwith comes in and does the same exact thing, there will be no goalie controversy, it's KGT's job to lose.

... Another thing, with this on WNYO can we please stop the goalie controversy talk. There is no such thing. Gunn-Taylor is undefeated and in my eyes is a better goaltender than Beckwith, especially at this moment. I cringe every time I have heard lately on the pre-games, "I wonder who coach will go with in net?"

I heard it all last year from a few players that Gunn-Taylor was the better goaltender (Andrew I believe you heard the same) and never got a look. He was a proven good goaltender (7-7-4, 2.58 GAA, .90 SV%) on a poor Buffalo State team (10-12 that year) and now with an actual good defense and offense surrounding him he is now finally getting noticed...

Yes. I had some players tell me that KGT looked VERY impressive in practice and they thought he should get a look. Obviously he has proven that notion right.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Obviously the younger Laker fans have not had the chance to see the likes of Pete Sears or Paul Mueller, thus the assertion that these recent netminders are the best Oswego has ever had. Believe it it not, hockey did exist at Oswego long before this decade.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Fair enough, I was going by stats and National Championship appearances/wins. Those two hold basically every goalie record there is for the school. Not to mention they took them to two of their three title games and Scott carried the team on his back down the stretch for the Title.

I know Sears was great and I think he's a good guy too. But since I never saw him play, I went by the criteria I said above. In hindsight, I guess I could have said, "two of the best goaltenders the school has ever seen."

Can't really agree with that because we haven't seen Beckwith in net since he got over the flu so how can you say KGT is performing better then Beckwith. KGT is in net because Gosek goes with the hot players. Personally I don't like this type of coaching because if you have two good goalies and you decide to play the hot goalie, the other goalie tends to lose a little bit of an edge because has not played at game speed.

I have seen many goalies for the Lakers but the only stat that counts for goalies is wins and Paul Meuller tops that list. Paulie was a big game goalie, but for all the goalies they all played in different eras. The teams of the 80's where much more focused on Scoring. Just look at the years when Oswego's all time leaders played. You may never see a Laker team again score 200+ goals in a season and average 6-7 goals a game. That was true for all the teams in that time. If you had a goalie with a gaa of 3 you had a great goalie never mind < 2.

Maybe so, Beckwith has played well and has done nothing to make us think he can't do exactly what KGT is doing. Perhaps a more accurate assessment would be Gosek is going to play the goalie he feels gives his team the better chance to win (not the one who is performing better). At the moment, its Kyle. I agree it would be nice to see both get some time in nets, but with the season being so short there is very little room for error, and one off night could cost you home ice in the SUNYAC's, or worse yet, a Pool C bid should you happen to lose your conference tourney (which as we all know too well has been the norm).

Sounds like a bit of a contradiction. If you have a goalie that is winning games then he is performing better and the coach would be smart to continue playing him. Regarding the one off night, so you're saying Beckwith can't be trusted in net because he may "have an off night?' Seems to me he had a great night in Elmira and the rest of the team had an off night. So you using that logic, why don't we sit the players from the Elmira game and play the ones who weren't on the ice. All the goaltender debate aside, the Lakers are winning now when it was suppose to be a rebuilding season and let's hope they continue to win out and then there will be no doubt about whether or not they get invited to the NCAA's.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

I was just looking over the stats page and saw that defenseman Stephen Mallaro is tied for second on the team with Fox for GWG's with 2. Just wanted to give him some props for that and for his 8 points so far this year after only 2 (both assists) in his first two seasons. Great to see him elevate his play, especially after the loss he suffered last spring. His success is well-deserved after he put in his dues and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

When I refer to an "off night", I am not necessarily talking about the goalie. When the team has an "off night" the goalie needs to be able to step up and steal the game. KGT has demonstrated that he can do that and Gosek obviously has a great deal of confidence in him right now. You are right, Beckwith outplayed his team against Elmira, he did not however outplay his counterpart between the pipes. Maybe what coach was looking for was a goalie that is not only consistent, but one who could carry his team if need be.

Its not a slam on Beckwith to say KGT has played better, or is better. They are both very good goaltenders. Its a good problem to have. You never know, goalie is a fickle position. Beckwith could be the man in the nets before all is said and done and I may end up saying the same thing about him in regards to being better. I hope whoever it is, they continue to play as well as they both have up until this point in the season. If our goaltending continues to be this good we could have a very, very good year.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Enough goalie talk. We have two talented backstops, woe is we.

Let us switch gears and highlight what may have been a first for D3 hockey - Neil Musselwhite's shorthanded natural hat trick on Friday against Brockport.

Now, I know some only consider a hat trick to be natural if all the goals are scored in the same period. But Wikipedia disagrees, and we all know Wikipedia is never wrong. So, that's settled.

According to my research, Musselwhite's SH hat trick is only the 8th in the history of the NCAA and only the third natural SH hat trick in NCAA history. The first was Harvard's C.J. Young in 1988 (v. Dartmouth) and the second was Minnesota State's Zach Harrison last season (v. North Dakota - video below):

In another odd note, I mentioned earlier that a SH hat trick has only been accomplished eight times in NCAA history. Two of those instances have now occurred just two weeks apart this season. Mercyhurt's Mike Gurtler scored three shorties against Holy Cross on Nov. 20.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Here's hoping some Laker fan can help me....

I'm sure this has been brought up in the past, but does the ticket office at Oswego sell tickets well before the games? I want to go to the Platty game on Jan. 30th, and I'm just wondering if I can get my tickets ahead of time. Also, based on experience, how close to the game would you say I would be safe getting them?

Thanks!

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

I believe tickets go on sale about a week prior to the game, though they usually sell out within a day or two, at least for students. As for getting tickets outside the student section I'm not sure how quick they'd go but I'd plan on getting them no later than Tuesday.

Re: Oswego State 2009-10 Regular Season Thread

Question for those much more familiar with the area than I...

If I am planning to go to the 1/8 Adrian game, and then catch the game in Elmira at 4pm the next day, can any of you give suggestions for dcent yet affordable lodging? It's honestly something I've never had to deal with on my own before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In all honesty, I'd really watch the weather. If you're coming into town for just that game then it might be in your best interest to leave right after in case the lake effect kicks in overnight. Elmira is only 1:45-2 hours away and if you can take getting in there at around 11:30 or midnight it might be easier to drive through. Or drive to Geneva (about an hour away from both) and stay there for the night.

But, if you do really want to stay in Oswego, I'd go with the Best Western on the East Side of town. About 2.5 miles from school, you're pretty much on the main drag and you can just walk right across the street for Press Box breakfast in the morning! :D
