Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Milwaukee....I would have gone, but the tickets cost too much, and it was on Father's Day, so I didn't want to be there with my boys and the wife and daughter staying home (who didn't want to go). By the time I found out about the 2 for 1 tickets, the plans for the day were set.

I think there's room for both Milwaukee and Elkhart Lake, just do like the CART days and race Milwaukee in early June and Elkhart Lake in late August. And promote the crap out of them. From reading SPEED's article, all of us open wheel posters could have done a better job promoting than these yahoos did.

It was a pretty good race overall, though the cautions were WAY too long. Helio can't get a brake this yr. Either he's screwing up or bad luck besets him.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I thought about this some more.

on thursday I was in chicago and drove up to milwaukee friday. off of I-94 there were 0 billboards advertising the race. 0. but there were several taxicar billboards.

in chicago there was NO PRESS. NONE.

in years past some 5,000-7,000 people would have come up from Chicago.

on the back stretch of the track, 12 of 24 billboards were tarped over. no sponsorship. not even local hero's Briggs and Stratton who ALWAYS used to be an associate sponsor. Fred Stratton was there in turn 1, I'm not sure how involved he is anymore w/Briggs but this is just sad.

co-workers of mine had no idea the race was this weekend, a few of whom said they'd have gone.

to exacerbate the situation the old promoters did not share w/ AB the email contact list for renewals. therefore we did not get a ticket renewal form in the mail. we had to call 5-7 times to find out *** about this race and to get on the new list.

what those old promoters did is immoral and bankrupt. they may be bitter they owe everyone money but for milwaukee this is quality of life as well as great racing. they lose Indycar and the town just gets smaller and less fun to live in.

Bernard talked w/Road America last week and Joliet talks are on-going.

if they leave milwaukee (where Jim Clark won, Michael Andretti, A.J., Greg Moore, Rodger Ward and so many others) they'll be gone for good and the most historic race in Indycar history will be but a memory.

just absolutely depressing

I think you got the pole position in Miller's mailbag this week, did you not?

zowee! yes, that was me. ****. Someone does read the email once in a while;)

****. I am feeling left out. Tim's been twice and now you. I am going to have to try to make that three of us! ;)

Great job Dan, er solovsfett. I may have got printed twice, but I never got the pole position. I'm jealous. :D

On a somewhat related note, now that we know your real name, what is the story behind your user name? Obviously Matt and I aren't very creative, unless Matt really isn't Matt, and alphablue must like alpha's and blue.

We're camping this weekend, so we'll be missing all the open wheel action :(, but relaxing and maybe catching some walleyes on a new lake will make up for it. :)

Alpha? this is a car thread, right? It's Alfa. Originally A.L.F.A- an Acronym. Which was changed to a word when Nicola Romeo bought ALFA.

Blue would be Michigan.

I'm usually Alfadriver on boards, but I figure sports boards miss the car thing, so I cut it a little.

Hans Solo vs. Boba Fett, right?

It's cool that two of the normal 4 posters have gotten on Robin Miller. But it does kind of seem that few post stuff, if the odds are that good.

Yeah, you're correct. My real name is Matt and my last name begins with S. I guess I was not feeling very creative that day way back in 2000. :)

it may be that my letter was the first one sent? I know I sent it sunday evening.

my username is a star wars reference. + there used to be a comic book called bring me the head of boba fett or something like that. so I took what I thought are the two coolest characters (han solo and boba fett) and mashed em together to get solovsfett the "vs" cause well, that would be an awesome standoff in a comic book!

I'll catch Iowa tomorrow after work, I can't wait!

and what's this news from F1 about Red Bull and some new regulations?

FIA is clamping down on blown diffusers the one of the supposed advantages (along with the flexible front wing) that Red Bull has.

thanks...

I missed the F1 race this weekend...Vettel wins again. Alonso 2nd

Caught the Iowa Indycar race. Very good race with lots of passing for 1st. Franchitti had the field covered for the first 1/2 of the race then his car must have gone away a bit as Marco clawed his way up and passed him a couple of times then after that Dario dropped back to 5th I think. TK and Marco's battle was great. I would have been happy w/either one winning.

It's good for Indycar to have Andretti win and also Rahal and Hildebrand fair well (and hopefully win), though I'm still not sure how talented Marco truly is.

good crowd, apparently a sell-out?

Not sure if they can smooth out turn 2 but they should look at doing that. at least 3 cars backed into the wall after hitting that bump at the wrong angle

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

I just caught the last 30 laps or so of the Iowa race. Have I mentioned how much I hate Saturday night races. But at least they were entertaining laps. While overall I am not a fan of ovals I do like the Iowa race. I like how it forces the drivers to actually drive and not just have big balls and run flat out all the time.

As for the European GP...I don't like Valencia. It's a bad street course and if it wasn't for the DRS there wouldn't have been any passing. It looks like Ferrari has made some strides and at least caught up with McLaren if not bettering them. They still aren't as good as RB but they are getting there. It will be interesting to see what happens after the new rules all go into effect. Nice strategy and drive by the STR team to get Alguersuari into 8th!

And something needs to change with regards to tires and qualifying. Sutil doesn't even bother to go out because they wanted to save his tires. And what, Heidfeld does one - two laps and calls it quits. Nobody pays not to see the cars run. F1 needs to let them have tires specifically for qualifying!

V6 Turbo coming to F1 in 2014

FIA confirms 1.6 turbo engines for 2014
29 Jun 2011

The FIA, motorsport’s governing body, has confirmed that Formula One racing will move to new engine regulations in 2014, with the current 2.4 litre V8s being replaced by more efficient 1.6 litre, turbocharged V6s.

The FIA had originally planned a switch to four-cylinder engines in 2013, but has approved the revised formula in light of concerns formalised last week by various interested parties.

“Following a fax vote by its members, the World Motor Sport Council has ratified the engine regulations recently drawn up in consultation with the main stakeholders in Formula One,” read an FIA statement.

“The new power plant will be a V6 1.6 turbo unit with energy recovery systems. This new formula will come into effect as from the start of the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship season.”

The new energy recovery systems (ERS) will replace the current kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS) and are expected to be more powerful. Combined with the legalisation of turbocharging, they will ensure overall power outputs remain similar to current levels, despite an anticipated drop in the permitted rev limit.

Formula One’s last turbo era ended in 1988, a season dominated by the 1.5 litre V6 Honda-powered McLaren’s of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. The sport returned to naturally aspirated engines in 1989, with a new 3.5 litre formula.

I LOVE the sound of this!

also - I'm hearing 8-12-11 for the SENNA U.S. movie release. I'm guessing wherever it plays it will be out for a very limited run

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

The problem here is that most people (and I use to include myself in that group until recently) still think of Andretti as a good team. But they have shown over the past couple of seasons that they are no longer a good team. They are now marginal too.

Oh, and yeah, that Marco to F1 talk from a while back looks dumber and dumber now.

I guess maybe I was wrong about this. :o

Seriously I still think Andretti is a mediocre team and Marco, at least right now, it a fair driver. Although if he can show the poise he had last weekend then he could develop into a good driver.

You weren't. Even a blind squirrel gets a nut once and a while. Plus with all the roadcoarses coming up Marco and Danica will go back to sucking, and we'll probably see Hunter Reay doing better.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

no racing this weekend...boring...

I hope NBC lands the Indycar tv contract

F1 in Austin...I really hope it works but just don't understand why Austin? I would love to see them back at Watkins Glen, or selfishly, upgrade Elkhart and see what they can do there!

found fan footage of imola 94 while rooting around looking for the Senna movie, very interesting stuff
