Olympic Spoiler Thread - You've Been Warned.

Re: Olympic Spoiler Thread - You've Been Warned.

I just saw an update that the US women's team will get an opportunity to qualify by themselves later today. The ruling was that the Brazilian team caused the problem in the exchange.

The US needs to post a time of 42.70 or better. If they do, that's not the end of it--the Canadian and Chinese teams will then need to have a run off to determine the final qualifier as they had both tied at 42.70. Now if the US posts exactly 42.70...:p

Too bad, even if warranted, and especially because it was the Brazilians. US, rightly or wrongly, will be accused of strongarming. I have no doubt they can beat any standard; they're a lot faster than the Canadians and Chinese.

My head hurts!!

Watching badminton. Woof!

Not that little kids backyard game where you hit the shuttlecock underhand, huh? But that goofy dink serve everyone seems to use looks silly.

Re: Olympic Spoiler Thread - You've Been Warned.

If I recall correctly, in many sports, you have to have a minimum qualifying time. In some countries, you might have a dozen people or more with a time that is good enough to qualify, yet only three people can go from that country. The difference in some cases is a tenth of a second between being top three and top five.

Which doesn't answer my question. :)

France is playing US tough. is griner supposed to be good or is it she is just tall? She sucks in this game

I know they ended up making with a second to spare, but CBC had an interview with one of the even directors. He mentioned that this wasn't that unusual- happened like 3 times in the last 5 years, and it makes total sense to let the US team attempt to qualify. China posted a counter protest, but it was denied. Not sure if I would call it strong arming, but I can see it being seen that way.

Woof. First time I think I have seen Bolt actually run hard. He was flying. THe Canadian looked pretty good too.

She doesn't respond well to physical play. She gets thrown off her game if you keep hitting her in the body. At least three or four missed layups. She relies too much on her height and doesn't utilize basic fundamentals as well as she should.

I didn't think the US would miss Sue Bird as much as they did. The offense was really sloppy and sputtered a lot. They got by with their defense in the second half. Seimone Augustus really bailed them out in a way by hitting a series of clutch jump shots when needed the most.

I'm impressed by Maya Moore's play off the ball. Obviously she is a great offensive threat, but the way she chases down loose balls, crashes the boards, gets key steals (leading the team in steals), switches on defense....she is doing all the dirty work that needs to be done for the team to succeed. In college she seemed like a bit of a prima donna, and the book was that if you muscled her, she'd get rattled. No longer, apparently.

Kind of neat that the USA coaching staff has the Lynx head coach on staff (three championships in five years) as well as the best college coach ever. It is probably harder than one would expect to coach a team full of superstars at all 12 roster spots, to get every one of them all to buy in 100% to being role players. Even on the bench they are all actively involved in cheering and supporting their teammates.

Feel thoroughly uninspired by the whole bskbl thing. I dont' watch it during the yr and can't see wasting time watching that when you can watch coverage of something you mightn't see any other time. I miss wide world of sports on Saturday nights when you could watch a bunch of different things.

Did I miss some sort of statement about why Track and Field athletes get their medals the next day (for the most part)?

Re: Olympic Spoiler Thread - You've Been Warned.

With about 10 minutes left in the womens soccer bronze medal match

Canada 2
Brazil 1

EDIT: And it's a final. Congrats to Canada.

I thought Moore and Taurasi(sp?) were the best American players, the offense was out of sync without a point guard. The little blonde from France, while nice to look at, was shooting daggers. Between the legs, step back, 3 pointer was killer. She can shoot. Biggest disappointment was the girl who graduated from UConn last year, Stewert, I've seen a few games and she looks out of sorts.
