Open Wheel Racing 2021, anyone there to watch?

I'm convinced (with pure speculation) that after they signed Colapinto and then got that huge South American sponsor deal, that sponsor contract specifically was worded that Colapinto has to be in the car by such and such race. This is why everybody has been reporting for months that Doohan is out when the European leg starts. I am so convinced by my theory (LOL), that even if Doohan had won ever single race this year up to that crossover point, he was still out, because of that contract. Doohan never had a chance.
So, some interesting events the past couple of weeks makes me think I was right with the above speculation. ;)

After Bahrain (or maybe it was just before, I can't remember) Alpine openly said that Doohan is safe until at least the summer. They said his performance, despite some of his mistakes, has been encouraging, and he deserves to keep his ride without the pressure of a short review (i.e., the rumored post-Miami deadline). That was nice (and it is known that Ollie Oakes likes Doohan and certainly has some power in that team despite Briatore's role), but I questioned just how good Doohan's performance has been when put up against the prospect of being replaced by Colapinto.

But then it came out this past week, granted through rumors, that the Argentinean sponsor, the backer of Colapinto, missed a payment deadline. Ummm...

Like the age old adage goes -- follow the money.

If I had a nickel for every time Lando Norris got a beneficial safety car in Miami, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t much but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.

I'd be okay with sprints if they started with a wet track every time. That was an exciting 18 laps. How did Red Bull go from dominating every aspect of the weekend to everything falling apart? They can't even do pit stops correctly anymore.

So is Ferrari wearing blue in Miami as a nod to HP being their sponsor, or because they don't want to wear red hats in the USA? 😂

Max just takes pole position for tomorrow’s race over Norris. Kimi in third.
Max, McLaren, and Mercedes all have pace this weekend. Hopefully it means a good race today and not whoever is in first after turn 1 pulls away in clean air.

Rain early in the day but looks like it will clear up by lights out, still 50% chance from 4-6, though.

Was he pissed they asked him to let Charles by?
He was already mad by then.

After the initial pit stops he was catching up on Leclerc with his mediums versus Leclerc's hards. He wanted to pass him because he had better pace at that point to catch Antonelli, but was burning up his mediums fighting with Charles. By the time they let him pass it had been three laps and Lewis' pace was already slowing. Then when they asked him to let Charles by they told Leclerc before Hamilton so then Charles thought Hamilton was defying orders for a lap.

Then after they made the pass they kept bugging him about Sainz. He said "Do you want me to let him by too?"

Now I understand why Crofty made such a big deal about them telling Charles before Lewis. At the time I didn't understand why it mattered.

The comms are hub and spokes, right? The drivers can't speak directly to each other?

Well you called it, Colapinto in for Doohan.

Correct. I can only imagine the drama that would happen if drivers could speak to eachother.

So now the rumor is that Briartore used the rumor of allowing Doohan more time to extract more money from Colapinto's sponsor. And once the sponsor ponied up, the switch was made.

Another rumor said Doohan was only signed to a 5-6 race contract. Which kind of goes back to what I always believed.

Not sure if it's legit or not, but I saw Colapinto also only signed a contract for 5-6 races. If it's true then is Alpine just running out the clock for the new regs?

It’s how briatore will get paid with the budget limits. I really don’t get why alpine turned to him- he’s not some kind of f1 genius. And the drama that has been going on since he came back is epic, and pathetic.
