First time I've ever seen the baton passed too early. US women's 4 x 100 were awesome.

Re: Olympic Spoiler Thread - You've Been Warned.

Whoever ran the 3rd leg for the US women seemed to have another gear. It was over once Bowie got it

Given the lane they had, but the first (Bartoletta) and 3rd (Gardner) leg did a great job! They pumped it hard on what is thought as a very tight corner. Interesting note is that Bartoletta made it as far as the Semis in the 100m, but won the long jump.

Which made me think- other than Jessie Owens and Carl Lewis- nobody has won the 100m, 200m, 4x100m, and Long jump in the same Olympics. Given his shape, it would have been great to see Bolt try long jumping- he's got the long legs for jumping.

I'd like to see Bolt try the 400m.

Sounds like a good retirement project. :) After all, he's stronger in the second half of the 100 and 200. I've also wondered what he'd be like in the 400 hurdles. He's got long legs, so the hurdles should be easy, but his long stride might make it difficult to get his steps right for the distance between hurdles.

I've thought more about this, especially in light of the fact that Japan beat them even before the DQ. Ato Bolden mentioned that the Japanese were very good on the baton passes, and practiced them many times and for many weeks/months before the Olympics.

The baton pass that resulted in the DQ was a crappy pass even if it hadn't been outside the zone. To do a baton pass too early, the giving runner has to be decelerating before he gets to the passing zone and the receiving runner has to be basically standing still. Ideally, the giving runner should be decelerating in the zone, not before, and the receiving runner should be moving when he receives the baton.

Every time we have one of these debacles, I wonder if we should have a relay team that (a) stays fixed throughout the competition and (b) practices baton passes every day, many times. It seems to me that we have enough depth that the improvement in baton passes would more than make up for the difference in all out speed of the runners.

Of course there is Jackie Joyner-Kersie who did the heptathlon and long jump (I believe she won both in the same year once), which is pretty impressive.

One thing about the long jump is it requires a great "burst" of a strain on your takeoff muscles. I wonder if sprinters don't like to put that kind of strain on their legs.

As for Bolt and the 400m, one does have to wonder how he would do.

After all, Allyson Felix, mainly a 400m runner, competed in the 4x100 relay.

US Women win gold in basketball. Once again, not a close game.

Geno is doing the same thing for the women internationally as he's done the past few years at UConn. Despite the men's game getting closer and closer, the women are more dominant than ever. Parity, even a semblance of it, just doesn't exist.

I don'the care for Auriemma, but he'said made some very good adjustments. Several games (including today's) were close early, but the team pulls away. Of course it helps to have the talent to execute whatever adjustment you want.

Very nice free kick by Neymar. Left upper 90 from about 30 yards. Almost tied by German header off the crossbar.

Re: Olympic Spoiler Thread - You've Been Warned.

Germany seems to be controlling play, but they're trailing at the half... Seems to be Brazil's to lose...
